Why do many parents lack ‘time’ with their children?

I refer to the article “Do not organise work activities that eat into family time, Speaker Tan Chuan-Jin urges employers” (Today, Jun 17).

It states that “Employers can help fathers more by being conscious about organising work activities that do not eat into family time

… Giving the example that employers can choose to organise work activities at 6 pm instead of 7.30pm, Mr Tan, who was speaking to reporters at the sidelines of Dads’ Day Out at the Singapore Sports Hub, said this way, employees can get home at 8.30pm when their children are “still awake” and can get to spend time with them.

However, he added that lunchtime would be an even better time to organise work activities, as it does not eat into employees’ family time, and “it’s cheaper as well”.”

I applaud and agree with the above remarks.

After all, according to the article “More than 40% of Singaporeans not clocking enough sleep on weekdays: SingHealth Polyclinics study” (Straits Times, Jan 10, 2017) – “More than 40 per cent of Singaporeans do not get enough sleep on weekdays, according to the results of a study by SingHealth Polyclinics released on Tuesday” (Jan 10, 2017).

Also, Singapore had the highest average annual hours actually worked per worker in the world

… We have probably one of the highest proportion of low wage workers among developed countries

… We are the most expensive city in the world for the fifth year running (The Economist)

So, in summary – Singaporean children may suffer because arguably, we work the longest for one of the lowest pay in the world’s most expensive city?

This TJC, I thought he is still okay amongst the 4G. He statement proved he is also out of touch. No wonder he is relegated to Speaker of the TKSS House.

Please give me a part-time job that pays $1m p.a. and I will have a lot of time for my family.

Best not to have children if parents cant make time for them.
Its defeats the purpose of having offspring.

Tan CJ kay gong, act blur ah? Because of employers organising work activities that eat into family time that’s why parents are spending less time with their children?

CJ isn’t aware that when our door is permanently opened wide for any Thambi, Teck or Terry, sporeans are so afraid that the Foreign Ts will easily steal our lunch and thus have to spend more time guarding it?

If sporean parents do not sacrifice the family time to protect their lunch, who is going to bring food for their children?

    Instead of telling employers:
“can help fathers more by being conscious about organising work activities that do not eat into family time”, CJ should be asking his boss:
“can help fathers more by being conscious about bringing in too many migrant workers to steal the family’s lunch”.

  • Cardboard minister:

It’s not that Singaporean parents do it on purpose but if they don’t work long hours, the employer will use that as an excuse to get rid of them and replace them with supposedly more hardworking FTs.

TCJ is out of touch with ordinary citizens so he doesn’t know.Job security isn’t a problem for people like him.

    Best he keeps quiet.

  • Selfish Sinkie Syndrome:

LKY the despot thought he could control EVERYTHING. In his own words below:

“I am often accused of interfering in the private lives of citizens. Yes, if I did not, had I not done that, we wouldn’t be here today. And I say without the slightest remorse, that we wouldn’t be here, we would not have made economic progress, if we had not intervened on very personal matters – who your neighbour is, how you live, the noise you make, how you spit, or what language you use. We decide what is right. Never mind what the people think.”
    ― Lee Kuan Yew

However, for all his supposed wisdom, he did not understand some very basic human behavioral impulses, which is that the State can’t control everything and if you try to, humans will resist in equally personal ways, even if they may not dare to resist in an overt manner under a repressive regime.

Sinkies cannot protest nor revolt, so the only thing they can and did do is to do a Silent REVOLT – which is to NOT reproduce for the system/nation.
Short of passing a law Forcing couples to have sex without condoms on, LKY cannot control the most Personal and Private aspects of peoples’ lives.

When a nation refuses to reproduce or renew itself with fresh citizens/slaves, the system will simply fall apart due to old age.
No two ways about it. You can’t maintain a cadre of elites if you do not have sufficient tax-base/worker-slaves that can continuously feed the structure.
No grandiose King without large numbers of subjects, No leader if there are dwindling followers.

That is why Singapore is facing a whole bunch of issues from dwindling NS forces, closing of schools with low enrollment numbers, to a dying economy as vibrancy is lost without sufficient youths. Of course, the CPF is also facing huge withdrawals without replacement funds from the next generation of suckers, if you may.

Hence, you see all the stop-gap measures from the elites, trying to give baby bonuses, to delaying CPF withdrawals to massive importation of foreigners and so on… just to keep the show going.

All signs of desperation and exasperation as Spore society continues to be in the top rankings of having the world’s lowest fertility rate in the world for a few decades since.

When a King has 10 Millions subjects, he can probably build a big castle and live in the lap of luxury.
When the King has only 1 million subjects, his tax-base cannot support much extravagance.
When the King has only 1000 subjects, he is no longer a King but merely a gangster chieftain. Numbers matter, so when a society dwindles in numbers, the system collapses very easily.

This is the Silent Revolt that Sinkies are doing, collectively, to disrupt the system.

This TCJ joker has no idea how hard it is for parents nowadays.
They have to pay all the fu*king fees and taxes just to keep a roof over their heads and keep the children fed and clothed.

Do the parents want to spend more time with kids?
    OF COURSE!!
How can they when the fu*king government makes it impossible?

This is why we are fu*ked.

Sinkies are not replacing themselves. Statistics is there to show we are pragmatic enough not to have children. PAP G is so out of (not only)touch but reality to realise the fault lie with too high cost of living against low incomes.

