Who is the best PAP leader is not necessarily the best leader for Singapore

I was asked below by a commentator who I thought should be the next PM.

Without naming names, I have this to say: who is best for the PAP, may not be the best for Singapore. Who may be best for Singapore, may not be the best for the PAP.

Who is the best for the PAP?

We are inevitably entering the era of contested politics and the PAP must expect to get challenged more and more. The era of colourless but competent technocrats sailing through elections unchallenged must surely be over.

Candidates have to win elections and for better or for worse, we only need to look at other developed countries to see what sort of leader wins elections: charismatic, eloquent, and able to connect with the people.

In Canada you have Trudeau who put all his modern political skills to display in Singapore recently. We also have the young telegenic female PM of New Zealand, President Macron in France etc etc.

They may not be the best technocrats, may not have the best policy brain, and may not even be the most well-liked amongst their peers.

But they are all leaders who brought electoral success to their parties because of their ability to win votes – they are likeable.

Who is best for Singapore ?

On the hand, even as Singapore is now over 50 years old, we are still a young state. The technocratic and steady leadership that has served us well for the last half-century would continue to serve us well.

One doesn’t need to be able to take good selfies, or wear colourful costumes, or have a telegenic smile to be able to formulate the best policies to see us through the next decade. But one needs the respect and support of his peers and the civil service to be able to execute these policies well.

These two qualities might not be found in the same person – they rarely do. We now need both politicians and technocrats for Singapore to be led well. If the PAP can’t survive as a political party (win elections), they cannot formulate or implement the policies that benefit Singapore.

This is the conundrum the 4G now faces. We all hope they will choose wisely.

  • LIONS:

Ya,ya,the BEST LEADER FOR SG IS OUTSIDE OF PAP.
WHO WINS VOTES MAY NOT BE THE BEST LEADER FOR SG AS GRC IS UNFAIR PRACTICE ensuring only MEDIOCRE ARI$TOCRAP$ get seats in parLEEment.

So who win votes by foul means are not good leaders for SGS as is the case here.

RE: “If the PAP can’t survive as a political party (win elections), they cannot formulate or implement the policies that benefit Singapore.”

But if they win the elections like they have many times, much of their policies presently are questionable with respect to their socioeconomic benefits for commoners in elitist Singapore.

“who is best for the PAP, may not be the best for Singapore. Who may be best for Singapore, may not be the best for the PAP.”

And, who is best for the PAP, is also the best for the Lee Dynasty. Who may be best for SG, is definitely not the best for the Lee Dynasty.

It’s up to voters to decide. Do we want to see history repeats itself with another Yes-Man seat warmer reserving the seat for another descendant of the LeeFamily? Or do we want what is best for SG by voting out the party which thinks it’s undefeatable?

  • To Calvin Cheng:

Arent you saying the obvious? Sorry, obvious to maybe 30% of the population.
How much more people can this little island of 710 sq km house? Build upward, downward, reclaim land, drink newater, ship in polar ice?
We import foreigners to grow the eonomy.
Only a small percent of the population, the rich will have the means to migrate or live elsewhere if the conditions get unbearable.
The rest, maybe 15 million in 2065, will have no choice but to stay put, even the neighbouring countries will not want them.
By then, PAP elite and their cronies have already accumulated enough wealth to live anywhere in the world, do you think they still care other than their own pockets?
Singapore will become a police state, with cctv, robots, smart chips things we use to monitor and control us, in the name of national security and defence.

  • Play cheat politics:

    PAPs dont trust the people.
That why they just ‘play cheat’ by parachuting their own kaki lang in.
Nowdays the people oso dont trust them ,after getting ‘played out’ many a time.
I feel we’re in for a few surprises or shockers in the coming GE, being played out by PAP in order to win win and win!

  • Dear Calvin:

Do you think PAP will rule Singapore forever, or Singapore can only have one dominant political party that PAP and the not-in-line-potential-PM Ong have brain-washed you?
PAP may concede Singapore sovereignty to maybe US or China (minority will create hell) or Malaysia or Indonesia just like PAP sold NOL, Chartered Semi-Conductor when they could not find a solution for the companies they created.
Maybe you are lucky not to live long enough to see that happen, else you would feel really betrayed.

The problem isn’t about capable leadership nor about a beauty (& personality) contest to win elections. Calvin Cheng being a “brown-noser” can’t see the forest for the trees despite coming up for air after a long time brown-nosing the powers-to-be’s a**es (& then subsequently realising it was all-for-nothing)!
S’pore is staring at the abyss because 50 years of PAP Autocratic rule have left masses of S’poreans helpless & clueless about the future. We’re staring at literal genocide in the future without any hope of salvaging from what would be a sunken wreck as S’pore heads towards economic irrelevance & potential financial disaster.
S’pore isn’t a “young state” by Calvin Cheng’s reckoning but a growingly old nation. The nation’s energy is gone (Merdeka Generation already reached retirement age & beyond). I had pointed out it was the Merdeka Generation that had caught the upwave of Industrialisation & scrimped/saved much of S’pore’s accumulated capital & wealth. Fellow TRE commenter oxygen picked it up & remarked that it would be a one-time phenomenon! The Merdeka Generation who carried the Pioneer Generation on their backs & provided much of the means for Consumption for the Subsequent Generations.
But subsequent Generations will not enjoy the Prosperity wave that the Merdeka Generation had in their lifetime. The future would be much bleaker going forward. The PAP inserted themselves into the Prosperity Equation & took immense credit for what that is totally the Merdeka Generation’s achievements (ie. hard-working & sacrifice).
Ask yourself these questions – how has PAP’s policies benefitted the people? Have they fulfil people’s aspirations or just their own?
The answers to these questions are obvious!

WHICH HE MAY HAVE IMPLIED……NO NEED THE RESPECT FROM THE PEOPLE….. COMMAND AND DEMAND AND INFLICT MORE FEARS… CREATE MORE LAWS TO CURB AND CONTROL THEM…

  • Malaysia boleh Singapore bodoh:

Clavin Cheng is presumptuous. He assumes that PAP is the best party for Singapore. This is a big (stupid) assumption. Singaporeans have become worse off over the last 2 decades. It is time for regime change. So the best leader for Singapore cannot be from PAP because the latter is no longer good for Singapore (and Singaporeans). Time to bury it with LKY and move on.

HSK seem like a civil servant without the LKY ambition to want to be the Leader aka pm.
He seem like an obedient civil servant who will do what he is asked to do.

This is not what I would regard as Political Leader. He is not a true politician. To me he is merely an employee.

    SG has zero LKY left.
The future is going to be funny.

Even LHL is not a LKY.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST, IF THE PM IS NOT CCS, then the grandson of old man is not Gay.

Democracy = People Power And Gov
    SG democracy = 0 x Gov

Kia Si means no People Power.
I extrapolate this to that they will surrender when enemy threaten to kill us.

People Power is NOT OFFICIALLY GIVEN TO A BODY, A SINGLE PHYSICAL ENTITY. THERE IS NO OFFICE called the People.

So-called people representatives a bound by their party whip which means party first.

    That’s the question.
I remind Singaporeans that the PM is not selected by the people.
Even the pap has revealed before that the pm is always the person the pap selected.
I would think he is selected by the pm.
The whip dictates that the rest dare not challenge or go against this decision.
