NEA owes a duty to Punggol residents to clarify impact of living near Pasir Gudang

Pasir Gudang petrochemical complex

I have given repeated feedback to REACH about Punggol housing estate which is just a few kilometres away from the sprawling Pasir Gudang petrochemical complex. Long term exposure to the fumes will no doubt raise concerns about the possibility of ill-health.

But until now, the National Environment Agency couldn’t be bothered to merely acknowledge, let alone reply. I wonder why it is so difficult for NEA to reply to my feedback.

If there is absolutely no problem or health hazards whatsoever staying near to Pasir Gudang petrochemical complex, why can’t NEA comes out strongly and loudly to assure all residents staying over at the part of Singapore once and for all?

If there is potential human health hazards over the long term exposure or staying near to petrochemical complex, the PAP government and NEA all the more owe them a duty to alert them early and in the meantime, take all necessary precautions to mitigate the risks. Anything less would be most irresponsible of any government for whatever reasons.

Residents paid very high prices for their flats there and their concerns are valid concerns. Their worries deserve to be addressed and answered and NEA shouldn’t just continue to keep quiet about it.

The importance of our citizens’ health cannot be understated, for the little ones, the seniors and everybody else. I hope that NEA would at least bother to reply clearly and convincingly, clear up all concerns and worries and put everybody’s minds, especially people who stay in Punggol and around there, at ease.

I’ve always advised friends and relatives not to live in Punggol because of its proximity to the petrol chemical complex in Johore. It is actually very close, separated by only a small strip of seawater. None of our HDBs are so near any similar plants in Singapore. The air in Punggol is toxic for at least 50% of the time.

IF WE GO THE NUCLEAR ROUTE, the nuke plant must be either build on Serangoon island or Pulau Ubin or Pedra Branca – definitely not near Sentosa meant for aristocrats.

That could change everything. Petrochemical emission would be nothing of significance in contrast.

BUT IS THAT WHY OFFICIALDOM IS COMPLETELY SILENT ON ENVIRONMENTAL RISKS HAZARDS FOR PUNGGOL RESIDENTS in case all “Ah Sengs” wake up and vote oppies in anger?

What HDB didn’t tell you about Punggol (and Pasir Gudang)

With Singaporeans oversubscribing the Punggol HDB projects BTO sales launch, it would seem that the two main concerns about living in the North-eastern tip of Singapore — namely the bad traffic conditions to the CBD and the air pollution from Pasir Gudang petrochemical complex across the Straits of Johor — have been put aside. In this article, we take an in-depth look at Pasir Gudang, to find out what we haven’t been told about the petrochemical hub.

For those who don’t know yet, Pasir Gudang is an industrial district in Johor, Malaysia with a large concentration of petrochemical industries such as refineries (similar to Singapore’s Jurong Island). The zone dedicated to heavy industries is about 20 square kilometres (sq km) in current size, larger than the areas of Punggol and Sengkang combined (16.5 sq km).

Using Google Maps, we ascertained the distance between the Punggol Point Cove and Punggol Point Woods BTO projects to be about 2.5 to 3km from Pasir Gudang factories closest to the Malaysian shore. Previous BTO projects such as Northshore Cove) are situated even nearer to Pasir Gudang’s petrochemical plants. Johor Port, where hazardous petrochemical products are shipped to and from Pasir Gudang, is located directly opposite Punggol Point Jetty (the tip of Punggol) and just over 1km away.

    @ John Grosse,

We are talking about risks exposure, not actual occasioning of event happening and fatalities.

If it is merely doomsday prediction that are unfalsifiable hypothesis, you can’t explain to all why -

    - Germany, Switzerland and some EU countries have turned their backs of nuclear energy

    - Japan shut down all its nuclear power plants post Fukushima disaster and how many are now restored to operational energy production.

    - uranium, the fuel source of nuclear power energy, prior to Fukushima happening, was in short supply and price rocketed up but now not a lucrative business. I see listed Australian and Canadian uranium stocks languishing and no investor’s interest.

aiyoh. nuclear leh. of course, the big one (black swan) has not happened yet until it happens lar; and when the big one happens, it may put the number of people killed in accidents involving Cars, airplanes, trains and ships as ‘miniscule’ lor.

when you have cars, accidents will happen related to cars.
when you have trains, accidents will happen related to trains.
when you have nuclear power plants, accidents will happen related to nuclear power plants (it is the destructive damage relative to cars, trains, etc).

the reason why certain countries are slowly phasing out nuclear power. perhaps these countries know the ultimate destructive force which is not worthwhile to have it even though they also must have the intelligence to know the death tolls is miniscule in comparison to cars, airplanes, trains and ships.

the same reason why extreme safety measures need to employed. but even so, accidents (due to human error or non-human error) do happen. like explosions in industrial plants and power plants (the danger many folds for nuclear plants as the radioactive fallout will spread far and wide). maybe it is quite alright for some people to see human disfigurement / abnormalities due to radiation as just another piece of widget to be fixed and a price to pay for “”"”progress”"”".

HAVE NOTICED YOU DROPPED THE “UNFALSIFIABLE” from your hypothesis. And hypothesis is defined as “a supposition or proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation” or “a proposition made as a basis for reasoning, without any assumption of its truth” ( i.e. an objective reasoned basis of proposition without the prejudiced bias introduced).

Taking the two together, it means the proposition is indeed capable of truth of actual occasioning of risk/damaged causation of happening. It need not be a full-blown Chernobyl, but operational defects of some sort resulting in radio-active contamination impact on Punggol residents.

I can’t see your objection to my post cautioning of risks elaborated.

John Grosse: Of course it’s a hypothesis! because Nuclear Disaster Potential, like Climate Change, is UNFALSIFIABLE HYPOTHESIS.

It begs the question of when unfalsifiable hypothesis of your convoluted language becomes a reality? Take a look at Boeing 737 Max 8. • No Dafts or Dogs Allowed:

You’re right in your ostracizing and debunking of this hyperbole. “UNFALSIFIABLE HYPOTHESIS”. Instead of using the definition “untenable”, these words “UNFALSIFIABLE HYPOTHESIS” is just a ‘tool word’ meant to confuse readers.

Even Trump had to ground all their Boeing 737 yesterday. Sultan of Johor & Malaysian Parliament mulling to declare State of Emergency in Johor. Why our so-called responsible MIWs “Diam Diam? or it is an “UNFALSIFIABLE HYPOTHESIS” of incidents?

    oxygen: @ John Grosse
    PLEASE READ THIS WEBLINK.
“Airline pilots on at least two US flights have reported that an automated system seemed to cause their Boeing 737 Max planes to tilt down suddenly.
The pilots said that soon after engaging the autopilot on Boeing 737 Max 8 planes, the nose tilted down sharply. In both cases, they recovered quickly after disconnecting the autopilot.”
US pilots reported issues with Boeing 737 Max

WOULD YOU STILL LABEL SUCH HAPPENINGS AS INSTANCES OF UNFALSIFIABLE HYPOTHESIS or hypothesis or more likely than not of reality happening of untold/unforgiven risks consequences likely – if neglected of attention and precautions taken now?

  • Freshest Air:

Even the polluted water and air are 100% toxic, they will say Punggol has the freshest air and tranquil greenery that is second to none so that their flat sales and property market will not be affected. Hence their property income from sales tax and market prices etc will still continue to flow in. Is all about money. Who wants Punggol to turn into a relegated deserted new town with no dweller buying after billions spent building that estate?
