International media’s reaction to Malaysia’s GE 14

Few Malaysians would have thought they would live to see this day – the defeat of the formidable Umno-led Barisan Nasional (BN)/Alliance which had held unbroken power for 61 years since Malaysia’s independence from the British in 1957.

The thrashing defeat of BN not only shocked the nation, it also drew mixed responses from the rest of the world.

Here are some of the reactions reported by various international media:

The Sydney Morning Herald:

“Australians will forever recall Mahathir for his “recalcitrant” stoush with Paul Keating in the early 1990s.
Now we, like people around the world, will also know him as the man who finally achieved an unlikely victory by an opposition party in a democratic election in a country that is a near neighbour, ally, and close trading partner.”

The Jakarta Post:

“In a huge political upset, Mahathir’s opposition alliance ended the hold on power of the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition, which has governed Malaysia uninterrupted since its birth as an independent country in 1957. It capped a dramatic political comeback for Mahathir, who previously ruled the country with an iron fist for 22 years and came out of retirement to take on Prime Minister Najib Razak after the leader became embroiled in a massive corruption scandal.”

Bangkok Post:

“It was a stunning triumph that almost no one had predicted and ended the long hold on power of the Barisan Nasional (BN, National Front) coalition, which has ruled Malaysia since its birth as an independent country. The victory capped a dramatic political comeback for Mahathir, who previously ruled the country with an iron fist for 22 years, and came out of retirement to taken on Prime Minister Najib Razak after the leader became embroiled in a massive corruption scandal.”

BBC:

“This morning Malaysia has woken to an entirely new situation, the first transfer of power in its history, albeit to a very familiar leader. But there are huge unknowns. How willingly will Barisan Nasional, the coalition which has, in various forms, run the country since independence and embedded itself into all areas of governance, relinquish power?”

CNN:

“Malaysians will likely be in for days, if not weeks and months, of uncertainty, as a ruling coalition is hashed out and it is decided how and when Mahathir will step aside for Anwar or another opposition figure.”

Singapore politicians’s reaction

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong:

“Many Singaporeans would have followed the news about the Malaysian election yesterday. It is clear that the outcome represents a major change in Malaysian politics. We are now awaiting the formation of a new government.

We are following the situation closely. As Malaysia’s closest neighbour, we have a vested interest in Malaysia’s stability and prosperity. While Malaysian politics are for Malaysians to decide, Singapore wishes Malaysia all the best in its political development. Singapore has enjoyed good relations and close cooperation with Malaysia for many years, with successive Malaysian leaders. We look forward to developing an equally constructive relationship with the next Malaysian government, and to work with it to take our bilateral ties forward and benefit both our peoples.”

DPM Tharman Shanmugaratnam:

“A clear vote for change in Malaysia. And it was across the board – Malays, Chinese, Indians and even the Dayaks in Sarawak. Wish Malaysia well, and hope we continue to work together for mutual good of our people.”

Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan-Jin:

“Stunning results in the Malaysian GE!
Our Malaysian friends have made their choice and spoken out decisively. Congratulations!
We look forward to working with the new Government and leaders, and to continue to strengthen the friendship and cooperation between our two countries.

We wish Malaysia well.”

Dr Mahathir’s swearing-in as PM ceremony to take place at 9.30pm

Meanwhile, Pakatan Harapan’s chairperson, Dr Mahathir Mohamad will be sworn-in tonight (10th May) at 9.30pm as Malaysia’s 7th prime minister.

  • Not A Surprise:

To many concerned Malaysians, the change is quite eminent when Dr M and oppositions joined forces. So it is not really a surprise other than a different outcome because of gerrymandering by Najib.

To SG’s PM LHL, stop your hypocrisy, everyone knows who will be the next ruling party and the next PM of Malaysia, you still “awaiting for the formation of a new government”. If you are not sure don’t congratulate anyone lah!!!

Also to DPM and Speaker of Parliament, if you were unwilling to congratulate the new Ruling Party and the new PM of Malaysia, please don’t do it, don’t do it halfheartedly!!

Dr. Mahathir promises to “Restore the Rule of Law”. Hope Singaporeans can do the same in GE2020.

