SIA went out of its way to make the experience horrifying for us

On the 8th of June, I was flying back via Singapore Airlines (SQ 516) to Calcutta with my parents (both senior citizens) and younger sister from Brisbane. We had a layover in Singapore and after six hours of being in transit, we were ready to board our flight that was scheduled to take off at 9.10pm Singapore time. We were put on a bus that would take us to our aircraft. With very few seats available and all taken, the majority of us were standing.

The driver started the bus, moved it by half an inch, and then got off the bus. He repeated this four times. Everytime we thought we were going to leave, he got off. It was about 30 minutes we had been trapped inside with no explanation, no reasons. My 73 year-old father and many other senior citizens and toddlers were extremely uncomfortable and physically exhausted just standing there in oblivion.

Some of us frantically knocked on the door and windows and the driver of the bus shrugged from the outside as if to say “I have no idea what’s going on, don’t yell at me” until one lady from the ground staff (who was earlier anxiously ushering everyone onto the bus as if we were school children or an uneducated lot) came to the bus to ask us to calm down.

Some of us, including me, lost our cool at her and yelled at her until she let us off the bus and wait at the terminal. 20 minutes later we were asked to board the aircraft. It was now 9.30pm. Upon boarding, we were told that the airconditioning in the aircraft was not working and it would be fixed within fifteen minutes. Every five minutes the captain kept giving us live updates on the PA system — “the engineer is on his way”, “the engineer is here and it will be fixed soon”, “please bear with us, the temperature will increase for ten minutes before it starts cooling”.

Everyone waited patiently until we realised this wasn’t going to get fixed anytime soon. Half an hour had passed with zero ventilation in an aircraft full of passengers. An airhostess at some point told me the aircraft hasn’t been in use for a long time and so the airconditioning was not working.

A pregnant lady had gotten so sick she was getting hot flashes and no amount of water splashing helped. Two other women were profusely throwing up in the back of the plane. Everyone was sweating. It was 31 degrees in Singapore and very humid. When we confronted the cabin crew, they had no answers, rudely shut us up, threatened to call the cops to arrest us, and said “we are in the same situation as you are, don’t ask us, we don’t know anything”.

If we won’t ask them then who are we supposed to ask? They were not letting us deboard the plane and they weren’t being able to immediately fix the air-conditioning problem and they weren’t able to give us any answers. Passengers were using the safety card to fan themselves.

Two doctors (a senior citizen couple who had to board the aircraft from another wing in wheelchairs) from my apartment building in Calcutta were on the same plane. When I went to them asking for help for people throwing up, I saw that the gentleman had gotten so sick he had to take off all his clothes and sit in a mere vest. Like us, they were traveling from Australia where it’s anywhere between 6 and 9 degrees right now.

The airline didn’t let anybody go. We were being treated like prisoners, being asked to sit in our seats and wear our seatbelts. They told us if we were going to offload ourselves then we wouldn’t be allowed back in and they would put us on another plane which was two days later and they wouldn’t compensate us for any of it.

The airline did NOTHING to make us comfortable. They refused us cold water and drinks until much later when we gathered around the pantry demanding for fizz drinks to feel better. My dad, who has a major dehydration problem, felt suffocated and claustrophobic.

The pilot kept announcing that they we are about to fly “soon” but nothing happened. Three times the ground police came to our aircraft to understand the problem and did nothing about it despite people crying for help. It seemed like they were just called in to distract us. Later, when the pilot announced they were ready to go, the airconditioning had still not started. Everyone was nervous.

When I raised the concern with a ground security police officer, he told me that I shouldn’t be on this plane and that I should immediately get off. People were concerned that what was a “minor problem” took THREE HOURS to fix and very few had confidence we would land safely. In a situation like this, we expected the cabin crew to help us understand the problem and reassure us that it was fixed and safe to fly.

As someone generally very afraid and anxious of flying, I raised the safety concern with a male cabin crew, and a lady cabin staff (also the head) overheard as he was explaining to me what had happened, and nastily asked him to ignore everything I was asking or saying. When I told her how can you ask your staff to ignore a passenger, her response was that she didn’t have time for this!

Our plane took off at around midnight-12.30am Singapore time. We were supposed to reach Calcutta at 10.30pm Calcutta time and we landed at 2am. We were on that plan for three hours with zero ventilation in super humid weather, with no way to get out, with a bunch of extremely rude cabin crew, and absolutely nobody helping to make the situation better.

This was a traumatic experience not only for me and my senior citizen parents but for everyone on that plane. I strongly believe that this outright racist and dehumanising behaviour was meted out to us because we are Indians and the superiority complex was beyond evident.

