Will GE2019/20 bring about political change?

The last two years had seen a decline of support for the ruling parties.

A larger % of people, this time of all ages, and including younger minority races are unhappy with our ruling class and political leadership.

You can judge when you raise this subject of political leadership among your friends and associates and listen to the real unhappiness being expressed.

Ex-Civil servants and high ranked ones are speaking their mind. Opinion reviews by ex-Journalists are weighing in with their negative perspective of the ruling class

The not so embraced 2018 National Day celebration is another indication.

Suddenly, many of those who spoke ill of LKY when he was alive now wished he is back in power, and the First Generation political leaders are given praises for their selfless service.

The following reasons for this change of support:

First, the LKY effect has gone away.

Second, the Lee family in-fighting has divided the public support and more legal actions against the younger siblings and their children are making it worse.

Thirdly, the abuse of power and manipulation as perceived by the public to push the EP through without credible reasons have resulted in loss of trust.

Fourth, the push to increase costs in daily life like water, power, education, conservancy, etc without credible explanation and logical review on top of silly explanations by some MPs and Ministers have resulted in a disdain for the Pay And Pay management approach.

Even the gifts of GST rebates, Silver Generation payments, etc have resulted in negative remarks and started the criticisms on the high salaries of Ministers and politicians.

Fifth, push to get ex-Military people into key public positions have not gone well with the educated Singaporeans especially as the performances of these military princes had been dismal.

Six, the four 4G candidates primed to be next PM appeared like the EP exercise. None are ready. There is little credibility. Yet PM keeps pushing when a current DPM who appears to be capable but is not part of the plan is sidelined.

Educated Singaporeans are upset.

Seven, the last Malaysia election threw up a scenario which Singaporeans like.

But more importantly, the people chosen by PH are qualified, competent, committed, showed passion and join in to improve the well being of Malaysia and did not do it for millions in salary.

It opened up an old wound in Singapore on Ministers high salaries. And Goh Chok Tong sealed the unhappiness with his frivolous remark on inadequately paid Ministers.

So the ground is now negative for the ruling party. If this continues for another year or so, 2020 balloting will see some upsets.

SG has a group of uniquely uncertained minds when come to GE. They have a good habit to show supports to Oppos’ rallies but when come to election day they left their thing in between the legs at home, male & female. That’s why we called ouself Uniquely Singapore.

The writer got his facts all wrong. The current legal case against WP has shown their true colours. People no longer trust the WP. The sentiment towards the WP on the ground in Aljunied has turned to bitterness. Not only will the WP lose Aljunied, the question is how badly they lose.

Even outside Ajunied, most Singaporeans are happy with the way things are. Why do you insist on change when the majority do not want it? Isn’t this being undemocratic?

Time to shuffle the cards for a better life.
Vote for Change and halt all the price increases and FTs influx.
Vote for change so that GST will be abolished, straight away saving or you want to consider it as “Bonus” of at least $2500 per year, can go travel every year with your family with that money.

Do it for your own kids future. With the % of U limited here, most kids will be under the mercy of Fts with fake degrees Mangala. Lost of Pride for them. As they signed the CECA, more and more Mangala free to flood in.

This situation that the author has described is nothing new, there was loads of unhappiness in 2011 over the overcrowdedness from the alien influx and way too expensive housing prices resulting in ONE single GRC loss and 2 ministers saying sayonara to their obscene pay.

Sure, a lot are unhappy with the high cost of living and the ineptness of ministers but when aren’t they? How many years have we been saying that the cost of living here is high? Since at least the 90s when I was still in school my parents were already saying that and I’m sure it was the same for you too.

The majority who do not actively follow politics have real short memories. After a while the EP is forgotten, the 30% water price hike and soon to be 9% GST as well. It’s always like that one lah, the majority love to KPCB over every little thing but never have the balls to vote opposition so this is more of the same.

Plus, the author has forgotten the new citizens who mostly will vote PAP since they are the ones holding the good high paying jobs and also have an escape route should things turn nasty for them.

For sure PAP won’t be getting 70% of the vote and even your bookie would give you real high odds for a 70% and above vote share I’m sure. The monkeys are just hoping they don’t lose too many seats in parliament and retain the majority so they will use the usual scare tactics and say that the opposition can’t make it etc etc.

If you truly desire change then the damn kiasees must be the ones to vote in more opposition. Just 30% of us voting opposition in every GE simply isn’t enough.

The next election outcome, frankly, are still stacked heavily in favour of the PAP incumbent. We have a silly electorate paralysed by fear of the unknown re:”What can the opposition do for me?”; who prefers a Genocidal outcome against an uncertain future & basically, too stupid to comprehend!
If one wants a better life, it would be to seek migration to a Western Democracy! But alas, it could be too late at this stage in time. The doors are closing fast & the hurdles to jump over were getting higher. Procrastination (“NATO”) or failure to act are known S’porean qualities & that is why we’re falling down the rabbit hole of irrelevance.
A friend of mine who chose to migrate over to Australia in the early 2000s had found life in S’pore much harder than when he left almost 2 decades ago. On the other hand, having just retired a couple of years ago, he had made a good life for himself & his family. He had fully paid off his landed home with 2 car garage (with no lease decay issues to worry about). His house in Australia equivalent to no more than a 5-room HDB flat in a matured estate in S’pore. His children did well in Aussie schools & entered a Top 8 Aussie Uni without much problems (No 30% local quota in local tertiary institutions). He owns 2 small cars (a Toyota Corolla & a Hyundai Accent) which he bought & fully paid (no outstanding loans) for the price of a present day COE in S’pore. And he can keep his cars for life unlike in S’pore which is limited to 10 years. His Superannuation fund had accrued 8%+ p.a. return over the last 5-6 years giving him a nice nest of eggs for retirement. CPF?
He always wondered if he had not made that fateful decision 2 decades ago what would his life in S’pore be? It was answered after he bumped into a former work colleague at a shopping mall on one of his visits to S’pore. His former colleague was working behind a food stall in a food section of a departmental store. They were colleagues wearing clean white shirts & branded neckties with tailored trousers in executive positions years before. But now his ex-colleague had clearly fallen on hard times. Wearing a work uniform with a silly cap, he was clearly a step down from the days of white shirts, neckties & smartly pressed tailored pants doing office work. These days, they have been replaced by foreigners.
If this was the outcome of a life in S’pore had he not emigrated, his decision was certainly an excellent one which he will never live to regret. He considered it as a life changing & fateful decision.
The story here is that when the majority are stupid fools, you’ve got to take decisions that will benefit you personally & not be dependent on others to decide for you.

