What are our multi-million dollar ministers doing to counter the Kra Canal threat?

I disagree when people say that Singapore has no natural resources. Our strategic location at the tip of the Malayan peninsula is our best natural resources. It has helped us prosper over the centuries and spins off many other industries such as finance, warehousing and logistics, etc. and created hundreds of thousands of jobs for our people.

The idea of constructing a canal across the narrowest part of Istmus of Kra in southern Thailand to enable ocean-going ships to sail between the Indian Ocean and South China Sea and saving 1200 km is at least 300 years old. We must be ever mindful that with the Kra Canal and the competition that it can potentially posed will not be the same at all as another Johore port or Pasir Gudang port.

But the conditions and feasibility today are totally different from conditions and feasibility just under a century ago. In domestic Thailand today, the Muslim insurgency problems in southern Thailand are much under control while opposition voices are also much muted. The Thai government is also much receptive to the idea of a Kra Canal being built.

The competition is nearer than most people realised. Internationally, the technology for that project is available and China is more than able and willing to bankroll it. So, where does all that leave us, Singapore? What can that dishonourable son and his Trade and Industry Minister Chan Chun Sing do to effectively counter it? Stare at each other and suck their thumbs or what?

To be honest, I am not hopeful.

The Singapore ports and the industries and business opportunities that our ports spin off account for a very substantial part of our domestic product. If the PAP government fails to come up with effective measures and plans to ensure its relevancy in the face of formidable challenges from the possible Kra Canal, where does that leave Singapore?

PAP Ministers can all retire as multi-millionaires all over the world. But the vast majority of our people will pay very heavy prices again for their own stupidity and the PAP government’s incompetency. Take a good look at your own children and the many thousands of our school children and then dare to think harder.

They may represent just 20% or 25% of our population but they are 100% of our future.

    Three countries benefit most are China, Thailand and Malaysia. Singapore will be cut off definitely. The Chinese Government has already pumped in $30billion commitment to build this canal. They are all out to cut off the arrogant porUSAlampar Dishonorable Son.

    Should this project happen one port location at Ha Tien (Vietnam) bordering both Vietnam and Cambodia is a must stop port for freight. But our million-dollar scholars (without a single day of private working experience) are happily enjoying their aircon office, no forward planning. Even giving them a golden goose they will turn it into dust. NOL is one good example. They only know how to bully locals, but when coming to overseas matters, no answer.

    Just like sending a kid without working experience to talk a group of experienced business people, not only makes me laugh but feel ashame. They even send him to talk to the Chinese on trade, the Chinese will eat him for breakfast.

    The Chinese are not only laughing, they have already sized him up and know how to deal with Singapore when this potential PM kid becomes PM.

    We are fiack and doomed for sure, under PAP.

    Simon Lim & All,

    The Kra Canal is made up of very hard rocks on the sides and also deep down too. The British gave up. As it was an engineering nightmare. Further north and south there were villages who refused to move. The seabed is also just as shallow with very hard rocks too So the questions are:

    1. Even with new more powerful explosives, how do you haul those very hard boulders onto a ship stable enough onto it?

    2. Because, how do you control their sizes and so weights too?

    3. Even if can to a certain extent only, how much effort in time and in costs too be incured to make it pragmatic in every aspect of it?

    That said, I’ll ,eave out ore teething issue for now you nad readers of your article can fathom and present workable real life solutions.

