Is Singapore better than Taiwan?

If you were to put the poorest 25% to 35% of Singaporeans in Taiwan, and their lives will be better immediately. Why?

- Taiwan has free healthcare (S$4.50 to see a doctor vs average of S$35 in Singapore – 2013 Singapore study).
– Childcare is free for low- to middle-income families in Taiwan.
– University fees are only about S$2,000 a year in Taiwan (less than a quarter that of Singapore’s fees which start above S$8,000).
– Public transport in Taipei is half the price of Singapore (transport pass in Taipei less than S$60 vs S$120 in Singapore). It is free to take the bus on most trips on Taichung.
– Average rent in Taipei is S$445 for a unit with your own toilet, but can be cheap as S$220 in New/Taipei – and this is for private housing. For public housing, it is as cheap as S$550 to rent a two-bedroom apartment. (In Singapore, it is S$2,000 or more.)
– And oh, unlimited broadband is as cheap as S$9 to S$17 in Taiwan.

And Taiwan has minimum wage. It will be S$1,030 next year. Singapore’s cleaners earn S$1,060. (compare this with their cost of living.)

Taiwan also has unemployment benefits – 60% of last drawn salary. Pension payments are guaranteed and can be more than 60% of last drawn salary if the person worked for 40 years. People can also start withdrawing from age 60 – in lump sum too.

And all these, the low-income are not forced to apply for them because these social protections are already built into the system and available for everyone. (Unlike in Singapore where the poor have to apply, otherwise they drop out.)

Swimming pools are more expensive though. They are S$4.50. But all the swimming pools come equipped with a sauna, steam room and jacuzzi – a big one, for many people. I stay there for 3 hours at one go.

And Taiwan manufactures its own products, so you can get many good quality substitute products at half the price of international brands.

If you are in the middle in both countries, the standard of living would be pretty much the same locally. But you would get to save more in Singapore, which would allow you to travel further. (But note that the Taiwanese get their money back in pension payouts, and they will actually be able to retire. The same cannot be same for Singaporeans.)

And for the rich, well people tell me if you are rich, it is the same no matter where you are. I don’t know what that’s like. Maybe a natural aristocrat can tell me?

Because you know why? The wages that the poorest 25% to 35% are earning in Singapore aren’t meant to be suited for the cost of living in Singapore. They are meant for the cost of living in a country half the cost of Singapore – like Taiwan.

Which is why it has been estimated that the poverty rate in Singapore is as high as 25% (Tommy Koh’s estimate) to 35% (estimate in SMU report).

Now do you know why the average purchasing power in Taiwan is higher than in Singapore?

In the other countries with a similar GDP capita and cost of living as Singapore, their minimum wages range from S$2,500 to S$5,000 (in Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, the Nordic countries, and our favourite – Switzerland).

But in Singapore, 67.5% of the residents still earn less than S$5,000 while there is still no minimum wage and unemployment benefits in Singapore. Singapore is one of less than 10% of the countries in the world which still does not have minimum wage.

Meanwhile, the prime minister earns S$2.7 million, or more. In fact, the poor in Singapore earn less than the poor in Taiwan. And the rich in Singapore earn more than the rich in Taiwan – which is no wonder why Singapore also has one of the highest income inequalities among the developed countries.

It is not all rosy in Taiwan, of course, but at least you are protected socially. And it is a democracy where you can speak up and protest. And there is greater accountability, because otherwise you sack the government.

I truly concur with Roy on this comparison as I have lived and worked in Taiwan for many years. As a matter of fact I will be going back to Taiwan again next year for work.
I sincerely wish Roy the very best in his current and future endeavors in Taiwan and also returning back to Singapore to continue the fight for true democracy and complete accountability on perennial imperative issues e.g. CPF, HDB etc.
You are indeed one great true blue Singaporean who dares to speak out and sacrifice yourself as a result in the arduous and difficult process of swimming against the current challenging the present establishment.
You have my utmost respect. Thank you and God bless.

