‘Bigging up’ the SAF to send a message to our neighbouring countries?

There seem to be 2 types of communication between the Singapore establishment and the Malaysian government. There are the face to face meetings and then there is the sending of messages through the media. Take for instance the High Speed Rail project – its cancellation was announced to the media by Mahathir before any communication was made between official channels. Indeed, Mahathir’s media statement of rejection appeared to have caught authorities in Singapore by surprise.

Then you have the water tit for tat where each side played the media to score points. Not bad for a journalist I suppose but for the authorities, what does it all mean? There is the direct communication and there is the “read between the lines” messages. So the game begins as somewhere between the official discussions and the media write ups lies the true heart of the topic.

Is it a surprise that the government is now announcing its military prowess? Notice that all this macho talk ramped up after Mahathir retook the helm across the causeway. What with the announcement of the replacement of our fighter jets and then the statement by Minister Ng Eng Hen that the next generation of the SAF will be “faster, heavier and deadlier” at a time when Mahathir is flexing his renewed muscles. Curious timing to be “bigging up” our military might isn’t it? Perhaps this is the beginning of our very own causeway arms race.

But then Ng attempts to deflect from the veiled threats of our military might by saying that it is unnecessary “to respond to their every articulation” as well as not to “jump up and down when their styles and priorities change”. Funny that – isn’t he the one that is reacting by hyping up our military strength?

Well, what do I know about the world of political diplomacy? But I do make the observations and am pointing them out. Whatever about statecraft, I hope the government is mindful of the long term effects of spending big on a defense system that may never be used. Honestly, what can tanks and planes do when all Malaysia has to do is to shut off its water? Perhaps money might be better spent on talks and activites to strengthen the bilateral relationship. Or is it that both states need to foster this love hate relationship in order to deflect from its own problems by painting the other as the bogeyman?

If building up our SAF is what the government plans to do, I can only hope that the government invests in better protection of our men serving National Service. We don’t need any more senseless and preventable deaths just to show our neighbour up.

Please lah, just because of 1 or 2 accidents, you all say our soldiers are not well-protected. I am officer in armour unit. We have never had any safety issues in out-field exercise (even in Exercise Wallaby, Australia) or live-firing exercise. All of us do our best in reservist. The biggest internal threat to our army are those “chao-kheng” soldiers, trying to do everything possible to “siam” NS and reservist. Those people must be taught a very harsh lesson.

Cutting water is serious enough, but add on by cutting the supply of durians will create a big riot here. Maybe Mahathir should consider this. They’ve found a new big love-to-eat-durian market in China, they don’t need Singapore’s.

Biggest threat to sinkiepura is not Msia lah. It is Indonesia.

Current political situation still stable in Indonesia but with a change to a rouge govt, they will use Sg as punching bag, like Sukarno era.

Our sons rough it out to show that we are no pushovers. The SAF is kind but don’t take our kindness as weakness.

    Majulah Singapura!

Boasting about “one shot, one kill?”.
More like one shot, one quickly take to heels, like the SPF at the little India riot.

“Chao-Kheng” anytime better than “Ah Tur” illiterate officer.

Rash Act and coupled with illiterate will lead all soldiers to early graves only.

Please lah PC Ong,….I was an OCS Weapons Team Instructor and I think “many things have changed” ( for the worst ) , these days.

Dealing with “keng” soldiers is part and parcel of a “learning curve” and should be expected from “drafted” soldiers due to “NS Obligations” and not ” tann jiak pen”.

It seems your “Command and Control” and “respect” from your Men, “must have been low”….otherwise why so “frustrated” about “siam” ????

After my NS full time,…and during my reservist,…I have had “Opportunity” to “join” a few “Reservist Battalions” as DyS2.

I came to a conclusion that the “morale” of reservist soldier ( especially from reservist intake ) can be “solely and directly related” to the “attitude and style” of their Commanders.

Trust me…if the Commander is “Down to Earth” and “dosen’t Pull rank”..most “siam type” soldier will “automatically” become “automatic” and “works hard as a team.

Apparently,…you don’t seem to “fall” into this “down to earth,..respectable” group of hands On,..officers ,…do you ?

Maybe, you should “come down from your high horse”

You think many Other Rank soldiers and Reservist “respect and look up” to “white horses” like Patrick who ONLY DID NS as a Researcher in an Aircon room ???

Look at the Mirror yourself !

Btw,….I too have “handled” those “early Batches” or “Other Ranks” Doctors and Lawyers which “went on a Crash course” in OCS to “convert” into “Commissioned Officers from OR rank”….and mind you…it wasn’t easy to “handle these group of specially selected Other Rank reserves”….especially when they are already Lawyers and Doctors in their Profession. …..and YES…even “these group” have many “siams King” with “strong connections” !

So,…lets be REALISTIC and DOWN TO EARTH please !

I just watch the soap opera unfold as the days go by. It’s fun watching Mahathir raise the HSR and the water issue so I want to see what else he will bring up next. Maybe CPF withdrawal for Malaysians perhaps?

PAP cannot be seen as weak or losing face, their arrogance just will not allow it. So now they say they sent a diplomatic note over to which Mahathir replied that we know what they want.

So come on Dr M, show us what else you have got and how you are going to make PAP look bad!

No point fighting over water which you can share with a friend.