    Globalization is receding under Donald Trump’s US Presidential mandate. The Globalists are in retreat everywhere as the political backlash from voters growing disillusioned about Globalisation & were more concerned about uncontrolled immigration, industrial outsourcing, jobs preferences for foreigners & income growth are issues which will continue to dominate the political narrative. Generosity will be in short supply & liberal values will not be favoured by voting majority. S’poreans should get out from under their rock & understand the Global dynamics. Or else, get a shock of their lives down the road.
    If Trump gets a 2nd term as POTUS, S’pore will be dead by the end of his 2nd term. Geo-political forces & dynamics are changing the trade routes & the nature of trade. Strategically, Trump wants to reduce China’s importance as a major trading partner. And he wants to reduce US trade deficit with China. The US-China trade dispute will be 2 elephants fighting & stomping on the ground. And the ground is full of ants like S’pore who will be caught (stomped on) in the crossfighting between the giants.
    Trump is shifting trade from Trans-Pacific region (with China, North Asia & SEA) to Intra-America ie. Mexico & Canada. Noticed that the trade wars with China went parallel with individual concluded trade deals with Mexico & Canada which replaced the Tripartite NAFTA deal done years ago.
    The US is still the largest consumer society globally. Everything goes through the US for profit because the US$ is the reserve currency & most, if not all commodities were denominated in US$. It is the most sought after economy to trade with. The US is still the most advance technological country globally. All their weaknesses were overplayed while their strategic advantages downplayed by the media. The US have achieved energy self sufficiency with depleted well fracking along with technological advancements in renewable energy.
    The world need US but the US doesn’t need the world. And when the US has achieved one of the cheapest energy driven eco-system, you’ll see the fringe collapsing because they can’t compete with US. Imagine S’pore with it’s high cost structure. Duh?

    The current situation is this:

    The main channel through Straits of Malacca to China, HK and Korea is being replaced by the new OBOR and other trade links.

    1. Syria / UAE / Saudi Arabia to Penang / Malacca then by rail through Indo-China to China.

    2. Syria / UAE / Saudi Arabia to Myanmar and by pipeline to China

    3. Iran to Afghanistan / Pakistan to Russia & China

    3. Iran to Russia to Japan / Korea

    This secures North Asia’s oil trade without risking US closure of Straits of Malacca at $ingapore (chokepoint).

    $G is a US vassal state and is being treated as a US military and economic base for aggression against China

    $G is finished. It will have no economic when Malacca / Penang becomes operational as part of OBOR and banks and other currency houses move to cheaper and better working areas now being built.

    The pappies and their wealthy friends will have fled – but I still will be happy to see 70% of $G population work as labourers in Malaysia

    @ RDB

    TAKE A LOOK AT KING OF THE HILLS MINE in Western Australia operated by Red-5 as an example. Here is the weblink.

    https://www.resourcesrisingstars.com.au/news-article/red-5-eyes-huge-game-changer-switch-narrow-bulk-mining-wa-gold-project.

    I will explain why rock hardness is NOT an issue.

    RDB: The Kra Canal is made up of very hard rocks on the sides and also deep down too. The British gave up. As it was an engineering nightmare. Further north and south there were villages who refused to move. The seabed is also just as shallow with very hard rocks too So the questions are:

    Look at the picture of the beautiful contour of the access ramp road from the surface to the bottom of the mine pit and from the bottom of it it operates an an underground mine with stoping excavations down deep to access the gold-bearing zones. So @PC Ong is dumb as usual to jump onto the bandwagon and “agreeing” with you when this goondu knows nothing about geology and mining operations.

    PC Ong: This will never come true. As the poster above @RDB said, the technical difficulties are too much. Also, Thailand always cock-up things, they can never get it right.

    If either of you read the content of my given weblink and do a data research of Darlot mine you will find that it was at one time owned and managed by Forsayth NL some 30 years. I owned shares in Forsayth NL before it was taken over by Plutonic Resources NL which was in turn owned by Malaysia Mining Corporation. Darlot changed hands many times in the last 30 years and each time, the open-pit excavation at the surface expands without difficulty DESPITE VARYING HARDNESS OF THE PIT WALL ROCKS.

    Each owner expanded the open pit cutback with beautiful contours without collapsing of the wall face of rock softness or inability to expand the size of open pit excavation due to “too hard” the rock wall encountered. Nor do they have difficulty extending the depth and spread of underground stoping.

    In this days of geotechnical skills, nothing in nature’s gift of rock hardness (geologist call this rock competence) prevents mine pit and underground extensions.

    Kings of the Hills and Darlot could be around for another 5 to maybe 20 years longer or more.

    Red-5 is going to blast the rocks transforming it from narrow underground mining operations to bulk-mining by expanding its open cut at the surface.

