We need an open mind to address the challenges

China is now promoting globalization. But critics complained that many industries in China are still protected or are receiving government subsidies.

Rather than complain about China, the other countries can also adopt the same approach, (i.e. to protect some of their industries through tariffs and other measures).

The tariffs should be non-discriminatory, i.e. they should be applied to all countries. The intent is to protect the local industry and allow it to grow.

The tariffs increase the cost to consumers. There is nothing wrong with this approach. Consumption and sales tax, such as GST, also increase cost to consumers.

The higher cost to consumers caused by tariffs brings revenue to the government. The government needs revenue to provide social welfare for low income people and to provide essential services, such as health care, education and infrastructure to the people.

Some economists argue that tariffs allow the local manufacturers to make excessive profits. They cannot make the excessive profits because the country could raise the wages of workers and improve the working conditions. This will give better income to the workers, which will be good for the long term development of the country.

If the local businesses, through tariff protections, make more profit (and after paying more to the workers), the govt can take a share of their profit through taxation.

Under the current globalized system, it is difficult to get corporations to pay their share of tax because they can shift their profits to tax havens.

I am in favor of protectionism and tariffs as a way to put the global economy into a more sustainable path. It will help to improve wages and reduce inequality around the world.

Small countries, such as Singapore, will be adversely affected by a more protectionist world. We can find our niche in the new environment. As a small and well educated country, we should be able to make the adjustment. We must.

With protectionism, there will still be ample opportunity for world trade. Not every country wants to produce all of the products and services that they need. They would prefer to buy many of the products from other countries.

World trade will continue, but will be at a lower scale than now.

We need an open mind to address the challenges of the global economy and to reduce the gross inequality that exists in many countries, which is likely to cause more social unrests.

    Dear Mr. Tan KL,

With all due respect to your decades of so-called tripartite labor policy experiences under NTUC, I still think your idea above is the stupidest idea I have heard in a long while.

I can write a long economic thesis on why protectionist policies won’t work for us, but I will keep it short and not bore our readers here.

Its really straightforward: Our market size is too small.

Only BIG countries with large internal markets, such as USA / China / India / Indonesia etc. can afford such protectionist maneuvers.

That is why China & USA are now playing such games over tariffs. Even if they hit each other with tit-for-tat, their internal market size can absorb the shocks somewhat since they both have sufficient market capacity for production and consumption.

As for our tiny island nation tossed about the roiling global economic waves, what market advantage do you have to impose tariffs on? Hahaha.

aiyoh. market size small but can go for 6.9m or 10m lor. so if we can keep on increasing to 15m or 20m, then can be more protectionist lor.

aiyoh. recently there was news about some unfortunate happening in an island called Sentinel Island located in the Bay of Bengal. Small market (or no market at all ?) and the people very protectionist (they, the people aka as Sentinelese, still shoot arrows to indicate their protectionism). you know why ? they do not need to be open and they make the right choice.

if they are too open, their island and live styles will be ‘corrupted’ and most probably will fall in the hands of entrepreneurs who are somehow born with the flair of capitalizing / exploiting what open free market can afford them that to do e.g by building resorts, etc, etc, etc. Well different people are born to master different skills better right.

market size too small ? no problem, can still increase water by 30%, tpt and electricity and impending increase gst lor.

Meng is not your dumb cousin Ah Lian. She is Huawei’s CFO, the “kidnappers” have tracked her travel itinary across continents for. And worst, they know who she is and detained her even in the transit flight change over. It is a real world “cloak-and-dagger” spy-thriller kidnapping of hostage taking for ransom.

And worst your basis of incriminating someone’s imagined offence is by hearsay gossips – as thrashy as this nonsense – some say she is canadian citizen some say she US citizenship. Your imagined offence lies not in evidence but gossip.

So if someone says you are a pimp, your crime is pimping?

    You stupid enough or not?

