Can Ministers” word in Parliament be relied upon in the future?

I refer to the article “Government has not curbed public prosecutor’s discretion for Section 377A: A-G Lucien Wong” (Straits Times, Oct 3).

It states that “The Government has not removed or restricted prosecutorial discretion for Section 377A, Attorney-General Lucien Wong said in a statement released on Tuesday (Oct 2).

He noted that former A-Gs, Professor Walter Woon and Mr V. K. Rajah, “have recently suggested that it is not desirable for the Government and Parliament to direct the public prosecutor (PP) not to prosecute offences under Section 377A of the Penal Code, or to create the perception that they are doing so”.

“Such comments may give rise to the inaccurate impression that the exercise of the PP’s discretion has been removed or restricted in respect of Section 377A.”

In this connection, according to mothership (Sep 9) –

“Janadas Devan, Chief of Government Communications and Director of Institute of Policy Studies on 8 Sep:“Till the majority changes, the “uneasy compromise” on 377A, as PM Lee described it, that we decided upon more than a decade ago, remains the only viable position: Given the majority view, the law remains on the books. But the Government does not and will not enforce 377A.””

So, can assurances given by Ministers in Parliamentary debates on our laws, be relied upon?

What are some other examples of this issue?

Well, for example – the HDB “asset enhancement’ policy.

… when banks were allowed to do HDB loans from 1 January 2003 –

(extract from Parliamentary debate in October, 2002 – “From 1st January 2003, HDB lessees who buy resale flats without any CPF Housing Grant and with bank loans will only need to occupy their flats for one year, instead of the current 21/2 years, before they can sell it in the open market.

Existing resale flats bought without any CPF Housing Grant will also qualify if the lessee re-finances his outstanding HDB market rate loan with banks or fully redeems his HDB market rate loan. The reduction in MOP will also apply to existing resale flats that are bought without CPF Housing Grant and without any loan from HDB”

… and possibly how the media licensing and expected online falsehoods’ laws, may be used to stifle freedom of expression, remains to be seen in the future?

    QUEER VOICES
Vaccines Produce Homosexuality, Says Italian Scientist Gian Paolo Vanoli

    04/01/2013 04:38 PM ET
    Updated Feb 02, 2016

An Italian scientist is arguing that vaccinations produce homosexuality.

Gian Paolo Vanoli, a 70-year-old scientist, journalist and opponent of vaccinations, says that vaccines make people gay.

Vanoli, who’s a proponent of alternative medicine, recently spoke with Vice Italy’s Matteo Lenardon about his ideals.

Via a Huffington Post translation of the Vice interview:

The vaccine is introduced into the child, the child then grows and tries to find its own personality, and if this is inhibited by mercury or other substances present in the vaccine which enter the brain, the child becomes gay. The problem will especially be present in the next generations, because when gays have children, the children will carry along with them the DNA of their parent’s illness. Because homosexuality is a disease, even though the WHO has decided that it is not. Who cares! The reality is that it is so. Each vaccination produces homosexuality, because it prevents the formation of one’s personality. It is a microform of autism, if you will. You will see how many gays there will be in the next generation, it will be a disaster.

Despite these views, Vanoli insists he supports same-sex marriage and gay adoption. He doesn’t “blame” gay people for their “illness,” just as he wouldn’t blame someone who “suffers from cancer or a heart attack,” he told GayStarNews.

“But we have to say that it’s an illness, something that does not respect the order of life,” he told the outlet. “One of the main causes is represented by vaccines, which go against life, disturbing our mind and our spirit. The proof of that is the big increase in the number of homosexuals. Since mass vaccination began, this is the result.”

Some of Vanoli’s arguments, however, have been disputed for more than 30 years.

In 1975, for example, the American Psychological Association removed homosexuality from its list of mental disorders, citing that “research has found no inherent association between any of these sexual orientations and psychopathology.” The APA goes on to say that “no findings have emerged that permit scientists to conclude that sexual orientation is determined by any particular factor or factors.”

Gay rights in Italy continue to lag. Same-sex marriage is not legal in the country, and at least one top politician has publicly likened it to supporting pedophilia.

  • In Truth We Trust:

    In TRUTH we Trust.
Not in man or women who lied and deceived.

That should be the axiom all sensible, thinking, forthright humans should follow.

The professions that are prone to telling lies and practising deception are politicians, preachers, lawyers, statisticians, advertisers, journalists, military generals and con men and women.

So, DON’T be naive and daft to take the words of such people at face value. You do it at your own peril.

  • LIONS:

Laws are indeed needed to MAINTAIN ORDER,PEACE,SECURITY/STABILITY N JUSTICE FOR ALL.
IMAGINE A WORLD WITHOUT LAW N ORDER?

A LAW IS A SOCIETY NORM.
If REPEALING IT SWAYS THE SOCIAL ORDER N CAUSE DISORDERLINESS,THEN,it should not be repealed?
First, one group may demand others adhere to their *choice* n then, another n another?
Its like gay wants the public to accept same sex marriage n having *kids* but do the kids have a *choice* to decide if he wants a male as his mummy?

Again, those who prefers BESTILISM may demand for their rights too?
And,are we going to adhere as well for *justuce*?

Same for laws that are made by A FEW *GOOD* MEN that infringe on the RIGHTS OF THE PEOPLE just necause they deem themselves as rightful *law-makers*?

Take C9F,HDB N WHATNOTS,how many people are suffering from INJUSTICE OF THE SO-CALLED *LAW$*????

  • st snr editiors marc + daryl:

when WP Mr Yaw SL some small indiscretion with a fervently supporting member, pap clown and S$m gang no end hee and haw about sexual immorality.

then clown pap’s own speaker michael palmer and clown pap PA senior staff laura ong more than sexual immorality, no sound no fury from any clown pap clan member, especially those who voiced against the small indiscretion of WP’s Mr Yaw SL. such ffffing double standard.

it seems now clown pap is again practicing blatant double standard.

clown pap mouthpiece the states times, it seems, have 2 senior editors, marc lim and daryl chin both caught with sexual immorality of the worst kind, the bullying of a junior staff, an intern, to submit to them sexually.

what does clown pap hypocrites do? well, so they say, these 2 senior editors have done good work for the clown pap mouthpiece the states times and so cannot be removed from their jobs.

WTF. imagine WP town council even such a case happens? no end of hypocritical self righteous sound and fury from clown pap Ljs and Cbs.

as decent Singaporeans, and normal human beings, aren’t we sick and tired of such hypocrites ruining our once great nation?

when non pap related citizens tell the truth, abuse power by suing. when own brother and own sister much more serious stuff, cannot sue own brother cannot sue own sister can only abuse parleement to ownself declare ownself innocent. ffff the hypocrites. one hypocrite leading a bunch of hypocrites.

so the maxim is very true. if the top is crooked, the bottom all cannot straight.
