Media Literacy or Critical Thinking?

The PAP government will be introducing guidelines on ways to spot fake news by next June.

While any effort to develop the people’s critical thinking abilities must be encouraged, I would just like to point out the hypocrisy of the State who in the first place made sure the people swallowed whatever they dished out on the dominant media they control for years and years.

Thanks to the Internet, this choke-hold at the centre of the mind bending false consciousness spell that Singaporean’s are bound by, has slowly but surely been eased somewhat.

Do we now need media literacy or plain old critical thinking skills more? The PAP Government don’t want the latter they just want you to believe that if the State Media does not say it, it isn’t true.

Where was media literacy or more pertinently the emphasis on critical thinking before when we needed it most?

Media literacy encompasses the practices that allow people and the ability of a citizen to access, critically evaluate – analyse, and create or produce information or media for specific outcomes.

Does the Government really want our citizens to develop the necessary skills, competencies, knowledge and habits of mind that are required for full participation in media-saturated societies?

I doubt that.

Having got the people addicted to the opium of State Media, they now cry foul and want the people to eschew online media which is fiercely critical of the PAP Government disrupting the State’s tightly curated fake news.

What the PAP say is always supposedly not fake but what others say that is critical of the PAP is almost always fake.

The so-called cyber break-in hoax will also see draconian laws passed to restrict internet content.

Gahmen will then be able to get any information from ISP’s to ‘protect’ you or to clean you out.

“The PAP government will be introducing guidelines on ways to spot fake news by next June”. This must be joking!!

My only way to spot fake news is very simple. Anything from the PAP is fake news!! When this PAP Govt says it gives you a chicken wing, some how some ways, it will take back a whole chicken.

WTF, the govt gave you voucher this voucher that one time only, but you need to pay back daily!!

That reflects the minds of the PAP elites themselves. To them, thinking is mechanical. Like the way they think. That it can be imparted. Shown the way by them. So that Sinkies can have the minds of Grace Fu or Josephine Teo or Lim Swee Say.

Now you understand why Singapore leaders are the least impressive in the world? Right at the bottom, below even those of most of the Third World countries.

  • What is Critical Literacy?:

Critical thinking is the objective analysis of facts to form a judgment. “Critical thinking is a complex subject, and different definitions exist, which generally include: the rational, the skeptical, and the unbiased evaluation of factual evidence. Critical thinking is self-directed, self-disciplined, self-monitoring, and self-corrective thinking. It presupposes rigorous standards of reasoning and mindfulness of its processes. It entails effective communication and problem-solving abilities, as well as a commitment to overcome our native egocentrism and sociocentrism.

  • Rabble-rouser:

Media Literacy or Critical thinking? None of either options, I’m sad to say! Media Literacy was only the superficial ability to read & gasp the subject content that was written by the Media. But how much independence the media has & how much content that was written by media journalist is objective & unbiased were moot points? And whether the reader believes in the content is another matter altogether?
Take SPH, for instance, many in the public sphere considered SPH Newspapers were pro-govt & extremely bias towards the govt long ago. SPH’s going into increasing irrelevance since 2000 was attributed to the Internet. A lot of critics would say that SPH’s newspapers lost relevance to the News & Social Media Bloggers & to the Internet News providers. But when one looks at the total picture, the real issue was their newspapers had lost their monopoly over Advertisements & Job vacancy appointments which accounted for the bulk of their revenues. The Internet provided the competition & discounted the cost of advertising to levels that SPH were unwilling to compete against. SPH acted in the same manner as Kodak; unwilling to migrate to the new media eco-system because they are so addicted to the high margins under their old eco-system.
The truth was that nobody believed in the news contents that SPH Newspaper’s put out – it was for the advertisements & job that people bought newspapers. Media Literacy at the end doesn’t mean belief in the content written. That belief & credibility was formed in the reader long ago!
Critical Thinking is flawed in the S’pore context. There were huge information gaps in the S’pore data eco-system & the academic environment isn’t exactly credible to the public due to lack of independence. The problem with Critical Thinking is the environment that Critical Thinkers do their stuff. Many so-called Critical Thinkers [in S'pore] lack real-life exposure to the Global context; remained huddled in their Ivory Towers reading 2nd or 3rd hand news to form “objective” judgements without understanding the source. S’poreans tend to be clannish even when travelling abroad & S’porean youngsters studying overseas seek their own for companionship without taking the effort to understand foreign cultures & lifestyles. The few that do ultimately never come back to S’pore.
The PAP in their haste to create their own perpetual power eco-system, had created a huge void within their own constituency & electorate. The harsh conformist eco-system where Independent-minded thinkers can’t co-exist with Groupthinkers. This had lead to a Brain-drain of real Critical Thinkers leaving an empty shell which the PAP were contented to rule over. The Sharpest Minds had already left the room -…

