PAP has no sense of accountability with budget overruns?

I read with much pride and joy that the new Seletar Airport passenger terminal is completed and will open in December to cater for more business and private jet traffic to grow. I welcome it but am also concerned about one issue.

I recall a Straits Times report in 2016 quoted the cost of the new passenger terminal as S$50 million. (I was unable to find the 2016 ST report and hence, I stand to be corrected). If there is a cost overrun of S$30 million (or 60%), then the PAP government shouldn’t again just keep mums about it but explain clearly to the people why that was so.

This is the true spirit of an English word called “accountability”. Cost overruns can be acceptable but it shouldn’t happen as a matter of habit and be kept silence away, just like the MRT downtown line construction cost-overruns or the hosting of the Youth Olympics and busting the budget, etc. After all, any amount spent over the budget were our citizens’ collective precious tax monies.

This leads me to another airport terminal, our previous Budget Terminal.

The budget terminal went into operation in 2006 and was closed and subsequently demolished in 2012, meaning to say that it was operating for a short span of 6 years only. The construction cost was quoted as S$45 million. It was an obvious miscalculation and a wrong decision to build the budget terminal and the PAP government again didn’t bother to explain to Singaporeans that fiasco.

When spending tax monies, it must understand by heart the true meaning of fiduciary duties that it owes each and every citizen. I hope that they have learned enough about the budget terminal mistake to increase the success rate of Seletar Airport passenger terminal.

For Terminal 5 and the construction of a 3rd runway, no budget numbers have been made public yet. It will run into the billions of dollars and it is my wish that this PAP government understands and remembers by heart that our citizens didn’t give them a blank cheque.

It is forever tempting and dangerous even whenever the means justify the ends.

  • Singapore Fooled Again n Again:

How about the newest and still expensive Terminal 4? I heard that some airlines already boycotted it before using it as it cannot cater to certain bigger built air planes

T5 will cost yew daft serfs TENS of billions, not mere billions, just you watch. There’s gonna be all sorts of ‘consultancy work’ commissions involved, remember?

Including not least, of course, THAT most important ‘final retirement fund’ (that’s already in place since it got kickstarted from the PRC-will-get-the-contract-for-sure HSR project; Najib-Rosmah, remind yourselves, thank yew) for in the real possible event the First Family gets booted out for good in 2019, which is gonna take up a thick chunk of the to-be-proposed ‘cost’ (some details of which will be available to the pubfleeced post-election, while having the more ones hidden/missing or absorbed as “miscellaneous”, no doubt due to “unforeseen” circumstances or “unknown unknowns”, in the words of a certain Secretary Rumsfeld).

We all know why Penang Boy was getting hot & flustered when his homeland PM first announced cancelation post-GE14 victory, don’t we now? His other political master – and his missus – kept cumming down hard on him to balik kampung and cum back with a firm/firmer/confirmed deal!

  • Image & Accountability:

A rich man showed Nasruddin Hodja the coffin he had got made for himself.

He wanted Hodja to admire the quality of the wood.

“What do you think of the carvings on the sides?” he asked Hodja. “Aren’t they superb?”

    Hodja nodded his head appreciatively.

“I insisted the insides be lined with felt – the best kind of felt of course!” the man boasted.

    “Certainly,” agreed Hodja.

“I wanted nothing mediocre,” the man went on. “Have I missed anything here?”

“Yes,” replied Hodja, “the resplendent occupant.”

  • opposition dude:

Sorry Simon Lim but no can do. The PAP is too used to spending taxpayer money any which way they like without the need to explain anything. After all, they have been doing so since the 60s when HDB flats were built along with the roads, schools and all other infrastructure.

Since the PAP will never reveal the cost of building BTOs why would they ever explaining why this or that project had an overrun?

Oh,they are not building these airports to cater to more passing traffic;they probably could see less business goung forward.

They are just building *ESCAPE ROUTES* so they all fly off at the same time when things get sour.

Kee Chiu as FUTURE PM is simply a joke, not just to ordinary sgs n elites themselves but to outsiders watching our childish self-serving politics.

Kee Chiu better be humble n know his own limitations.
Lee Ah Long better dont screw this nation by placing his stooges in critical positions.
As for Oppo, many sgs are still awaiting their Alliance.

“… remembers by heart that our citizens didn’t give them a blank cheque”.

@Simon, in GE2015, 70% already given the PAP this blank cheque!

Hopefully, this same 70% could wake up in the next GE!! Otherwise, the blank cheque might not be enough and they would ask for more!!
