What can PM Lee do to improve his terrible legacy before stepping down?

When Lee Hsien Loong steps down from office, he will leave behind his legacy.

People will remember him for the good and bad policies that he implemented during his years as the Prime Minister, and for many years earlier, as Deputy Prime Minister, and as Finance Minister.

I think most people will remember his bad policies, and his legacy will be negative.

There is one important change that he can introduce, before he steps down. This change will erase the bad policies and will put Singapore on a path of a brighter future.

What is this important change?

It is not abolishing GST, stopping the inflow of foreigners, returning CPF at age 55 and abolishing the GRC system. While each of these measures is important, it will not by itself have a significant impact.

In my view, the most important change is to allow the PAP to be split into two parties. He can ask his ministers and MPs to choose whether they wish to remain in the PAP or to move to an alternative party to be split from the PAP.

Without his blessing, the ministers and MPs will not make this move. They will not want to be seen to be disloyal or traitors and be involved in an acrimonious separation. There is too much at stake for them financially and socially.

With his blessing, two strong parties will formed from the from the original PAP. It will allow a genuine contest between these parties. Some of the non PAP politicians may wish to join either of the parties.

This will create a more vibrant political landscape. The genuine and democratic competition will produce better policies for Singapore.

The GRC system would probably be abolished together with the elected president. It could be replaced by an upper house.

If we continue without this change, the future for Singapore will be bleak. The existing policies of the PAP will be continued and will cause more harm to the country and the livelihood of the people.

Do not be misled into thinking that Singapore is now a prosperous country; it is not. We appear to be prosperous because of fictitious wealth created by an property bubble. The broader economy is high cost and uncompetitive.

If the PAP continues the existing policies, the economic and social conditions for most people will continue to get worse. One day, the PAP will be overthrown and will become totally irrelevant, like the Barisan Nasional in Malaysia. The future for Singapore will be most uncertain.

When I discuss this idea with a friend, he told me that there is a parallel in the development in Taiwan, during the time under Chiang Ching Kuo.

PM Lee has a choice. He can depart from the political scene with a bad legacy. Or he can make one important change that will create a better future for Singapore.

You may think PM Lee has bad legacy. But the vast majority of Singaporeans, and also the international community, believe PM Lee has done very well to turn Singapore into a truly globalized city where talented people and major corporations all want to be. While other places decline (New York because of Trump nationalism; London because of Brexit; HK because of China’s stronger hold over it; Tokyo because of declining population; Paris because lack of economic dynamism), Singapore just continues to get better and better. This is a fact. Your opinion counts for nothing.

As the usual singaporean who works hard and beleives in hard work, i beleived that my income will rise But over the last few years, My thinking has changed and prompted me to question the system. I have started wondering who the system is really made for? Many times , the politicans tell us that they work for us? are they working for us or are we workign for them?

why am i working so hard and paying taxes for when i am not able to retire or have minumum wages, social security or take a pay rise because some at the top including my bosses and politicians reap a huge chunk of the profits for themselves?

Is there someting wrong with the system when people who seemingly do not sweat earn a hugh saalry while doing nothing much , not even any effort to improve our live, but instead give excuses like Foreginers will take our lunch, there is more social spending needed to sustain aging population ect? WHose problems are they anyway? Why are these problems being pushed to ordinary people in the society when it is the job of the politicians to solve it? why are they paid in millions then?

And if you want to measure economic progress in the last 10 years since the GFC, how much have the market value the capitalisation of all listed entity on SGX – as compared to global markets? We are just crawling near dead caterpillar of progress in development whilst capital market valuations of listed equities from NY, London, Bonn, Hong Kong advanced by leaps and bounds.

  • Have confidence please:

What is the point of creating two teams splitted up from the same party.
They more or less share the same ideology and think in the same frame.
We need brave sincere politicians with progressive alternative ideas to improve the lives of the people.
Not the cosmetic fair-weather kind invited over coffee to fill the seats in parliament for expediency.
Serious and sincere genuine politicians with the heart to better the lot of the people are very very few.
It is a calling and you don’t get many in this category.
In the ruling group, many enter politics after being invited, it is a boosting of ego and self-importance, it is the monetary rewards, the opening of doors for career progression or for their own business, and to savour the sweet taste of authority and power and the star-like attention they get.
Of course many hope to become ministers especially with the generous package that goes with it.
The core group i.e. the few on the top controls and set the pace and they are the ones that want to keep and retain power at all costs hence their strategies and scare tactics to stay in power. They have tasted the luxury of being in power and they love it. Any challenger or opposition is a nuisance and they will find ways and means to destroy them. Power is a sort of addiction. The core group wields power and issues the command.
Those idealistic opposition politicians who have alternative well meaning views, and there are only a few diehards in this category, will obviously face a difficult time. Where the ruling clique is concerned, they are a troublesome lot, to be put down and likely made economically impotent, financially ruined, bankrupted.
Given this scenario, many are deterred from participating in pushing alternative politics.
Many do not want to sacrifice family life and privacy; and many could not take the spotlight glare of criticisms in public, hence give up half way.
So the real picture is the core team comprising of a few senior ones, run the show and having tasted and enjoy the sweetness of power as suits their temperament and personality, will fight tooth and nail to ensure power will not slip out of their hands. They want to keep their star status at all costs.
So the battles continues with a few dedicated individuals with unbending principles challenging the incumbents.
We hope and pray that only smart and intelligent people participate in our political arena and that they can confidently and efficiently takes over and run a government if they win the popular votes.
We boast and brag about being first world. Surely these are qualified well-intentioned people who could manage the affairs of this country when they get their turn.
In our case, it is doubtful if any opportunist or baboon can get pass us and get elected.

