Happy National Day (not Happy PAP Day)

Reading the article: “Does the lack of national flags at HDB estates serve as a litmus test as to PAP government’s performance?” gave me an interesting perspective. The writer suggests that less flags is a sign of the silent protest that citizens are carrying out against the failures of the current government. This may well be true but if that is the case, then Singaporeans have a worrying misconception that the Peoples’ Action Party (PAP) is equivalent to the country of Singapore.

Our flag represents our country. The PAP party, on the other hand, is just a political party. Whether or not they continue to rule is separate to the existence of Singapore as a sovereign state. We should (theoretically) display our flags in the lead up to national day because we are proud of our country and want to celebrate our independence. This desire to celebrate our country should in principle have absolutely nothing to do with the PAP government or its performance. But perhaps, the PAP has governed in a way to blur the lines between state and party which makes this difference difficult to delineate.

Until reading the article, I had assumed that the lack of flags had to do with feeling more and more alien to the country in which we live. It just seems like no matter how much we try to take ownership and raise our views, nothing ever gets done. I see the absence of flags as a sign of giving up. It is futile anyway, might as well just “live my life and see how”.

If the reduced flags are indeed the sign of a silent protest, then I am heartened as it shows that people still care – that there is still a sense of belonging and unity. However, as we mark this 53rd year of our independence, it is important to remember that the PAP government is not and should never be equated as the state of Singapore. They are an elected government. While they are the current government, there is no saying whether or not they will remain so. Yet, the nation of Singapore and its flag should endure whoever the government is.

If Singaporeans are not happy with the current government, the place to voice it is via the ballot box. A display of flags or lack thereof will not affect the outcome of any election or effect any change to our current situation (apart from reducing the celebratory vibe). With this in mind, Happy National Day (not Happy PAP Day).

PAP is celebrating National PAP’s Day but the people is not celebrating. If you care to observe, 50% of those attending the NDP are PRs and new citizens. True blue Singaporeans are those in the Parade. Some are still working, like myself.

NDP is not for true blue Singaporeans!!

I think 70% are celebrating. I want to see if they are still celebrating 5 years from now. I am very sure we will know by then.

By the way I am not wishing anyone here a ‘Happy National Day’. That would be demeaning and insulting.

I agree it is National Day, not PAP day. But whether you like it or not, the PAP forms an integral part of this country. Foreigners who look at Singapore know Singapore cannot be so successful today without the PAP. In other words, if don’t have PAP, we have nothing.

  • Loong Buay Song:

If citizens are buay song with the way the ruling party rules our country, it means we’re buay song with the state of our country. If people are buay song, what is there to celebrate? Then what for display the flag?

Let me ask. If despite being buay song with the govt and our country now, singaporeans still display the sg flags, what do you think the PAP govt will think and say? Don’t you think they’d go round bragging to the whole world that the PAP govt has done a great job? “See? Just look at the no. of singaporeans displaying the country flag! Singaporeans are showing they’re proud of sg. The govt has done very well that almost every household gladly displayed the flag to show solidarity with the govt!” (Yucks! Pui! Imagining them saying this already makes me want to puke!)

Of course the flag represents our country and the PAP is just a political party, but when the PAP thinks that they represents our country, buay song citizens just have to stop displaying the flag! This is also a message to the PAP govt that we’re very fed-up with them for destroying our once heavenly country and we’re no longer proud of being singaporeans! No flag! No celebration, until there’s change after the next GE!

  • Practicality:

You are thinking like a preacher, or a block of wood.

In reality that’s the way common folks express their dissent. Don’t like, don’t hang, regardless how “sacred” it is. Very real practical approach, rather than cheap talk.

Hey, be real. Talk is cheap.

The key is they are not happy, though. Got an idea?

every time we look at pap clown face, or hear his voice, our blood boil.

why does a nation of 3.3m local born not able to find a better Singaporean to run the place? okay. lky, evil as he was, had a compact with 70% sheep. sheep lets lky alone to run the place, lky shall look after sheep.

but, lky son the clown ain’t anywhere near his papa calibre. only the evil part clown exceeded his papa, so much so lky other son and other daughter and other grandson publicly expose the clown evil.

long story short. every pap clan member Lj and Cb all good words about clown only because clown controls S$m in gic and clown wife controls S$m in temasick and only loyal Ljs and loyal Cbs get chance for S$m in gic temasick, and ntuc.

ffff the incest. ffff the cronyism. ffff the nepotism.

if 70% sheep remains sheep there is no hope for sheep’s offsprings. PERIOD.