    @ RDB & @PC Ong spoke too fast from a lack of exposure to mining operations.

    Please don’t denigrate Thailand! Thailand is the 3rd major Automobile assembly plant in Asia after Japan & China. The Honda HR-V that most S’poreans desired & drive was assemble in Thailand.
    Thailand also exports processed food products worldwide providing lots of jobs to Thais & bringing in revenues. Their economy is so much broader than ours that it’s no comparison. The rice that you eat everyday is grown in Thailand. Without Thailand’s rice, what will you eat? Grass?
    Don’t forget that the Thais are so rich that they can even buy English Premiership Clubs re: the recent tragic death of Leceister City’s Thai owner. Do we have anything to compare except for Peter Lim’s Valencia [which is only a 2nd tier club in La Liga]
    Please don’t let your coloured view of S’pore blind you to other countries. Thailand (BKK) & M’sia (KL) have already caught up & passed by S’pore ages ago. The Kra Canal is just a pipe-dream! The only reason for ships circumventing the Straits of Malacca involves bulk trades, bulk liquids [mainly refined Palm oil] & specifically the oil/gas trades. For S’pore, oil & gas trades were an important consideration as Jurong Island processes much of the oil & gas for Asia/Oceania as a Swing Producer. The tankers offload their cargoes on offshore platforms off S’pore waters & were trunked via pipelines into refineries at Jurong Island. The Downstream/Upstream Processing Infrastructure in place were already well-established in S’pore. Kra Canal doesn’t make much sense because a lot of infrastructure would have to be replicated along the line & that would involved trillions of dollars simply for a few days cost savings.
    Also, PSA (S’pore) does a lot of Transshipment & consolidation for the container trades for certain reasons just like HK. it has to do with trade documentation papers eg. Certificate of Origin for tariffs calculations (Trade Agreements) & for tax reasons (Transfer pricing, tax accounting).
    The real issues here (& not Kra Canal) involves the realignment of trade routes, the nature & dynamics of Globalisation & the future of Fossil Fuels.
    1. TRADE ROUTES REALIGNMENT
    S’pore’s mantle of the World’s busiest port had already been taken up by Chinese ports two decade ago. It’s a No-Brainer that as Industrialization & Manufacturing activities congregate in China, the Logistics & Warehousing would also congregate in China. What’s left in S’pore & PSA were only Transshipment & Consolidation activities. And China was pursuing direct trade routes;
    * Modern Silk Route via High Speed Railway into Europe specifically Poland;
    * Summer Artic Route (though opposition by Environmental Groups & Ecologists);
    * Offshore platforms off Myanmar coast, Oil & Gas Refinery & Oil/Gas pipelines into Yunnan Province; &
    * China’s One Belt & One Road strategy (a clear Anti-S’pore move).

    2. DYNAMICS OF GLOBALISATION
    Truth is that Globalisation is in rapid retreat. There were political upheaval & a voters backlash against the Globalists & their agenda. And Donald Trump is leading the charge to change the dynamics of Globalisation. Trump’s trade war with China has 2 implications; one, the shift from Trans-Pacific trade with China to an Intra-Continental trade involving USA’s 2 vassal states ie. Mexico & Canada where the US have undue influence over both of them. Of course, there are Geo-Political issues at play here. One, is to redress the financial trade imbalance between US & China & two, is to strategically isolate China’s growing wealth trading with the US & consequently growing military strength by taking away their means of accumulating wealth at the expense of the US.
    This Geo-Political shift have dire consequence for S’pore because as trade winds down in the Pacific while being ramped up for both Mexico & Canada, beneficiaries of Trump’s Geo-political shift.
    3. FUTURE OF FOSSIL FUEL
    The sudden collapse in the oil price after the dramatic rise due to Iran’s oil embargo & Saudi Arabia’s Brutal Political Butchering of a dissident in their Turkish Embassy which lead to Saudi’s threat of using the Oil weapon. It is telling in one effect ie. That Oil is no longer a Threat! That the oil market speculators could only sustained for such a short period of time revealed the long term trend for oil eg. it is trending downwards.
    And Fossil Fuels itself is under disruption from Technological advances in Growing Efficiency of Renewables & in Battery technology.
    I’ve watched a TV program over the Internet where a series (20+) of Offshore Wind Turbines were being installed in the North Sea off the Dutch coast. I’ve also read the rapid escalation of solar panel farms erected on sun-drenched uninhabited lands creating a baseload of electricity generation, large-scale battery storage & consequently, energy self-sufficiency.
    Plus the eventual migration from the Internal Combustion engine car to a fully electric car in the next decade would have huge consequences for the Oil trades. OPEC is finished!
    If we’re to look at S’pore’s context;
    * Jurong Island would be obsolete in the coming decade;
    * And PAP’s obsession with high cost of land deviates S’pore from ever adopting the cheaper renewable energies option because they required a horizontal spread to capture the sun’s ray (lot’s of land); &
    * locked onto high capital [Hyflux's debt situation] & high energy requirement desalination plants [Tuas Spring} looking stupid when S’pore has substantial rainfall & only requiring rainwater harvesting & retention for water self-sufficiency. We just need to…

