Absurd for ‘ang pows’ given at funerals to be construed as corruption

I refer to the news about CPIB’s investigations into crematorium workers and workers from private funeral businesses (PFB) receiving “angpows” from bereaved families and funeral directors.

While I applaud and strongly support our country’s zero tolerance stance on corruption, we must have that bit of discernment to differentiate between giving of “angpows” in the context of a funeral service and corruption in the sense of the word.

After all, we are human beings with feelings.

If crematorium workers or PFB workers were to hint or ask outright for “anypows” from the bereaved families for more efficient service or some other benefit, that cannot be acceptable. But if the bereaved families were to give “angpows” on their own as a token of their appreciation, then there is really no reasons why accepting it could be construed as corrupt practices.

To have a family member pass away is a huge emotional drain and sadness to many families. For them to want to show gratitude in a small but real and meaningful ways to PFB workers and crematorium workers who help with the funeral arrangements of their departed loved ones is totally understandable.

To clear any doubts, I would like to suggest 3 things that the relevant authorities could and should do.

One, embark on campaigns to educate the public that giving of “angpows” voluntarily by the bereaved families to funeral workers is totally acceptable but not compulsory. Next, make sure that crematorium workers and PFB workers understand that hinting for “angpows” is an offence punishable by laws. Lastly, all “angpows” collected must be made known and shared equally among those workers involved.

I sincerely hope that those book-smart PAP government leaders understand enough that workers do not earn a lot. And to deprive them of an income source is just so stupid and quite unnecessary. They are, after all, also working to support and feed their families and they definitely do not earn one or two million dollars annually like those PAP Ministers do.

  • Same as Prostitutes:

How can giving angpows to funeral parlour workers be construed as corruption? Are the scholar miniSTIRs trying to score an A for anti corruption?

Like prostitution in Sinkiland is permitted, for yellow card holders. However, offence to solicit…….thin line but law says cannot?

So funeral parlour workers……..don’t solicit………is it then a problem with the miniSTIRs? Cock!

  • In agreement:

Yes, I am in agreement on the suggestion.
Likewise to HDB cleaners, I have also likewise took the CNY season as opportunity to express my appreciation and thanks for their services. Afterall they dont earn much. But it is not acceptable for cleaners to go house to house to collect ang pows. We know who is giving us services and give due recognition to those serving the area. Likewise cleaners at hawker center and those selling tissue papers also a small token to make their day. All given should be voluntarily.

    @ Simon Lim

IT IS FIACKING RIDICULOUS to have sanctioned those crematorium workers for maybe reluctantly accepting those token angpows. ABSOLUTELY FIACKING RIDICULOUS of annoyance to good taste and compassion. And there are even sub-human specie in society adding to officialdom condemnation of the alleged wrongdoing of these lowly-paid workers, asserting that nobody forced them to take up these roles to be working on public holidays. The giving grief-stricken families of the departed in mourning of deep private pain can be generous of spirits and souls SPEAKS VOLUME, it is utterly abhorrent of any other to denounce. The receiving has no criminal intent to corrupt; they expect nothing beyond role demands and repays nothing of gratuitous promise or efforts either now or future of return payback to givers. SUCH IS THE EMPTINESS OF LAW OFFENCE alleged level against them.

UTTERLY HYPOCRITICAL OF SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS of those in power and authority inviting public contempt.

POLITICAL FARTS have been and still is giving ang pows only to their own constituents. Are these altrustic welfare for peasants or vote seduction lolly baiting of bribe i.e. corruption of intent of giver? Peasants can figure out for themselves. I AM F*CKING confused.

Or is that the devil of Briginshaw law at work again – i.e. it is NOT offence if committed by those of ‘RIGHT PEDIGREE’(JUST LIKE RIGHT NEWS vs “fake” news contrast) but if undertaken by peasants, the prosecution comes FAST AND BRUTAL?

AGAIN, PEASANTS CAN DECIDE ON THIS THEMSELVES!!

So it’s Ok for the corrupt PAPIGS using tax payers money to buy votes, and it’s not Ok to appreciate service given out by others.