  • Boh Kia See:

The NDP has been politicised like everything the PAP has done.

You get the PAP contingent marching but where is the WP contingent? Nowhere in the world do you see political parties marching at their national days. The same applies to NTUC contingent. There is no need for these groups to be marching especially the PA.

So NDP is held to showcase the “achievements” (if you can call it that) of the PAP. Parties not associated with the PAP should not attend such events as they are roped in to provide support for the PAP by waving at the PAP contingent. Instead, they should have their own celebrations to show that Singapore is not the PAP and the PAP is not Singapore.

The lack of flags on HDB blocks is an indication of the simmering detachment of the occupants from National Life. They are living in leasehold properties and told they own it. There is a gradual realisation that they have been taken for a ride.

Time to remove the PAP for good to steer Singapore onto the right course so as to reach a higher level of development.

Most of those attending the National Day Parade managed to get their tickets via PAP GrassRooters arrangement, and one can see few true blue Singaporeans there. Just check it out, many new citizens, are now in the Por Lum Par group. We are now being turned to a 2nd class citizen. I still love my country, not PAP

    Singapore does not equal PAP,
but the refusal to display the flag is probably good to send the right message to the fast decreasing 70% dafts who still parroting that past success of this sillyplace is due to PAP.

What about the current huge mess??
Obviously it’s the sole cause of greedy PAP pigs.

The lack of flags also highlighted the disillusioned 70% lost sheeps.
More pain obviously needed to make them face up to reality.
Act now, it’s still probably not too late to save this country.
Change government now means lesser pain in the future and the future generations.

    Wake Up!!

Imbecile. The foreigners are laughing at us. They regard Singaporeans as weak cowards because we lack the guts to throw off the PAP’s boot and change things for the better. Slaves make a master; masters do not make slaves.

PAP may have made Singapore what it is, but it can no longer take us where we want to go. I look forward to when the party is relegated – along with their supporters – to the dustbin of history.

    @ PC Ong,

NAIVE COMMENT AGAIN, as usual from you. A few good men in the pioneering independence is NOT credit due to PAPpy. We have NOT tried the alternative to know which is better of outcome.

If you knows economics or read economic literature intelligently, you must know the first development stages is the easiest to generate GDP and growth. It is very simple – urbanisation and infrastructural spending boom – this is what LEE-jiapore did. Once that stage is past – the real test and challenge comes. FROM THIS POINT PAPpy failed all the way. Professor Krugman warned PAST TENSE in 1990 that his “old formula” is not going to work and will bring us disaster. PAST TENSE IGNORED THIS WISDOM.

It was failure from that point. Foreigners come in with shallow mind comprehension of reality – artificial beauties everywhere but the economic realities behind those tall structures are poverty-stricken peasants now.

    @ PC Ong

IF DR TONY TAN was in the hotest seat and assisted in Finance by Dr Richard Hu, succeeded by Tharman Shanmugaratnum thereafter, LEE-jiapore might have been in a different orbit now.

The Swiss standard of living and asset enhancement politics scam are MONUMENTAL FAILURES. The population recycling economics was confessed by Botak in New Dehli as both politically and economically stupid.

SO IT SPEAKS VOLUME OF THE FAKE BRAND OF BAND AID PLASTER called PAPpys. PAPpys is the cause of our utter failure and hopelessness now.

PLEASE DON’T TRY TO OWNSELF-PRAISE-OWNSELF RAINBOW PAINTING OF SHAMED FAILURES INTO FALSE ILLUMINATION OF WONDER PAPpy success and achievement.

THIS MIGHT DECEIVES GOONDU NEW FOREIGN ARRIVALS BUT….A lot of peasants have now woken up to reality of social and economic disintegration in our society. Imbicile propaganda don’t work so well in the internet age.

Homeless Cat: Imbecile. The foreigners are laughing at us. They regard Singaporeans as weak cowards because we lack the guts to throw off the PAP’s boot and change things for the better. Slaves make a master; masters do not make slaves.
