May Singapore move into a new future!

Today is National Day.

There have been many changes in Singapore over the years, and quite a number are not conducive to the growth of Singapore. Now, a ray of hope exists in Mr Tan Cheng Bock forming an opposition coalition to lead Singapore into a better era. Whether this will materialise remain to be seen.

Do not be mistaken. Saying that it is difficult to lead Singapore into a better era with an alternative leadership is an understatement. The most crucial thing that needs to be done now, prior to standing for the election, is to divide the powers among the stakeholders and set the expectations of all the opposition parties if the opposition coalition actually wins the election. This is an ugly reality that needs to be addressed. Otherwise, the entire opposite coalition will be fragmented by internal fighting for powers long before anything constructive can be done.

As a Singaporean, I personally hope Mr Tan will be successful. I have given up hopes that the current government is competent to do the right thing to lead Singapore forward. In fact, I will even venture to say that Mr Tan is likely to win the election if he leads an opposition coalition into the election because the supporters of Tan Jee Say and Tan Kin Lian are likely to support him, on top of his already strong supporters in the last presidential election. The real difficulty is to unite the many pockets of voices together to lead Singapore out of our current predicament.

I sincerely wish Mr Tan all the best and I really hope he can change Singapore into a better place for all Singaporeans. And here are some changes I hope Mr Tan will consider implementing if the opposite coalition wins the election.

1. Singapore’s Constitution can only be amended under the following conditions.

(a) If the ruling party of the day holds less the 2/3 of the Parliament seats, then the change has to be approved by 2/3 majority within the Parliament.

(b) If the ruling party of the day holds more the 2/3 of the Parliament seats, a national referendum has to be held to get 2/3 majority of the electorate.

This is to prevent any rogue government from changing the Constitution to suit its own needs.

2. All changes pertaining to elections are to be implemented only AFTER the next immediate election. This is to prevent any rogue government from changing election rules to serve its own needs.

3. The concept of group-representative constituency is to be scrapped and all elections are to be contested in single-seat constituencies. Any candidate running for elections has to get in by his/her own capability. This change is to prevent an incompetent candidate from sneaking in into the Parliament by tailgating somebody else’s shadow.

4. To ensure adequate representation of all races, four classes of reserved constituencies are to be formed.

(a) Not less than 15% of all constituencies are to be reserved for Indians.

(b) Not less than 15% of all constituencies are to be reserved for Malays.

(c) Not less than 15% of all constituencies are to be reserved for Chinese.

(d) Not less than 15% of all constituencies are to be reserved for other races not belonging to any of the above 3 racial groups.

The remaining constituencies (not more than 40%) can be contested by any candidate.

5. The rules for contesting in reserved constituencies have to follow strict protocols.

(a) To prevent abuse of the system, the race of the contestant must be as reflected in the NRIC. For example, a candidate cannot contest in a constituency reserved for Malays if his/her NRIC indicates that he/she is an Indian.

(b) The candidate must have basic knowledge of the race culture that he/she is purported to be representing in the Parliament. For example, a candidate cannot contest in a constituency reserved for Indians if he/she cannot even count from 1 to 10 in an Indian language, even if his/her indicates he/she is an Indian.

At the end of the day, these are just common sense to ensure that the candidate contesting in a reserved constituency is able to represent the interests of the race that he/she is purported to be representing in the Parliament.

6. The Prime Minister’s appointment of service to limit to two terms. This is to prevent any individual from hogging power at the expense of the country.

7. The concept of reserving race for the presidential election is to be scrapped since the president does not hold any executive power in Parliament. However, any candidate running for presidential election cannot hold any political party membership for 5 years prior to running for the presidential election. This is to ensure the elected president is totally politically neutral, since his/her main responsibility is to exert an oversight of the government’s drawdown of reserves.

8. I personally believe that the concept of reserving the appointment of Prime Minister by race is somewhat too restrictive and is not really in conformity with the culture of meritocracy. Instead, we can have a system that mandates that the prime minister and the two deputy prime ministers are to be of three different races (three out of Indian, Malay, Chinese and others).

9. None of the presidents since Mr Ong Teng Cheong are particularly effective in overseeing the reserves drawdown by the government. Going forward, information of application of all reserves drawdowns (including the date, amount, purpose, whether approved or rejected, reason behind the approval or rejection) are to be reported in public news media so as to gain maximum transparency and accountability of all stakeholders involved.

To all other Singaporeans – please feel free to express alternative views if you disagree with me on any of the above points.