Singapore Airlines took no responsibility and the captain issued a basic verbal apology over the PA system. To some passengers they handed out universal adapters (!!??!!) as a token of I’m not sure what. We take premium airlines because we have faith in their services and that our journey will be nothing less than comfortable. Singapore Airlines went out of its way to make the experience horrifying for us.

They should not have let us board the plane in the first place if they knew there was a problem, which they evidently did when our bus was delayed and we were thrown back into the terminal. I wonder if they would have behaved the same way with passengers in an aircraft flying to New York or London. Well, you know the answer.

A passenger on the aircraft mentioned that if they delay boarding of passengers, the airline is charged a heavy penalty and that is why we were forced into the sauna of a plane! Is this true? To people reading this and those with knowledge about this, I want to know if and how I can take this up legally and whether I can claim a full reimbursement?

    Nothing new. Only those who praise SIA and Scoot have not experienced it themselves. My friend went to Hong Kong last week by Scoot. Onboarding plane had no aircon, then had to wait one hour on board plane. Reason weather in Hong Kong.

    On arrival he checked with his HK friends how was the weather 3 to 4 hours ago. You know what, small rain no big deal. He knew one thing for sure, they use aircon spoilt as an excuse whenever there is a long wait on board. TO SAVE COST (FUEL IS EXPENSIVE DUE TO PAP G TAXES, OVER TAXES).

    All you dafts got screwed and bluffed by PAP-regime’s GLCs. You keep voting them, they screw you harder.

    From the way she writes how on earth she was a former reporter/journalist? Like she cheated and got herself a job as a journalist.     Someone here in TRE could even write a column about the many failures, losses and problem of SG Temasek’s investment in India.

    SIA is a major employer of many many thousands of Singaporeans. These Sporeans have families to feed and support. When you talk about SIA do not just think of airplanes, flight crews and pilots. There are many thousands of Sporeans who work under the SIA banner. Ground support, admin support, catering, airport control towers staff, cleaners, etc.

    SIA crews and staff are they so silly to break their own rice-bowls and go all out to be rude to these Indian customer? The writer is exaggerating. If a plane load of India Indians become rowdy and unreasonable, the pilots and crews will have to be firm and stern to bring the situation under control. The writer is playing up the racism card. These people have a super inferiority complex? SIA investigators need to take special note of this.

    If SIA close down, thousands of Singaporeans will be out of a job. The writer seems like she wants SIA to close shop for good….SIA management better be smarter in the investigation. Be reminded of the chief chow ah qua in the way he dealt with the CECA trade deal signing and only got some kachang putehs in return.

    Indian nationals are very difficult people. They probably think Singaporeans are hillbillies or country bumpkins and think they can push their way around especially to the service and sales staff. I have come across how they treat sales staff in shopping malls and at Ikea. The fact is people around the world, not just Singapore see India indians as obnoxious people.

    It’s good the Indian Indians experience it; for Yrs SIA sucked up to the whites and I have been travelling on quantas Emirates etc whenever I can; once on a BALI fltto spore twenty Yrs back I noticed they were serving the whites and explaining all abt the wines even in economy so much so it delayed serving lunch to sporeans sitting in economy; I made a complaint to the supervisor and matter was put right;
    To the Indian Indians may I suggest you publicise it to yr countrymen not to fly SIA ; Indian Indians have the gift of the GAP are quarrelsome and garrulous accord to the late mr Lee ky so use yr skills go online write to SIA ceo and let the world know; what you found out we locals here know for decades;off late SIA service sucks service STD dropped food bland etc etc;
    By the way Indian Indians in all fairness are cunning lot and troublesome; once on a Lufthansa flt fr Frankfurt to spore via an Indian cityone Indian lady kept on asking the German Stewardess for this and that until she got told off

    Not only recently, l found out SIA’s very bad service & attitude towards Singaporean as early as in mid-90s. Social media compliant avenue wasn’t there then & you know the ShitTimes will never publish yours or any compliant against their master PAP & their GLCs. Many didnt know when they complained to ShitTimes they got blacklisted & marked. This is how PAP controls the mess with fear with spy like the ShitTimes. Over times, Sinkies became kiasi, kiasu & kiachenghu.

    On one flight returning from Brisbane to SG with tour group (100% Singaporean then) boarded SIA. After a week away we naturally asked for newspapers to read. Never came but Australians asked, immediately given. Never mind don’t read the ShitTimes no lose.

    After the plane took off, came refreshment service time. SQ girl came to me asked what drink l wanted. I asked for beer she said no more with her l have to wait. Ok, fine orange juice then. I was sitting on aisle seat. She moved on ahead and l happened to be observing her cause nothing to do no newspaper to read. What she did next really made me very angry, she took out two cans of Tiger Beers gave to two Australians who asked for beer & they were seated just two rows ahead of me.