If Meng is Canadian or US citizenship, how is that relevant when you said in the first proposition that identity is “no problem”

YOUR CLOSING PROPOSITION CONTRADICTED YOUR FIRST PROPOSITION. Imagine you tell the judge this, he will tell you that you are too stupid to even begin to discover you are stupid to impossibility.

RIGHT ON, MATE. Different country has different law standards – even Canada differs from US. Here is my proof.

Conrad Black: Why should Canada extradite anyone to a prosecutocracy?

and even these exception of your notation DOES NOT WORK.

Bbc: I must add with some generally accepted exceptions like terrorism, murders

US citizen/journalist, Khashoggi was murdered inside the Saudi Consulate in Ankara, Turkey. An American citizen murdered on land/property NOT belonging to Turkish government. So Trump can’t force Turkey or Saudi Arabia to extradite the killers without an extradition treaty in force between US and Saudi Arabia or US and Turkey. Trump didn’t open his mouth to demand vocally and publicly that he wants the killers of Khashoggi to be brought to justice on US soil. He almost kissed the butt of the Saudi ruler!

US want badly the life of Julian Assange – and Britain is abetting of the same, BUT NEITHER BRITAIN NOR USA can send law enforcement or military to extract Assange from the Ecuadorian embassy in London. It is foreign soil and foreign property – just like the transit lounge in Vancouver Airport is NOT Canadian land/sovereignty.

Meng should not have been kidnapped from there. Canada crossed the red line helping Trump to set a precedent the whole world will regret. International business now equals to kidnapping of hostage taking for ransom bargaining with the abetment/connivance of Trump, USA and Canada.

Few people outside mining industry knows this – most of the easily discovered mineral deposits in USA/Canada and Australia have already mined out. Some significant discoveries in Canada cannot be mined because of environmental issues. Over the last 15 years, the bigger and biggest mineral deposits are found in Africa, Latin America, and politically unstable regions like Indonesia etc etc. Imagine these desperate poor third world countries/banana republic kidnapped US/Canadian/Australian mining entrepreneurs/geologists/CEO as ransom hostage in exchange for mines, killing them if no compliance is met.

We will run out of raw material for all housing and transportation.

HERE IS SOME OF MY ILLUMINATIONS to refute some of the naysayers of your reasonable assertions.

oxygen: Some significant discoveries in Canada cannot be mined because of environmental issues.

Read this weblink on the gigantic porphry gold copper project in Alaska in frozen suspension bogged down by legal fight for development licence rights.

    and this

oxygen: Imagine these desperate poor third world countries/banana republic kidnapped US/Canadian/Australian mining entrepreneurs/geologists/CEO as ransom hostage in exchange for mines, killing them if no compliance is met.

Read this real world example of a Canadian mining CEO arrested in Kyrgyzstan.

    https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/canadian-ceo-arrested-at-request-of-kyrgyz-government-1.3180439

He was not the only one. Same happened in Georgia (Bolnisi Gold), Russia (Star Mining).

Imagine if this kidnapping of hostage for ransom demand is routine, habitual means of conflict resolution in wealth distribution dispute between sovereign and mining investors, it won’t be long before we will be short of metals for industrial machinery manufacture and steel/industrial metals for housing, transportation and utilities plants construction.

    The world economy will collapse.

//So China could respond in kind if necessary and no one should whine about it.//

should or should not ? if CHN could (power, power, power) without undue consequences lar ? aiyoh, that is up to CHN to decide and bet lar.

you only whine if your own interest (or idea of how matter should turn out) is affected badly lar or start to act if the pain is too unbearable lar (all about tolerance level and how much you want to bet lar) ? Results and counter-response is quite unpredictable after that lar. But the yellow mop (maybe cannot be bothered about having another term ?) is used to upping the ante each time leh.

sinkies can also whine or not whine depending on how much the ‘fire’ starts to spread to sinkie land lar (how it affects each individual sinkie differently lar).