Mr Tan can hold open dialogues or even hold a referendum to discuss the above points. Let every Singaporean plays a role in the decision-making that concerns the entire country and in moving Singapore forward towards a better era.

If Mr Tan is able to lead an opposition coalition for the next election, I will definitely vote for his opposite coalition. However, I will make clear that I am voting for him NOT because I am against the current government or that I am an opposition supporter. In other words, I do not want a replacement government that goes around blaming the failures of the current system by pointing fingers on the incompetency of the previous regime. Such actions will not make Singapore into a better place.

I will not be voting for the current government because I believe the current regime is leading Singapore downhill. The economy is failing and more and more people are losing jobs. The aged have to scrap rubbish bins and collect cardboards to survive, if they are not committing suicide. Educational stress on the young is so intense that they only learn how to memorise 10-year-series answers without understanding what is going on. We pay massive amount into our CPFs and Medisave, and yet are not able to utilise these resources when the need arises. Costs of living (prices of water, electricity, GST, transportation costs, taxes) are scaling new highs and property prices are soaring like crazy but HDB flats having zero values at the end of their 99-year leases.

The only things that current government tries to do is to build a new airport (when Singapore does not even command any geographical advantage as an interchange hub), a new seaport (when China is building a gigantic seaport right in Malaysia) and throwing more money into the High Speed Railway (even when Malaysia already indicated that it will not be continuing the project). And for people who lose their jobs, the government only tells them to pay more money to enrol in Skillsfuture. However, the main reasons for our economic woes are that we overly rely on US for the TPP (which has been scrapped) and we antagonised China (which conveniently leaves us out of their One-Road-One-Belt initiative). These issues have not been addressed and their mismanagements have cost Singapore dearly. If we read the global news, US economy is breaking new highs. The global economy is not as glooming as painted by our news media.

I am putting my trust in Mr Tan Cheng Bock as he has consistently been a people’s MP even when he was in the government. And I hope that he will be able to lead a new team to reverse Singapore’s current free-fall downhill before we reach the point of no-return and meet our demise. Indeed, I will be more than happy to do my part and offer any help that he requires of us to lead Singapore out of the blackhole.

And I urge all fellow Singaporeans to do the same time. Let us all put aside all our differences, unite behind Mr Tan Cheng Bock and do our part to move Singapore away from our current pathetic state and into a new era. May this National Day bring Singapore new hopes and may Singapore move into a new future!

Cheryl Gupta

Note: Just to be clear. I am not in politics and I am not affiliated with any political parties. I do not know Mr Tan Cheng Bock, personally or otherwise. However, other than Mr Tan Cheng Bock, I really cannot see anybody else who is able to get Singapore out of the current predicament.

I think what was said is sensible as a first step in the possibility of bringing Singapore forward.

It must be said though that if the PAP is not thrown out completely, then Singapore will be heading to be the proverbial fishing village that they like to say we came from. That much I am certain.

The first term will be setting the new path and getting rid of the old army appointees and rid the country of the PAP infiltration into the organs of the State. I am sure there is amply agreement between oppositions to join in this phase of development.

There must also be a reduction of ex-generals from politics. Military officers are particularly bad as politicians. Simply look at the history of Argentina and Chile and other military dictatorship around the world as proof.

Another point which the PAP always gets it wrong and an entrenched view of theirs is that they appoint politicians. I have to state that politicians are not appointed, they are chosen by the people. GRC system dis-enfranchise people of their choice.

There are many policies and actions of the PAP that needs correction. But the fundamental principle is for the people to gain control over the running of our own country. No dynastic ambitions or marry-tocracy.

Politicians in general put into effect the aspirations of the people–not the other way round.

So make sure that the alliance or coalition gets your vote. I am not a politician and do not belong to any political party either.

  • Happy National Day!:

Siege mentality. Almost always scaring and frightening the people with this and that. So people become kiasus and kiasiis. This got to stop.
Why the need to spend so much on defense? Why fighter jets and submarines? All those money spent could have been put to other better use for the people. By all means buid a strong police force and a strong permanent army to defend our island. National service is good training for awareness of the importance of defending the homeland, for instilling discipline and appreciation of moral views for our youth but could be better managed to make it less stressful and time consuming.
Public housing must be controlled to ensure affordability for the masses. Similarly private housing must also be controlled and not be allowed to become a casino for rich speculators and the envy of majority others who cannot afford it. Envy leads to confrontation.
Control and moderate growth to prevent creating class divisions. No need to cultivate policies to create unnecessary extra riches. More wealth does not guarantee happiness.
Allow freedom of expressions, encourage open discussions to open and free the minds. That is the secret of progress.
Provide the avenues and maximum means for all in their pursuit of education. That will ensure progress.
You do not have to hold or keep huge amount of money to be happy. Happiness is to be healthy body and mind, to be educated and with enough means to live a reasonable life.
Progress is a continuing process. Moderation is the key.
Leaders must not be egoistic and get carried away.
Leaders must learn to better themselves and change with the times.
Leaders must be honest, realistic and practical. They are responsible to keep the people happy.