  • Rabble-rouser:

Another article which shows the constant slipknot used for S’pore political scene by S’pore’s type of “CRITICAL THINKERS” & by “embedded” PAP IBs.
    Read:https://www.theonlinecitizen.com/2018/11/06/it-is-the-oppositions-role-to-question-and-the-incumbents-role-to-heed-the-questions-and-come-up-with-the-solutions/
EXCERPTS: “Being concerned with rising living costs and stagnant wages in any society is a very legitimate concern. It is therefore surprising that a fellow citizen has seemingly dismissed these valid worries as “populist”.

In his letter, a writer by the name of Sean Lim Wei Xin has criticised opposition politician Lim Tean of making invalid promises in his Facebook videos. Sean further stated that Lim did not “propose viable alternatives”.

I have never fully agreed with the opinion that one has to have a better idea before one can ask questions or criticise government policies.” [END]

This is the type of enemy that S’porean voters were fighting against for a better outcome. People like Sean Lim Wei Xin (an IB?) who lives amongst us to create doubts & second guess opposition’s opinions & statements. That enemy was within ourselves.

Another term I can think of was XENOPHOBIC after locals agitated against the incessant influx of foreigners displacing locals in jobs & raising the cost of living. And PAP got away with it because they can. Selected group of people (mostly Sycopants & PLPs) stood up, given broad media forum to vocalise & drown out the legitimate concerns of the masses. Guess in the end who won?
Let be frank & say that people especially PAP voters in S’pore were complicit for creating this hopeless situation. There are a broad section of wishy-washy individuals who can’t make their minds up. Called them fence-sitters whose action were dependent on whatever stimuli that crowds out all the rest. When PAP controls the media & broadcast booths – you get the reactions of an insipid masses easily swayed by louder voices & financially organised support.

  • Haigen-diaz:

For Critical Thinking, no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the Singaporean public. And as such ‘Media Literacy’ should be front page news and kept there until the purveyors of such nonsense finally slink away, with their falsehoods tucked between their legs, in richly deserved ignominy. The vast gap between academic reality and the serial right-wing fantasies that have dominated political discourse in this country for too many years is not a matter of opinion; it is a matter of fact. The proliferation of a siege mentality by this government is a reflexive vindictiveness of a ‘cornered animal’ with signs that the nation is in a rot. Intelligent analysis is just not a value any more. Being ‘critical’ means that you are in a position to disrupt the lives of those in power and that makes you dangerous. I should say the PAP Govt. is afraid of its’ own shadows. And academic terrorism ought to be fiercely battled, in order to ensure the integrity of scholarship as a signal contributor to our national economic efforts and development.

  • how to cheat PAP style:

Dr Lee Siew Peng: They knew exactly how long to trade to maximise profits. They ensured good value, service and quality because they knew customers voted every day — not once in five years like our General Election — with their feet and wallets. “Quality control” by some office-bound executive was unnecessary

Sinkies don’t even have the choice of fair elections every five years. It’s like you either pay for a poor-value $6 PAP meal or you get none. Like you can only vote for Halimah or you vote for no one else. Rules will be changed to ensure that.
