Summing up 2018: How one man’s comeback stole the thunder and what Mahathir and the PAP have in common

It is said that Dr Mahathir Mohamad lives up to the idiom that a leopard never changes its spots but he’s in good company because the exact same thing can be said of the People’s Action Party so in the end it does not matter whether it’s 3G or 4G leadership, whether it’s Heng Swee Keat or Chan Chun Sing for Prime Minister because it’s still ownself check ownself, then ownself clear ownself, the opposition still gets “fixed” and critics like Thum Ping Tjin, Terry Xu and Leong Sze Hian get condemned, charged and sued respectively which only serves to remind us that post-LKY nothing has changed, for in Parliament Sylvia Lim got hounded mercilessly and was branded “not honourable” for suggesting that the government floated “test balloons” on the GST hike when in fact labour movement NTUC did indeed float “test balloons” through a survey to gather feedback on taxes, but the most spectacular own goal of the year was scored by Goh Chok Tong who ignited public outcry and debate about the obscene pay of crazy rich politicians, rubbing salt on the wounds of Singaporeans reeling from rising cost of living and the horror that their HDB flats could dwindle down to zero value because this was the year the HDB story came undone only for the government to buy time with a desperate last-gasp promise to revive the value of old flats in 20 years’ time, and distract by drumming up national pride about the hosting of a Trump-Kim summit that promised the skies but delivered nothing except for handshakes and cringeworthy selfies for ministers with dictator Kim, while a massive wake-up call came in the form of the SingHealth cyber attack that targeted the Prime Minister but the blockbuster of the year has got to be the Malaysian tsunami and astonishing comeback of Mahathir which sent shockwaves to the Singapore leadership and the man in the street, upended the Loong-Najib bromance and renewed old tensions and hostilities leading up to Malaysian vessels being encamped on Singapore waters as we usher in the new year and that just about sums up 2018 through the lens of a Singaporean in one 365-word sentence.

    Whatever will be will be
The future’s not ours to see
    Que sera sera

What is fame? What is fortune? What is power? What is pride?
    They are all illusions.

We only have a short life to live and after that the judgement.

Bro, I better than you. No need wait. It will be neighbours fighting each other, motorist road rages/parking lots squabbles, shoppers quarrelling/fighting, hawker centres brawls, Queues-cutting disputes/arguments, mass unemployment, mortgages meltdowns, bankruptcy from debts, increase in scams/cheatings, two foreign assets still in our waters, food shortages/price inflation, pedestrians/passengers glaring at you……you can add on the list.
Happy New Year 2019 to the 70% indeed!

Great effort at summing up 2018 in a single sentence that
comprises just 365 words, the same total as the number of
days in a year. Well done Augustine!

  • A Natural Aristocrat prays:

[While General Douglas MacArthur was stationed in Australia and acting as Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in the Southwest Pacific Area, he penned this prayer for his only son, Arthur.]

“Build me a son, O Lord, who will be strong enough to know when he is weak and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid; one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat, and humble and gentle in victory.

Build me a son whose wishes will not take the place of deeds; a son who will know Thee – and that to know himself is the foundation stone of knowledge.

Lead him, I pray, not be in the path of ease and comfort, but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenges. Here let him learn to stand up in the storm; here let him learn compassion for those who fail.

Build me a son whose heart will be clear, whose goal will be high; a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men; one who will reach into the future, yet never forget the past.

And after all these things are his, add, I pray, enough of a sense of humor, so that he may always be serious, yet never take himself too seriously. Give him humility, so that he may always remember the simplicity of true greatness, the open mind of true wisdom, and the weakness of true strength.

Then I, his father will dare to whisper: “I have not lived in vain.”

I also predicted there would be more difficulties for us (citizens) in SG comes the end of 2019 at the rate the situations in our country is going. Of course, I want our citizens to have good health and money to spend. We are named as one of the richest countries, but it applies only to those elites collecting $$millions in their salaries. U know who,eh ?

Bro some of what you have said has already happened before. What I would like to see are unexpected events, something like Dr Tan Cheng Bock and Lee Hsien Yang forming a party and having massive support plus the miracle of winning half the seats in parliament. Now, wouldn’t that just be earth shattering?

I expect more of PAP’s incompetence to show up and I would not find another NS death surprising if it happened. And who knows, perhaps another one of the newest MRT trains running on the NSEWL kena another langga?

12 months for events to transpire. If the GE is this year we might get more opposition into parliament and that would be the news event of the year for me.

Imagine PAP losing 3 or more GRCs and a few more overpaid ministers kicked out. Yes please!

Not enough to change a Govt. We need more economic poverty/hardships to knock up the daft 70%. Then can only below wish materialize.