If truly a “fact”, why write much? why panic?

    - As for New York, at least Trump thinks citizen should come first.
    - Brexit is a true reflection of the will of the people – one man one vote
    - Hong Kong “decline” in the shadow of One Party Rule (sounds familiar?)
    - Tokyo with declining population still world top 5 economic powerhouse (no need FTs?)
    - Paris lack of dynamism… so?

I think it is best not to write anything if you have nothing to say TKL. Your idea, in my view, is simply rubbish. You don’t seem to have any conviction as to what is the right thing to do for the country.

Thinking back, it was fortuitous that you were not “elected” for President. Having said that, I also wonder at the cleanliness of those elections.

Whether it is possible to get elected or not in Singapore as an opposition member is not really the issue. The issue is that we need to be able to voice and support the opposition for their courage and their determination against all odds. You can’t win unless you try.

One can also signal to the rest of the world, that there is an alternative picture of Singapore that has been glossed over.

So citizens have a “choice” to commit hara-kiri of the country and themselves or strive for a better future. Just take a look at Venezuela. The country has a lot of oil yet it is bankrupt. Its citizens are moving to neighbouring countries as refugees. This will happen to Singapore, not this generation but maybe at the tail-end of the next generation. People will be seeking refugee status in neighbouring Johore. Some with foresight has already done so.

Nope, sorry. Even if the PAP was split it would just be a wayang. Just like how the PAP thinks the NCMP scheme is good enough to raise alternative views in parliament. If the NCMP scheme is as good as PAP says then why do they need so many useless MPs around when all they do is skip parliament?

If the PAP is split it would be like 2 parties agreeing on everything just like a single party. Therefore this suggestion by Mr Tan is moot sorry to say.

TAKE OUT THE MILLION CHEAPER FOREIGN LABOR and the asset bubble, LEE-jiapore vaporize to nothing. Your imprisoned CPF and inflated public housing wealth extraction pay for the infrastructure of sustaining this foreign influx.

IT IS INSTEAD CANCER METASTASIS. We locked up more and more CPF savings, escalate tax burden of even forward GST from mouth to anus, pile up all kinds of indirect taxes from utilities, healthcare fake subsidies, inflated BTOs public housing all to fund infrastructure needed to support the MARGINAL ECONOMIC BASE of a runaway population base which is truly uncompetitive and in that decadence an inflated self-destructive asset bubble (rent too high). It is like a pygmy experimenting with ever-escalation additions of weight in weighlifting – one day it will collapse on its over excess weight and kills the weighlifter.

After 5 decades of economic birth, WE ARE STILL TRAPPED IN THE FALLACY ECONOMICS OF INFRASTRUCTURE EXPLOSION relying on cheap foreign labor. Even China knows this won’t last inside China, OBOR is spreading to the rest of Asia and EU. Right now there are at least 50 million unoccupied apartments in China forget ghost cities and shopping centres.

  • Organized selfishness:

    It’s human nature!
    Vanity develops and took satisfaction.
Satisfaction, insatiable, in varying degrees, expanded.
    Self-righteousness was ignited and flattered.
Caution in consequence was abandoned at moments when the need was greatest.
    Wisdom too.
The result of the built up of self-centred arrogance.
Men who essayed to be chieftains of people fell into error basing their power and policies on cultivating fear, thus setting narrow boundaries to their exclusive leadership.
    A form of abuse.
It is a mistake into which most of the adherents of such narrow political philosophy in their eagerness to pretentiously avoid and resist the creeping cultivated selfishness of the hedonists, are liable to fall.
There will be a price to pay for such weaknesses that they subscribed to.
They will in the end perish by reason of want of genuine self discipline and because they had left the devices of human nature out of account and to get the better of them and finally overwhelm them.
The exercise of reason was unfortunately tempered by their version and belief of “ virtue” and “right action”.
Such had turned the doctrine of the rights and values of man into their perceived self-righteous “organized selfishness”.
They failed to see the degeneration of ideals and discipline.
They falsely believe that man must be reminded and taught good behaviour only according to their yardstick.
They failed to see the true basis of Reason and Self-worth that embodies two different and distinct ideas, namely, that human nature granted a modicum of knowledge, is essentially good, but the build-up of greed could pull them in different directions.
Such forgetfulness, in the government of men, leads to disaster.
    They have to re-examine themselves.