    EXCERPTS:
    “The United States and China are locked in a spiraling trade war that has seen them level increasingly severe rounds of tariffs on each other’s imports.
    …fits in with U.S. President Donald Trump’s efforts to isolate China economically and prevent Chinese companies from using Canada or Mexico as a “back door” to ship products tariff-free to the United States.
    ….the provision gave the Trump administration an effective veto over any China trade deal by Canada or Mexico.
    If repeated in other U.S. negotiations with the European Union and Japan, it could help isolate Beijing in the global trading system.
    There’s no China deal that’s worth losing a ratified USMCA.
    Mexico’s business community sided with the Trump administration in endorsing the pact.”
    This is the Art of The Geo-Political Strategy that is being played out between the US & China. The US is the center of Consumption ie. most goods are consumed by US consumers simply because the US$ is the world’s Reserve Currency & the US are the World’s Main Export destination. USMCA will empowered Mexico & Canada to provide for much of the US’s needs, yet the US can influence over their politics unlike China. That is why the Age of the Pacific Rim Era might never happened under Trump’s Administration because he seeks to end Globalisation, isolate China economically & promote Intra-America trade instead. And S’pore will be one of the biggest loser after China because our economy is strongly configured for Globalisation & dependent on China’s growing wealth & trade links.
    Someone says that S’pore have 10 years to prepare but by 2025, the end of theoretically Trump’s 2nd term (if he’s not impeached & gains a 2nd term as POTUS) – only 7 years from now! Not even 10 years to prepare! The urgency is now!

    Chow amatuer thinker mindsets!

    You lack knowledge and clearly not engineering trained. China already has cheap and easy solutions to create the kra canal in short period of time.
    Please educate yourselves by researching YouTube. If not I will educate you.

    Singapore authoritarianism is dwarfed by China Authoritarianism.

    Sovereignty of small states has always been questionable.

    One mountain high, another much higher exist.
    Sg I weak compared to China. Internally, sg can control everything. They lose control outside its territory.

    Every technical challenges to build the Kra has a ready solution. Technically speaking, it can be built rather easily and within budget and time. Quite easy.

    It’s now purely a political decision .

    How to link south and north? So easy. All ready made solutions well proven for decades already exist :

    Suez canal.

    Underground tunnels also can easily be built.

    The pros outweigh the cons.

    Japan, China and Malaysia will benefit from it. Even south Korea and Taiwan. Everyone except Singapore. SG has no control beyond it’s borders.

    SG has no LKY. Absolute Truth. Undebunkable.

    Domestically aside.

    Tunnel or not tunnel , until the kra project confirmed and announced internationally, all your guesses is as good as mine and all above are just exchanged discussions.

    If politically change hands it can still be delay or axe as Malaysia has illustrated. Of course it can be revive as well.

    Youtube ? As far back as 2014 many here spread how kra canal’s threat with youtube links. I always feedback dont worry about 山寨大國 but these many f me ( nvm ). In the end 4 years today wheres the canal 鬼影冇一個?
    Then came Malaysia election , many again say past opposition current adminstration Dr M if win will work with 山寨大國 to corner us , i spoke out otherwise. So what happen today.

