Caution From The Venezuelan Example

I was looking through the news on the internet and this piece of news troubled me greatly.

It is about incidents in Venezuela, which has a centrally planned, socialised healthcare system. It was mentioned that patients who opposed the dictatorial Maduro regime were denied healthcare by government doctors.

I think that this is a case we need to sit up and take notice. Let me state categorically what I stand for. I believe in the needs of strong safety nets. I think means can be explored on how the current healthcare coverage can be expanded.

But my message to all the political parties, especially for those of us who are disgusted by the authoritarian high-handedness of the PAP, if any of you are considering a centrally planned and controlled socialised healthcare, to reconsider as it might create a worse
monster than what we currently have in our hands, especially so if the sitting government of the day goes rogue. To safeguard against this, it is best to leave healthcare in the hands of the private sector, but maintain, expand and strengthen existing safety nets.

The situation in Venezuela has been bad for some time and is worse now with the current turmoil I have friends who had to bring in their own food supplies when they visited home because there is scarcity and some things are available only in the black market. The more reason why authoritarian regime must not be allowed to take root in a country because it tends to be corrupt, brutal, unjust and discriminatory.

Never had such problem in true democratic 1st world socialised healthcare country like Canada. Been a Canadian/US PR for over 15 years. May have to queue wait, get in line for service. Still get service. Some pay more so as not to wait.
My wife is Taiwanese. Universal health care too. Good service and cheap. But maybe going bankrupt.

So what is the cause of Venezuela problem ?

“centrally planned, socialised healthcare system” ? or “patients who opposed the dictatorial Maduro regime were denied healthcare by government doctors.”?

Is Venezuela the only “centrally planned, socialised healthcare system” in the world?

Are all or most of these “centrally planned, socialised healthcare system” facing the same problem as Venezuela ?

USA is the epitome of ” healthcare in the hands of the private sector”, the sector is certainly thriving. The shareholders of healthcare is certainly very well off.

But what about the patients? what about the ordinary citizen? Are they better off? Are they better served ?

I stay in Toh Yi Drive. Some of the GPs will dilly dally when it comes to my turn. Or they will refuse to see me. Some even close their clinics when they sense that I am going there. Some receptionists will tell me the waiting time is very long like lan jiao. Or they will say they don’t do such cases and ask me to go elsewhere.

I didn’t know educated people have to act like that. Doctors did take vows to save lives without fear or favor, did they not? So what happened to these? Don’t want to work for govt means I cannot see GP?

  • Not so fast. Ask for details:

Stratis Times: Hard choices need to be made to keep healthcare sustainable, says PM Lee Hsien Loong

Singaporeans should not be concerned about what PM says. Demand to see the details including the size of government reserves, cash flow statements of government hospitals, surpluses and cash holdings of self-funding statutory boards like SLA, LTS, URA, JTC, etc. If he does not provide details vote for regime change at the coming GE to find out the (whole) truth.

Not correct. There is a very easy choice to make healthcare sustainable. Singaporeans just need to vote for regime change. Get rid of THE cause of the problem.

Singaporeans would have a lot more money in their CPF for healthcare if prices of HDB flats did not go up so much over the last 15 years. It more than doubled in prices (while wages were stagnant) resulting in a huge windfall for SLA when it sold land to HDB. Also, if there were no massive influx of “cheap” (no CPF) foreign workers wages would not have been depressed and prices would not have gone up so much.

Unless you are a very serious fan of Fox News, one probably never heard of ‘Judge Jeanine,’ a talk-show host with a scary vocal range. Major understatement — I’m not a very serious fan of Fox News. And, no, I had never heard of Judge Jeanine. But, of course, she was impossible to miss on the US TV machines.

Why does Jeanine Pirro – or anyone else – feel the need to object to what Ms. Omar wears? Despite Pirro’s bigotry, I agree that hijabs, or any religious garb, have no place in a secular Congress.

Two things are true in this piece. One is that Anti-Semitism remains prevalent in American culture and takes many different forms. The second is that the tweet by the Congress woman did play into that old trop about Jews and money and was anti-Semitic.

Ilhan Omar is young and inexperienced. But, this is not surprising in light of the rather insular community in which she has grown up and lives. But, as a Member of Congress who represents a district with a significant Jewish population, she needs to understand that she is not the elected official of only her friends and family. She must represent her entire district. And, she needs to support her party’s line. Her remarks could have been phrased differently and have been less impulsive. Or, as many of us have said to the President, just don’t hit the send button.

In this case, Congresswoman Omar has been quite outspoken about the bias Muslims face in America, and has been very articulate and insightful about such bias. But while she has been quick to call out others on their Islamophobia, she has been less dedicated to exploring and working through her own implicit bias towards the Jewish community. Just because someone is a member of a minority group, or multiple minority groups, does not mean they are “woke” with regards to all minority groups. I think people should refrain from calling Ilhan Omar anti-Semitic, since it is not helpful now, and instead urge her to work on her own prejudices the way she has bid others to work on theirs.

OF COURSE, PAPpy is DIAM DIAM DIAM on its FAILED POPULATION RECYCLING ECONOMICS. So native peasants have to pay for more and more for services like MRT and healthcare via higher GSTs and other indirect BACKDOOR TAXES.

    @ patriot of TUMASIK:
I try not to get my information from one source, since editorial decisions, biases, and the limitations of the TV medium make any single source a fragile basis for actual understanding.

Different opinions are fine. Covering events and situations not covered by other media sources is fine. Providing variety is fine. In fact, all these aspects are good and laudable.

However, one would hope that any President has better sources of information than either show, and can get answers to his questions quickly. One would hope that he does not tweet and make policy based on what any one show is saying–especially since he can move markets, create crises, and affect geopolitical politics by what he says.

N Chan has a point, if it is fully controlled by the government of the day there is always a danger in any undemocratic country. A solution must be found to balance the power up there. venezuela is broke. nothing to do with America.

the socialist agenda leads to authoritarian dictatorship and centrally planned economy. you will need to get permits for production n import quotas. all these lead to bureaucracy n corruption. and corruption is rampant n entrenched in chink land. bureaucrats control the economy n contry. they have too much power and politicians have almost total powers.

‘power tend to corrupt, absolute power tends to corrupt absolutely.’

this is so true in socialist dictatorships. burma became poor due to socialism.

seems like tre have some pro communists nuts.

private healthcare is motivated by greed.

in sg, the model of restructured hospitals for profit is not working. subsidies rationing based on income, and going to polyclinic to get referrals to get subsidy is a waste of time n resources.

a chas subsidy pays little. medishield is complex, and the others funds are difficult too claim n doctors will not treat you with more expensive drugs if they know you have obtained medifund.

a more generous spending by the state on healthcare is a must due to ageing population.

the pioneer generation has slogged to accumulate the reserves, now when they are getting old, the reserves that are accumulated should be used to pay for their health care and their financial needs.

private healthcare is not the solution.

can die but cannot fall sick, in sg n even socialist chink.