    I complained to the Chief Steward, he apologised claiming she was new on the job. I told him no excuse. If she wasn’t ready SIA shouldn’t put her on the job. As long as she put on that uniform & serve on board l took it she was trained, dont give stupid excuse. He really got scolded by me.

    If she was not told to give special priority to angmoh she (all the more being new on the job as l was told) would not do such despicable locals are given 2nd class treatment. Someone must have given her instruction to pay more attention to angmoh’s request. SIA suck!

    From that day onwards l ban SIA till now. To those who hasn’t experience how bad they treated locals, you are simply just lucky. Their looking down on locals (esp. economy class) has been in their DNA since SIA was borned. Dont be a bodoh, paying premium price for 2nd class service.

    Btw, has anyone heard about one SQ girl was gang raped by this good looking Indian (SQ guest she served) & friends in one hotel she went out to meet him? She was raped non-stop for the whole day until she gone mad. No one was arrested & charged. Welcomed to India, SQ.

    Too over-careful with keeping within operating costs and not prepared to spend one cent more. Lower staff including possibly the Duty Manager, very afraid to make decisions which requires thinking out of the box. Staff work like unfeeling robots following the manual.
    There was this long ago airline story in Europe of a junior staff on his own initiative ordering drinks and snacks for delayed passengers only to be later reprimanded by his immediate superior. The Chairman heard about it and he instead wrote a letter commending the junior staff for sensibly taking care of their customers .
    Over here it could be the rigid set-up. That being the case the airline should have a permanent 24 hours open line for their staff to get to a senior-most authority who could make quick decisions if a situation or problem arises where extra dollars need to be expended caused by consequential delays etc..
    One look at this incident is the underlying guiding work rules to keeping any “loss” to the bare minimum and not much thought or understsnding given about the comfort of customers especially children and old folks or the sick.
    Now they met their match with some champion complainers who could also make the story a little juicier. This is good wake up call for the airline to relook and improve on their processes.

    I was a Gold Member of SQ for a number of years, I also used SQ cargo for a portion of my business. This was from 2003 until 2013. I no longer patronize SQ. The cabin crew are well above the norm and I haven’t had any complaints there but they are pricing themselves above to other carriers who service Singapore, Emirates and Qatar, both as good as if not better than SQ and at lower prices and a much, much better corporate attitude. A few years I held a gold status on both Emirates and SQ, flying Emirates if I paid full fare economy and there was space in Business, I got bumped up on a number of occasions, I would guess forty percent of my travel, with SQ in ten years, I got a bump up once! Their cargo service is not as good either, I no longer use SQ for travel or cargo if there is an alternative, don’t like the holier than thou attitude of the admin.

    Exaggeration aside from the Indian group, surely they could be given temporary shelter in the Transit Lounge until the air-cond is repaired.
    In hindsight, the only way to quell the upset mood is to give free flow of beer and brandy..and all the “king’s man will be subdued!

All they CAN do is call for help and wait for engineering crews to arrive and resolve the issue. They themselves are asking the SAME questions as you and the passengers. If they cannot answer it, is it THEIR fault? They are not all-knowing gods. And if their suggestions – and they will have made this – to return you to the lounge were denied, who made the call and why?

    There are two sides to this story. Let’s hear the other side also before we go forward, yes?

    That was many years ago on board an Indian cruise ship “ Chindabaram” sailing from India to Singapore

    Upon arrival at Singapore port, one elderly passenger approached the ship crews for some information.

    For reasons best known to the ship crews, they just brushed the elderly aside and ignored him. The elderly passenger was of course not pleased by this very rude gestures and passed off some remarks.

    You know what happened next?

    The elderly passenger was beaten to the ground by the ship crews. If not for the intervention by some Caucasian passengers nearby, we wonder if the elderly passenger could get up on his feet again.

    After so many years, this incident still linger, very vividly, in my mind, always!

    I wonder what would happen, if the SIA incident took place on board aircraft belonging to Air India, in India.

    I believe that quote came from my comment. Rather careless of you to attribute it to the wrong person. But since you asked, I will answer. This is not about SIA, which is struggling to undo its blunders. My commentary is a rebuttal to this Indian mainlander’s colorful accusation. The IBs ever deal with them? They’re a smart bunch, and will twist and turn to get your way at YOUR expense. Their mindset is a zero-sum game of ‘I-win-you-lose’.

    As to your advice to not vote opposition, I will ask what has the PAP done to me and mine? I’ve had enough. I will not bargain or negotiate with thieves and traitors. They bore me. I will simply repay them for their deeds by making them normal citizens once more.