Please don’t refer to Taiwan as a country. Per PRC and UN One China policy, Taiwan is a renegade province awaiting re-unification e.g. Hong Kong.

good piece. sadly, will be read by few. those who read it can only envy the taiwanese and wonder how we here, let them do what they do to us. taiwanese politicians actually have fistfights in parliament for the good of the people. here one big happy family towing the party line, end of month check atm and “feel so rich” after checking their monthly cpf statement. us losers here are still agog how our neighbors in malaysia sacked a crooked regime. they don’t seem to realize that those brave malaysians WANTED a change, and did something about it. we pathetic degenerates here are AFRAID of change, and will pay the supreme price for it.

Good on you, Roy, for informing clueless S’poreans that there are better countries & more equitable economies that provide for their citizens & ‘elected’ govt being fair to their electorate ensuring income equality for their people! The phase, “No one gets left behind” comes to mind!
Anyway, S’poreans get the govt that they deserved because they know no other voting for PAP again & again despite clearly their own standards of living were going downhill since 1998. And the PAP is guiding their electorate into an unsustainable future & a horrendous pathway that will virtually end in tears & sorrow.
One thing that impresses me about Taiwan was their vibrancy & energy. Their night markets were an enjoyable experience to visit & partake in their simple yet rich culture. It invoke past memories of S’pore’s previous night scenes eg. fortnightly Pasar Malams, nightly roadside hawker markets at Bugis Street complimented with Ladyboys during the late evenings, Orchard Road & Wayang Street night markets which were carparks during the day! The PAP in their haste to sanitize & control, they have eradicate those facets of life that older S’poreans used to know but now, the new generation had no clue.
One facet of Taiwan I’m very impressed with was their agro-technology advancement & their intensive methods growing food to ensure some self-sufficiency. Taiwan like Israel are small countries located within hostile neighbourhoods. Countries like them focused on self-sufficiency & some independence from strategic imports eg. oil, food in case of hostilities, siege ie. a naval or air blockade preventing imports.
PAP population growth policy counters against this strategic thinking. IT INCREASES S’PORE VULNERABILITIES & CREATE AN UNSUSTAINABLE ECO-SYSTEM! Why? More population means more mouths to feed. And S’pore have no food growing industry to could even feed 1% of the current population. This dependency on food imports reflects of the high margins in grocery markets of market leader NTUC Fairprice & on Giant & Sheng Siong. No wonder, NTUC Foodfare had the firepower to buy over a bigger player ie. Kopitiam Holdings to consolidate their position in Food Courts & cooked food catering service.
PAP is trading S’pore’s long-term & strategic future for short-term gains. Why? Because their renumeration scheme & KPI performance bonuses were dependent on GDP growth & generating more short-term profits!
Water is another area where S’pore will face issues in the future. 75% of our water needs are supplied by M’sia yet some planners with the PAP elites wants to boost population to 10 million. The $$$ in their sights is blinding them to real life issues.

Please lah, Singapore should be compared to New York, London, Paris, Tokyo and all other great cities in the world. You insult Singapore by comparing it to Taiwan and shows a complete lack of patriotism on your part.

If Taiwan is any good, why so many Taiwanese want to leave? Because it is hard to find good-paying jobs in Taiwan so they prefer to come to Singapore instead. Property prices in Taipei are overvalued, so that is why they prefer to buy property in Singapore instead, which offers greater safety and value. And for all the social benefits you mention above in Taiwan, it is not free. Taiwanese have to pay higher taxes than us in Singapore. So remember, Singapore is a 1st world nation while Taiwan has not reached, and will never reach, that status.

Yes, compare Singapore to new York, London, Paris, Tokyo and all other great cities in the world. How much do they earn over there? And the social benefits they get. They also have free universal healthcare.

In Singapore, they make the rich and poor pay the same taxes by emphasizing regressive taxes so that the rich can be spared paying their fair share of income tax pertaining to their income brackets, as well as capital gains tax, estate duties, etc., all benefitting the rich more than the poor.

Taiwan is not an independent state and has not declared independence although she has all the attributes of an independent state. PRC will not allow or accept Taiwan’s declaration of independence. PRC has missiles aimed at the island ready to go if they do so. And UN recognize one china policy. No one can intervene if PRC is going to claim back Taiwan by force. That’s a fact.
However, PRC doesn’t want another civil war so they are patiently awaiting peaceful re-unification. And that is also an undeniable fact.
    Please read up.