  • Dreamer:

there are many ways of looking at the results of malaysia’s latest
general election, which has stunned not just malaysians but also
many outside the country. some have described it as a warning to
the PAP which has a GE coming up within the next couple of years.

it should certainly open windows for s’poreans, who, if they care
to, will get insights into what could happen if something similarly
astonishing occurred here. we get to see firsthand what’s left behind
when a long-time party in power has to give up that power; the kind
of difficulties the new incumbents encounter in taking over, esp in
this uncertain time of change in many areas. we get to prepare for
    such an eventuality.

intriguingly, this upset victory was helped along by a very old hand,
who worked with a former friend who later became a sort of non-friend
and is now a friend again.

if one lets one’s imagination run free, the whole situation has a sort
of eerie touch to it. it leaves one wondering if another charismatic
old hand is trying to keep his promise to return in case of problems,
and is attempting to do so by using a frenemy from across causeway to
lift the blinkers from the eyes of his daft followers, so they can see
a new route! and in the process, to encourage those believers in him to take as daring a step as the guys across the causeway.

  • Dr M vs LHL:

Dr M was always in loggerheads with LKY decades ago when they were both PMs, they were equally matched as many would agree! Wonder LHL or CCS would be able to match him ! Will the crooked bridge be built what abt the HSR project! He will abolish the GST and if this is viable , SGP should then not have to depend on raising GST to sustain the expenses of the country! Raising and implemetation of GST is just an easy way to raise funds, are there other ways?
By the way his pay is pittance compared to LHL’s $$$$millions and going by PM Lim Wee Kiat’s opinion, the former would not be able to speak on equal terms with our PM! Really ?

    Breaking News !

Botak house just got raided !!!

There are videos of bags and bags of jewels and $$$$$ just like the same of Imeda Marcos !

    Botak is so STUPID !

He should have long ago started a “Select Committee”….then “rammed thru in double quick time”….and get approval from his Majority Own Chronies Support !

That way he could now have “gotten away” , “leegally” Millions of $$$$ , since he could claimed it was his salary and not corrupt $$$$ .

He could also “leegally bought” his cronies by also paying them M$60k per month salary ( equivalent of ( S$18k x 3 )…and all his cronies would have happily “rubbed, each others back ) and remain “corruption free ).

Mahathir has started getting back at those who insulted him during GE14. Top posts to been replaced have been identified and passports impounded.

He also want to get back the 1 MDB monies confiscated by Singapore and others.

Wonder what will happen to those ‘Lembu’ condos, 1MDB condos and properties owned by Najib and family in SG?

  • Time For PAP To Go!:

PAP has overstayed its power-grabbing adventurism. As a result, it has become overly arrogant, over-confident, over-indulging, cocky, merciless, draconic, and disrespectfully talking-down upon the people, habitually making unpopular policies become its norm and boasting about it.

Its pro-foreigners policies and schemes are actually the extension of its strategic plan to stay in power by replacing true blue Singaporeans (who are increasingly seeing through the wayward unscrupulous behaviour of the self-enriching and self-glorifying PAP elites) with new citizens and permanent residents.

  • EXTERNAL FORCES:

Without USA, Mahathir could not have brought down BN.

The main ingredient for the win was the EXPOSE by the USA about the corruption.

    This is the key factor.

Without External Forces, BN could not have fallen.

Likewise, without EXTERNAL FORCES , PAP will not fall.

The Domestic market, as it were, has been totally domesticated sice 53 years ago.

It’s External Forces that change the domestic government.

Only EXTERNAL FORCES can bring down any country.

The domestic market has been fully domesticated.

So your best hope for Change lies with the External Forces.

There is absolutely no way locals can bring change.
Look at the ways the laws are being changed to make things so much more difficult.

Mahathir also said the fake news law is more likely targeted at the opposition.

He also says anwar is innocent. This shows he was feminised because of political assassination.

We can see how simple politics is all about.
It’s all about corruption and holding on to power for fear of being investigated once power is lost.

It’s that simple. Using the law as a means to an end.
So simple yet so many sunkens are oblivious and timid and balless.

    Absolutely hopeless.
Only external forces can bring Change.

That’s why evil will have to sark external forces harder.
