Is a huge defence budget at the expense of a healthcare justifiable?

So, Shanmugam posted something on his Facebook page, comparing Finland with us in terms of sustainable healthcare. Apparently he read a Reuters article in which the entire Finland cabinet Ministers resigned because they could not deliver on their healthcare promise.

He used that as an example of why healthcare in Singapore has to be sustainable. I posted a reply on his FB, and very sadly for me, he banned me, LOL. I am no threat to him at all, I am a nobody. What is he afraid of? Anyway, this is what I wrote:

Dear Minister Shanmugam,

You bring up a very interesting comparison with Finland. Some points you should note, but failed to mention is the fact that Finland has a total defence budget of $4.8 billion, whereas our defence budget of $22.7 billion is almost 4.75 times more!

And Finland, if you will recall, has a much larger land area to defend as well as a known historical enemy with whom they have fought fairly recent wars, the Russians. We on the other hand have no identifiable military enemy that we are aware of.

If we had a defence budget similar to the Finns, we could afford to build 5 Khoo Teck Puat hospitals every year at $1 billion each and still have spare change left over. We could afford to pay every single Singaporean’s medical bills with just a fraction of our defence budget. I think if you ask the man in the street whether they would prefer free kidney dialysis or free surgery over a German Submarine or an American Stealth fighter, I am pretty sure the answer would not be a weapon.

You say health care spending must be sustainable. Well, I say so must defence spending. Our healthcare budget of $11.7 billion is entirely manageable and not a burden on the citizens at all, were it not for the ludicrous $22.7 billion (double the healthcare budget) spend on the military and weapons.

When you take so much money to buy weapons, and then say that healthcare has to be sustainable, and we have to watch the spending, its really stretching credibility.

Defence spending is not auditable. No one can ask how the money was spent. So the more the merrier.

Anyone still thinks F35 fighters are meant for defence. It was mentioned by the Minister that F35 could be used in meeting similar to Trump-Kim meeting. Anyone wants to believe that?

S$26Million was spent on the Trump-Kim meeting, anyone audited it?

  • Perspective:

The arms trade industry is a very shady world as can be seen in the Altantuya’s murder case and also the BAE case. Everything is dark and hidden from public sight. $22.7 Billion a year does seem like way over the top for a small city state. Are we protecting the South China Sea as well? LOL! All these money spent on state-of-art weapons of death could be better put to use in providing citizens with good welfare and health care.

  • Master Twister:

PAP cronies are always very good at the same trick.
If cannot deliver of course should resign to be accountable.

However evil PAP instead twisted it such that in order not to have such mass resignation, that it should “responsibly” spend less or set a low goal to save their own greedy skins.

Such twisted excuse has been used repeatedly in the past, are you able to see through the shameless trick?

  • Anon:

Finland’s cabinet resigned because they could not push through healthcare reforms that were deemed ‘unconstitutional’ by parliament. This is what democracy is about; not just capitulating to govt demands and priorities. The parliament realises and recognises it’s responsibility to the electorate despite the fact that Finland has suffered significantly because large corporations like Nokia in Oulu experiences a meltdown and many jobs were lost.

The cabinet had the decency to resign (in any case it is only a month away from the general elections) and let the electorate elect a new government that puts the healthcare interest of the populace before other priorities. Perhaps higher corporate taxes or cost cutting on other expenditures. It all boils down to political ideology. It’s not, as is implied, something that cannot be reconciled at all! That is what it is made out to be. It is wrong! The people of Finland understand their constitutional rights and expect their govt to adhere to it.

  • Hard to say:

As the 53rd state, the defense budget makes sense.
We are what we are today, “being and as the 53rd state”.
For survival, call it whatever you like, good or bad, cowardice or being realistic, the leaders had decided this is best.
The other choice is not to be the 53rd state.
Imagine living a solitary loner existence from the very beginning.
Given our location, position, surroundings, the geopolitics, the mentality of leaders, is there or could there be a alternative better plan.
    It is debatable.

    Dear Minister,

Your gratuitous swipe at Finland’s unpopular spending as an example of populism is unwarranted.
Unlike you and your cronies who never resign no matter how egregious the failure, the Finnish cabinet held themselves accountable and resigned.
Furthermore, contrary to your unwanted pompous pronouncements, the Finns will vote according to their interests. If they vote for populism what business is it of yours? You have no skin in the game in Singapore let alone Finland