And yet they themselves are having skyhigh pay. If the whole cabinet can half their pay, reduce the cost of living so many Sinkies can have more time with their family and more babies may be borned.

Now they are just simply telling people to spend more time with family but without taking the necessary steps to reduce cost of living and knowingly ignoring the real reasons what causes the problem in the first place, is as good as being out of touch and irresponsible. They are not solving the problem, they are just entertaining you with TKSS. Talk is easy, the will, the affect & the heart to solve the problem is not there. Such kind should be voted out.

OR, we can change clown pap and S$m gang like folks across the causeway have changed najib BN to Dr Mahatir PH.

    truly, we have a choice.

just like world cup football. we say no way we are going to participate in price fixed S$100+ to watch world cup when it is free across the causeway. so we have watched every match without paying the price fixed S$100+.

it can be done, this changing of Government. everything can be done, from changing to Government to watching world cup football without participating in price fixed S$100+ scam.

if there is a will there is a way. we have a choice.

BTW we have never voted pap. never trusted pap. never will. because clown pap and S$m gang deep seated groupthink about money making is not government but legalized robbery.

  • Kiasu Employers:

It’s the sadistic nature of local employers, that’s why no work life balance. Must tekan people like NS. Let’s say you are getting ready to knock off T 6.30pm. Then they will say got urgent meeting. which dags till 9pm. It’s not urgent at all, just that boss wants to vent frustrations on employees.

I was on MC once for one day. At 11pm, office call and ask me go back for “urgent” meeting. It’s another way to squeeze employees for mileage for the miserable salaries given.

I worked for ang mos before. Saturday I drop by office, they said:”why are you here? It’s Saturday.” At the end of the working day, they will say you can go.

How can sinkis give birth to more children looking at the current costs of living here.

Unless you are one of the million dollars minister than you can have the time for the children since most of them are just like doing part-time with super high million dollars income can just relax with children and family.

At the end of the day you may just be giving birth to more future grab drivers here.

    Really poor sinkis.

Currently so many FTs here if don’t show that you are working hard and leave office on the dot soon your employer will ask you to pack and go back home to look after your children.

You can see now Singapore already flooded with FTs and staff from Malaysia came in to take away our lunches all because of pappies who made our lives hard and difficult with cheap labour to take away our jobs.

really sad to see Singapore now become like that from bad to worst since the clown prince took office 15 years ago.

    @ selfish Sinkie Syndrome

THIS IS IDIOT TALKING – if his wisdom, foresight, insight or economics skills is nothing short of divine, and not a mere flash in a pan – we wouldn’t fall from First World into Third world in one generation right under his nose watch.

IDIOT : I am often accused of interfering in the private lives of citizens.

We also wouldn’t have political grooming VIA THE GRC CONTRAPTION going on for decades of TUTORED AND HANDHOLDING apprenticeship to such deplorable failure before you gone to TERN SUA.

Remember his repentance threat in Aljunied GRC in 2011? His “good boy” regime’s most solidified fortified bunkers manned by multiple heavy-weight ministers was over-run falling into political oblivion. Mentor and Emeritus both got a royal send-off in history record instead of coming down from the high pedestal of “I-told-U-so, I-am-forever-right”.

In the end, it is the humility reality that prevails – PAST TENSE is miniscule right and multitude of wrongs and pure self-indulgence.

If the contrary is true, how did the sovereign wealth fund of his lording over performed whilst he was alive? The top name banking shares our SWFs bought were staggering losses of a can of worms.

Like in investing, the self-delusion “smart ones” knows one percent of facts and wisdom right, the other 99% is failure and arrogance in reality. To avoid doubt, ask Ray Dalio, the most successful global hedge fund manager – Bridgewater Associates – he never doubt his own myopia and risks of miscalculation – always seeking, taking and valuing utmost the most strident contradictory views before taking big bets.

In 2018, Ray Dalio famously changed his forecast and economic perspective of global outlook within 24 hours at the World Economic Forum at Davos.

They are the smart ones..altho i dunno if they will have regrets when they get older..well, its their lives.

Actually, of those I know who had kids, they are mostly the ones regretting.
Not all of them, but mostly.
Although they always claim otherwise during casual conversation, but I can hear the strain in their voices as they try to put up a false front of a wholesome family. How many marriages do you know that are on the rocks?
Fyi, Singapore’s divorce rates is climbing very fast.

Don’t be mistaken, some like myself am lucky to have a stable family. I love kids but only when they are young; not when they are teenagers or into adulthood because nowadays they talk like no-big-no-small to their old folks.

Don’t believe the hype that your children will take care of you when you are old or that they will spend time with you to make your golden years truly golden. IF they do so, its a bonus, but keep your expectations low so you don’t get disappointed.

How often do you make time to visit your own parents now? You think next time your own kids will not be equally or more busy with their jobs or business?

Last time no email and no internet, you work strictly 9-to-5.
Now with email and global internet, you are on call 24-by-7
Next time, maybe got VR/AR and new high whatever-tech, you think your children will work in a less competitive environment or have enough time for you? Maybe if you happen to be have lots of property or assets to pass on, then I’m sure they will try to be close to you or your lawyers. Ha!

Just look at the most visible recent example of our own LXL – the dishonorable Son’s behavior before and after his dad’s passing and you already know enough.
