Veteran blogger Leong Sze Hian kenna ‘Davindered’

Mr Leong Sze Hian

Veteran blogger Leong Sze Hian has received a Letter of Demand from PM Lee Hsien Loong, accusing Leong of libel for an article which was shared on his Facebook page.

Leong had, on 8th November, shared an article originally by now-defunct States Times Review (STR) which alleged, inter alia, that former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak had signed “secret deals” with PM Lee to launder money through Singaporean banks.

The article “Lee Hsien Loong becomes 1MDB’s key investigation target” aka “Breaking News: Singapore Lee Hsien Loong becomes 1MDB’s key investigation target” was subsequently removed on 10th November after a warning letter was served on Leong by the Info-communications Media Development Authority (IMDA) earlier in the same day – to take down the Facebook share within 6 hours, saying that the content is against the Internet Code of Conduct.

Two days later on 12th November, Leong was served with a Letter of Demand by Senior Counsel Davinder Singh of Drew & Napier, who is representing PM Lee.

According to SC Davinder, Leong had clearly published the post maliciously to damage PM Lee’s reputation, and had “disparage and impugn his character, credit and integrity.”

PM Lee is reportedly demanding that Leong issues a public apology and make monetary compensation.

Responding to media queries, Ms Chang Li Lin, the press secretary to the Prime Minister, confirmed that PM Lee had commenced legal proceedings against Leong for defamation, and said that the matter is in the hands of PM Lee’s lawyers.

“Mr Lee reserves the right to take legal action against other parties who similarly defame him,” she added.

Leong has been a vocal critics of some of the government’s policies with thousands of articles appearing on numerous alternative websites.

Black November or Pre-GE shakedown?

November has indeed been a very unlucky month for bloggers and alternative websites.

Within a short period of one month:

  • Alternative media The Independent SG (TISG) was also Davindered by NTUC Foodfare.
  • Maruah’s President Leong Sze Hian was threatened with lawsuits by both Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) and PM Lee Hsien Loong.
  • Chief editor of The Online Citizen (TOC) and writer “Willy Sum” had their homes ransacked and electronic equipment seized by the police for an alleged offense of “criminal defamation” after IMDA lodged a police report.
  • States Times Review, a website operated by self-exiled Alex Tan was forced to shut down after IMDA lodged a police report.

Could it be simply unlucky Black November or maybe a Pre-GE shakedown.

What do you think?

I have been wondering for some time as to when the PAP will take action against Uncle Leong. So it has finally arrived. The whole exercise is to silence critics that the PAP does not have a response to their criticisms.

My feeling was so long as he sticks to statistics he is safe but as soon as he ventured outside of that field than he is vulnerable. It is a sign that the PAP is feeling insecure that they have to resort to suing their own citizens to frighten the population.

There was an interview published by Time Magazine with the owner of Sarawak Report who indicated that more areas of the 1MDB scandal have yet to surface from Singapore and Hong Kong. Go and read that article and you can see why.

Must be targeting these two bloggers (Roy & Leong) for very long. Instead of taking the tedious steps to counter them with facts, they rather kept their silence, laid behind the bushes observed the meat and waited for the opportunity to pound on them with one big bite to silent them forever. A very calculated & cunny wild animal move. Speak volumes about such kind always smiling but with many hidden daggers ready to throw once you are off guard. In Chinese culture, they are called ‘small’ people.

Demoncracy & freedom of speech do exist here but is reserved for one privilaged group. They can say & do whatever they want but not others. The inconsistency for suing everyones but not kalilangs is good reason for a regime change.

Writer forgot one more man, Sunday Times political Editor Han Fook, he disappeared from SPH MSM also. Govt dun like his 2 cents worth of comments on Govt policies, which are too contrary.
Shows PAP jittery about coming polls, have to clamp down on alternative media, looking at Malaysian polls where social media brought down UMNO.

Ready to donate if uncle Leong asks for it, his articles asking questions have been very insightful to me over the years particularly his asking of the breakdown of citizens against PRs when it comes to the jobless rate.

  • their own limited resources:

//I didn’t expect uncle Leong to kena but he wasn’t careful enough this time.//

how to be careful ? white idiots have been drawing (the privilege) to draw wayang lines that one will inevitably (so-called not careful) crosses it (can be subjective interpretation). It very much depends when / how the white idiots want to enforce / apply their wayang lines which can be selective and unfortunately those outside the white gang have to ‘defend’ it with their own limited resources (assuming lesser limited resources than the white monkey idiots) lor.

the white idiots have the so-called ‘reserving the right’ (chim legal lingua) to say that another is wrong over certain matter / statement; and from the point on, one has to defend it lor.

Case 1 (Not involving SG) – It would be interesting to find out who gave the order to entry block Editor of Sarawak Report. What motivates them to block her? Must be something big!

Case 2 (Directly involving SG) – And since FB did not cooperate to follow their filtering request, why don’t entry block Zarks also? They like to teach people lessons once you don’t yield to their requests. But not this time. Why? Ang Mo tua kee is it?

    Is Case 1 more serious?

  • Keep On Suing Please:

The more citizens Pinky sued in court, the more citizens will become dissenters and side with the Opposition. He doesn’t understand the Singaporean’s mentality.

How many can he sue ? 3000, 6000 or 10000 or 100000 ? How many people can he jailed ? 10000, 100000 or one million ? He will be kept very busy everyday.

You cannot frightened the people so easily. He can only shoot his own feet which he had done so on many occasions. Perhaps Old Man had made a mistake in promoting him as Leader.