    I m not saying whos smarter but who can be 100 zhun.

    Youtube ? Better you provide links to teach people how to pickup new skills or a new sport e.g. how to ride a ripstick or whatever. Or how to check voltage current rating so that u wont buy the wrong heater and get electrocuted in the shower.

    In a single generation from 1980, the Communist Chinese “private equity” interests built up a dominant economy by transferring the “American Industrial machine” to the People’s Republic of China and like U.S., it will assert itself as a regional hegemon with a Chinese version of the Monroe Doctrine for Asia. One can see China becoming dominant in East Asia politically and militarily but not in the world arena. Just as the U.S. the world’s only hegemon is too distracted with the Middle East to focus on Asia, China the regional hegemon will become too distracted with a host of problems in its own backyard to focus on becoming a world hegemon sharing borders with more than 10 countries and is involved with unresolved territorial disputes with many of them. Caution should be exercised when viewing Chinese government capitalism through the lenses that we view our own government and capitalist elites. True, the principles of economics apply in much the same way across the world, but the Chinese worldview and history is vastly different from our own. Western media devotes a lot of attention to unrest in China and protests by the common people against corruption and mistreatment. They tend to assume that a democratic transition is just around the corner in China. They are wrong. The Chinese have never voted en masse in their history and have always been strongly attached to and tolerant of centralized power because the Qin, Han, Tang and Song dynasties brought relief from centuries of miserable wars among competing warlords. To them, centralization and forced unity have become deeply ingrained in their zeitgeist as the salvation from chaos. A yearning for democracy exists among some Chinese, but a deep terror of factionalism pervades the culture. With no home-grown tradition of democracy, it is highly unlikely that the pseudo-communist government will fall and be replaced by a system that fits Western ideals.

    -Cont’d

    For 20+ years China has been moving throughout the world buying up resources, outbidding Western post-colonial interests in doing so, and lending money to 3rd world countries. Thus China breaks its dependence on foreign raw materials. Thus they break their dependence on foreign profiting on Chinese manufacture and their dependence on US/Euro markets. They lose the US market while Americans suffer a self-induced inflation. But China continues to sell to the rest of the world at even deeper discounts while Apple et al. try to figure out where to build new plants. Thus they lock in new markets, while US, through the Looking Glass, run as fast as it can just to stay in place. US need China and her Asian neighbours more than they need US now. China pumping up demand by infusing credit into the system which is fostering a stock market boom. China’s manufacturing slowing down will also mean drastic changes in its imports of oil and raw materials. It won’t be a one-nation recession we will see. That is, Chinese policy makers have embarked into an unprecedented macroeconomic rebalancing process from export-led to consumption-led growth.
    The idea is future GDP growth be propelled by consumption of the largest middle class in the world. To be successful, a world class financial system must be created.
    The volatility and sharp downward adjustment of Shanghai stock market is the growing pains of modern financial capitalism in China.
    At this juncture, China’s political leadership must be cautious in attempting to address the stock market adjustment. The political command and control system — successfully applied to the productive sectors during the early stages of economic take off — is no longer valid to deal with a modern stock market. In other words, stock markets are well above politicians pay check grade anywhere in the world, including Beijing. The next global Financial Crisis may not necessarily be triggered by Wall Street. Asian’s emerging markets response has to start NOW. But how? We’ll just have to wait and see.

    You can see the “Concentrated” effort to “mute and prevention”of Alternatives news, oppositions which have “them cornered”

    That is why “they” come out with Fake News Law ( like trump )…and “trying hard to destroy WP” .

    The deep sea Port at Kuantan will continue again soon….

    When that happens…..Sinkapoe will definitely “Sink” !

    What was out our PM, trade minister and economy minister thinking last ten years? US is still our future Uncle Sam? The pro US stance such as the S China sea is really a grieve mistake, misjudgment by government which can be avoided. Even people on the ground know China is the future not US.
