Like a spoiled brat, the government throws a tantrum when things do not go its way

If the global ranking is good, we’ll embrace it. If it is bad, we’ll trash it.

This week illustrates perfectly that the government thinks it has the option to pick and choose, to recognise and accept plaudits but categorically reject brickbats.

Both Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat and Social and Family Development Minister Desmond Lee slammed United Kingdom-based Oxfam for ranking Singapore among the bottom 10 countries in the world at tackling inequality and rich-poor disparity.

Completely wrong analysis! Erroneous indicators! They were incensed.

But there was immediate acceptance and recognition, and basking in the adulation when Singapore topped the Wold Bank’s Human Capital Index. The rankings, based on health, education and survivability measures, assess the future productivity and earnings potential for citizens.

This has been going on for a long time now. Global rankings are embraced or thrashed, depending on how Singapore or the government fares.

According to the Economist Intelligence Unit’s latest Democracy Index, Singapore’s media freedom status is considered “unfree.” Singapore fares badly in the media freedom ranking, landing on the 132nd spot out of 167 countries covered by the index – behind Myanmar and Thailand #121, Malaysia #109, Indonesia #71 and the Philippines #49.

No doubt, to the government, this ranking is also deeply flawed and the wrong indicators are used to measure media freedom.

Some say it is normal behaviour to embrace what’s good for them and thrash what’s bad.

But what signals are being sent to young Singaporeans? That you can display petulance and be a bad sport when things do not go your way? But you can lick your lips with satisfaction when the report card is glowing?

We could be encouraging and grooming spoiled brats who think it is perfectly normal to throw tantrums when things go against them.

Who cares whether PAP makes noise when we are bottom of some ranking?

We all just want to focus on the next upcoming election and see which monkeys we can kick out of parliament. That is the more important issue for us today.

The Wold bank didn’t want to endorse the accuracy leh?

Money can do a lot of sponsored study with “sponsored” data, I heard.

    On the other hand,

I am an average Singaporean, so I want to say the Oxfam ranking appears to be in order and true. Is mostly what I have seen, many elderly are working to survive daily meals while the garment paid themselves with millions and millions. Some of us, live in fear and misery, cannot compare the Judyciary with Malaysia, risk jail and max $100K fine to bankrupt. No logic, how to respect? Is like living in gun-point extortion. Sad :-(

I’ll do my part to vote for change so that my children can live a more real freedom lives. For them, With them, I risk.

    both very well said.

there is deep analysis of clown pap fake news BS lying. the gist is, clown pap has parleeement cornered, so much so clown pap legislates as legal what is illegal. even that blunt tool of clown pap, contempt of court, is a legislated piece making the illegal legal. most of the time, via constitution amendment, the suka suka amendment, and why not says clown pap, since parleeement is pliant and obedient.

looking at what Dr Mahatir is doing today on najib, and najib wife, there is hope here in small island nation Singapore.

when New Government forms, Dr Mahatir method sure comes in handy on pap clown and pap clown wife.

so all the current fretting by caring local born citizens, and some others whose motive is uncertain, is a little unnecessary as GE2019 shall come and New Government shall form and constitution shall be changed by New Government to pursue the wrongdoings of each and every clown pap Lj and Cb existing today and in times past.

The govt’s responses show it has little desire
to learn from mistakes and improve. It also
points to a low level of confidence in itself.
    These traits indicate immaturity.