  • From the bottom of the barrel:

Straits Times: Former president Tony Tan tops National Day awards list

What a joke! Tony Tan was responsible for GIC losing BILLIONS when it invested in UBS. He was executive director of GIC and led the team that invested in UBS. He thought he was smart when GIC invested in UBS convertible bonds with a high coupon rate instead of straight equity. What he did not know was how deep the problem in UBS was. UBS subsequently had to issue new equity to raise funds to increase its capital base. This forced conversion of the bonds held by GIC resulting in billions in losses for GIC.

Agreed 101%. PAP has been going by their unwritten motto “You die your business”. They are all for themselves ONLY. Paid millions still claim not enough. Wasting taxpayers’ money like the 3X overspending on YOG, F1, US-NK Summits. And when the poor requested for just an increase of $50 assistance, their reply was “Do you want three meals, in hawker centre, foodcourt or restaurant?”. This PAP G is not caring for the people, all for themselves ONLY. We just hope that the stupid 70% Sinkies wake up in time to kick them out.

Referring to the poll on Singapore’s minister pay, let’s analyse the figures.

    A) There are paid about enough – 9%,
    B) They should be paid much more – 4%,
    C) They should be paid much less – 57%, and
    D) Their pay should be pegged to performance – 30%.

I would split the four into two groups – For (A+B) and Against (C+D)
    A+B = 13% and C+D = 87%. Meaning, out of 10 people only 1 is for and 9 are against.

Now compare to the statistics of GE2015 voters 7 for and 3 against PAP, you find a very interesting analysis. 1 is supper PAP supporter and there are 6 supper blur Fucks. That supper PAP supporter must be Woody Wood Pecker!

I am totally against any form of racial quotas for MPs. This is because I believe we are more mature than the PAP is giving us credit for. I believe in true Meritocracy – best man for the job regardless of race, language or religion. Common sense says that the party that wins the elections will make sound appointments to ensure that the interests of all Singapore citizens will be served. Otherwise they will be booted out.

I also believe the salaries of all Political appointees should be slashed with the PM’s salary no more than $700,000 per year plus 13th month pay. In addition, no performance bonuses for Ministers. Not while there are many homeless people and old folks working as cleaners, collecting cardboard boxes, newspapers, tin cans, bottles and scrap metal just to survive. We currently see how the PAP is driving up GDP (their indicator of economic performance) just to rack up their personal performance bonuses by up to 18 months! This practice must end. The people must come first.

Yes, the PM’s tenure must be limited to TWO terms, after which he is not to hold any political appointments within the government. He can, of course, remain Chairman or Secretary General of his own political party.

Yes, I believe in Presidential elections. Again, in order to weed out the possibility of all manner of riff-raff running in the hope of landing a big pay packet, a deposit of $100,000 is a must. If a candidate fails to secure 20% of votescast, he loses his deposit. If there are more than 3 candidates running, there should be a preliminary round where only the top 3 candidates will be chosen for the Presidential Elections.

The salaries of all those who work in Stat Boards and manage the country’s reserves (eg GIC and Temasek) must be disclosed.

Again, let’s scrap everything associated with race. Be it in school or university places, political appointees, housing quotas or jobs.

    Just my 2 cents worth.

RACE. pap clown played on race. citing stupid reasons why needed president to be malay when he actually meant INDIAN, now milo. he says such race tactics shall cause hime “some” votes but he doesn’t care since he thinks 70% sheep remains as sheep.

NATIONALITY. pap clown openly declared Singapore belongs to everyone. if so, what is nationhood? why is there a need for national service? who are we defending when local born is soon to be outnumbered in own land?

ECONOMICS. pap clown thinks his beggar thy neighbour policies, such as low income taxes to draw in neighbours sons and daughters are going to give him and his clan members many more years of 20 months GDP bonus. so stupid.

HYPOCRISY. pap clown tells everyone family is important, national unity is important, and all such. but his own siblings and nephew think otherwise. his public declaring of fixing OPPOSITION tells otherwise. utter hypocrite.