There’s something very strange and disturbing going on here in Singapore, and it should not be ignored. It always occurs through our inevitable and ever demanding military-styled type of solution. We’re talking about a very much unpredictable and too risky a candidate to DEPEND on! We should be even more horrified to see our weak-kneed PM continue to endorse for sake of Party, a sham candidate. What’s equally worrisome is that this administration has no subtlety about their intentions. We should be terrified because there is nowhere to run. The more that I observe how he deliberately chooses to represent himself, the more that I believe the story that his glaring lack of political cred imperils Singapore. Everyone is worried about this man being elected. Our enemies must be reveling in the satisfaction that PM Lee has initiated the worst social animosity here in many decades. The hubris and downright stupidity is historic. There are a number of unusual and potentially earthshaking developments taking place in the World right now – on the economics front. Interest rates are rising, China is issuing bonds denominated in U.S. Dollars. American stocks are up on the year. Foreign Asian stock prices are lower. Iran’s oil is being removed from the market. American oil production has plateaued. Household debt formation is heightening. Yet home construction is falling. Increased tariffs and taxes are going into effect for next couple of years-Big time. But we’re talking about an essentially incompetent & mediocre candidate, not dumb or inefficient, he is a little conflicted about how much he wants to be PM. His narcissism may interfere with his dedication. But so far he hasn’t shown any sign of easing his narcissism or hypo-mania aka lunatic fringe.

    @ Haigen-diaz:
Mate! What you’ve just said reminded me very much of the movie plot from THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE starring Denzel Washington & Liev Schreiber. This movie was adapted from a book written by Richard Condon & published in 1959 at the height of the Cold War & just 6 years after the Korean War ended. The film had a very good political conspiracy plot, the sleeper figure (a war hero who was imprisoned) whom embedded himself into the political environment to carry out assassination aiding the elevation of another embedded figure to the highest political office.
    Link: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Manchurian_Candidate
Other movies which had similar lines was SALT (starring Angelina Jolie & Liev Schreiber who ironically was also in The Manchurian Candidate). Both were Russian sleeper spies programmed to be activated by a posthypnotic trigger & embedded into the US Deep State security organisation ie. the CIA to create political havoc.
    LINK: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salt_(2010_film)
Sometimes Life imitates Art! And closer to life would be THE LAST EMPEROR OF CHINA – PUYI who ascended to the Dragon Throne as a mere boy but was caught up in the political turmoil of Qing Dynasty in terminal decline & the tumultous series of events leading to war with Japan, then-WW2 & China emerging a Republic, civil war then converting into a communist state.
What you’re describing alludes to the circumstances similar to Puyi. A sheltered spoilt boy emperor being ascended on bloodlines to the highest position in time to confront a hostile world which he’s never trained nor able to grasp beyond his feeble mind.

    @ Rabble-rouser

    I like your angle.
The bizarre plot of “The Manchurian Candidate,” to the extent that it makes sense, centers on the insight that Joseph McCarthy’s authoritarian instincts reflected values that resembled Stalin’s philosophy of government more than of America’s constitutional system. That emperor Lee behavior is not following the script from a 50-plus-year-old film is irrelevant. Perhaps the current administration learned something from the Manchurian Candidate but this round the enemy is from *within*. A Manchurian Candidate would be welcome in comparison. At least someone competent would be running things. Either way, we’re still in a handbasket headed to hades.

Glad we’re kindred spirits! The more I think about the present day situation, I find the plot resembles a mash-up of 2 films ie. THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE meets THE LAST EMPEROR (PUYI). Whomever is the sleeper embedded inside the system either has a hidden agenda or is a Trojan horse for something bigger in the future (Military Junta aka Myanmar or a Monarchy system like Thailand) – THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE plot. Yet THE LAST EMPEROR still comes to mind – a boy emperor at odds with his ascension to the throne facing a tumultous future where he is ill-prepared & totally unable to grasp with his feeble mind – the product of a sheltered life & sycophantic environment where nothing negative is spoken; everything is bright & sunny! It is the very same eco-system brewing in S’pore where no one dare speaks ill of the future & talk bad about the rulers. Everyone here is so confident that they buy properties using personal high debt leverage (ie. indebted for 30 years).

I think THE LAST EMPEROR would have picked a sharper tool if he was out to plant a sleeper agent in the inner circle. More likely he saw in *lunatic fringe* a perfect agent provocateur, someone who on their own would disrupt and weaken Singapore through idiocy and mental defect rather than political calculation. I guess we need a bigger disaster for Singapore to figure this out. Just like the housing meltdown, the real estate crunch is likely to begin as a slow bleed that gains momentum. By many estimates, two out of every three will no longer meet the original loan conditions and won’t be able to refinance. And with prices for properties expected to plunge rapidly, a vicious cycle may unfold much as it has in the nation’s housing market.
