Who are the victims of the NUS peeping tom incident?

Ms Monica Baey

I want to make a statement that will appear to be controversial.

Most people think that Monica Baey is still the victim today.

Yes, she was the victim of the NUS peeking tom incident but that occurred some time ago. She had complained to the NUS and she or NUS made a police report.

The police decided to give the perpetrator, Nicholas Lim, a conditional warning. NUS took the next step and acted according to its regulations to suspend Nicholas for a few months and asked him to apologize to Monica. He did.

Nicholas paid the price for his foolish act.

Monica is angry at the light sentence. She raised this issue in social media.

The outcome is that Nicholas Lim is now suspended by his current employer Great Eastern Life. He might have also resigned. His future looks uncertain.

I consider that Nicholas Lim and his parents are now the victims of this episode. Some people might say – he deserve it.

I disagree. As a society, we have to be fair to everybody. Nicholas has already paid the price which was considered to be appropriate at that time.

Our society cannot be so vindictive and punitive. We cannot continue to punish a person repeatedly for the same offense. We cannot condemn him for a lifetime.

I commend Monica for her courage in bringing this matter up. But she could have raised this issue in a more general way, and not involve Nicholas Lim directly, as I understand there were several incidents of this nature in NUS.

For the sake of clarity, I must declare that I do not know Nicholas Lim or his parents. But I feel their anguish.

I am quite sad that as a society we are do not understand compassion. We do not know when it is enough.

By all means, NUS should increase its penalty for this kind of offense. Maybe the police should have charged Nicholas Lim in court for the offense.

Do not make Nicholas Lim the victim of wrong decisions taken the Police and NUS.

  • Tell Me About It, Mr Tan:

Singapore is very unforgiving society and will hold it against someone. For example, civil service job applications will ask an applicant to declare if he/she ever resigned from a stat board/govt organisation. So what if the applicant has? If the job seeker is not happy in his previous workplace. The best thing is to quit. So why hold it against him? AND WHY CAN”T HE/SHE SAY THAT THEY ARE NOT HAPPY WORKING THERE?

There is also this culture of – the employee should not bad mouth the boss but the boss can be unprofessional and make personal attacks in the guise of “work review”. What I find troubling is the way it is accepted by both employers and employees for employers to bad mouth employees. It is spiteful and vindictive. Some organisations’ egos are so big that they can’t get over people quitting on them. So these bastards must bad mouth people. Don’t have the maturity to part ways amicably?

Now comes the ridiculous part. People who quit might find prospective employers wary of hiring. So people cannot start on a clean slate? Why are Singapore employers so pre occupied with someone’s past? No one has a past? It also means no experience. Companies here not at all forward looking. Got such thing as perfect employee.

Sometimes we all commit faux pas, but people might not be gracious enough to forgive.

I totally don’t know what is mechanical engineering. So I told a student how great it was to be able to fix stuff like computers etc. He got really cheesed off as he thought I was implying that he was no better than a handyman. If I’ve not mistaken, Mr Tan is Ah Kong of 3 gals. If Monica was one of his granddaughters, wonder would Mr Tan still think and say the same.

Monica did not raise the issue in the social media immediately after the incident without first going to the police and NUS. She was forced to only after the police and the school took the incident too lightly.

Police told her to just accept the outcome. School just pass her words of apology from the culprit. What else can a poor young lady do to seek justice?

How would Ah Kong Tan react or what would Ah Kong Tan do if it was his granddaughter who was the victim and was being told by the police to “just (had) to accept the outcome”?

One website reported that there’s been other previous cases, which means Monica’s was not the first case the police and NUS have handled with tide-apa attitudes. And it’s because previous cases have not been dealt with properly that’s why Monica was the latest victim. Does Mr Tan want to have to worry for his granddaughters safety and privacy when they’re big enough to be in the Uni?

Mr. Tan, I also want to emphasize, for clarity’s sake, that had a proper judiciary process taken its due course, Nicholas would not have suffered at the hands of the mob. Several lawyers interviewed had wondered how come this particular guy is not hauled to court. It is his fate, just as a taxi driver once said to me in Chinese that it is “Aloysius Pang’s fate to move on” (simply because he can’t explain such an accident for lack of evidence or logic).

Call Nicholas suay, but I say this is how society works now when there’s ZERO trust between politicians/establishment and peasants. The fact that you empathize with Nicholas made me take notice of a fundamental difference between you and Roy Ngerng. Both of you are passionate about social justice, but by your naturally even temperament, you are not filled with anger like Roy.

In case you are not aware, I’ll bet that more people are boiling with anger by the day for every new article that appears on alternative websites, on things getting worse than they used to be. Sorry Mr Tan I fully disagree with what you have written and this is why.

For a start, the police DID NOT give him adequate punishment, this is why Monica seeked redress. People have read and noted that past humsups filming women in the shower have had jail sentences so this should be applied FAIRLY to all humsups, there is no such thing as a person being suited for rehabilitation and so given a warning and close the book. No way.

Because if this is allowed to stand then all future humsups can also refer to this humsup and say they are suitable for rehabilitation as well and why not, he can rehabilitate and given a warning so can any of us is it not logical now?

All this would never have happened if the mata gave him fair punishment, the public currently sees this as having 2 separate laws depending on what the police think and this is just not right.

So you claim that this humsup is the victim? For an undergraduate he sure doesn’t come across as too bright now doesn’t he? Why didn’t he think of the consequences before filming her in the shower?

If he loses his job and can’t get another then it’s ORBI GOOD to him.

LHL is even more vindictive and will not let it go, even towards his own famiLEE. So, you can’t blame her lah. The character of the LEEder reflects back into the character of the society yes?

Mr Tan is right in calling for a more compassionate society. However, just look at some of the elites.

What do they do after they get a letter of apology?
First, the letter of apology must be well publicised, and worded according to their dictate.
Then, the letter will be used as solid proof, acceptable at face value by the system, to extract crippling compensation from the other party.

So hoh, Monica is already very nice and compassionate, going by this elite standard.

We are nurtured by the system into who we are.

The system is ColdBlooded. Wrong is severely punished. Politically it’s even worse. Political opponents are treated the worst.

We grow up fearing this and that.
We are stressed and money no enough.
We are terkan by the system.
We THUS REACT WITH THE SAME HARSHNESS THE SYSTEM TREATED US.
Karma. Cause and Effect. Newton’s law of thermodynamics. What goes around comes around, eventually. A big bully could have died without losing . But where is the karma? There is karma. His son will continue to bully others, emboldened by the perceived No Karma. Eventually he will lose his Longan. Pro.State. siblings broke up. House Chicken and Dogs no peace.
    鸡犬不宁。

Singaporeans appear very Vengeful. Unforgiving. That’s because the system is unforgiving and torturing.

Unforgiving is also with limitation. They dare not be unforgiving to the Big Bully.
They dare to be unforgiving to everyone else. A venting of their frustrations.

The Boy did wrong. The girls is the victim.
The problem is the NUS and light punishment. Singaporeans feel that if it were them, they would unlikely be given light punishment. This is what drives them mad. It become personal.

What if the peeping Tom were an alternative leader?
Surely he would be given a light punishment?

I don’t think Singaporeans behaved wrongly.
What is wrong that makes Singaporeans mad is perceived lack of impartiality.

The people are not against the boy. The people are mad at the perceived lack of impartiality.

It’s a matter of principle and not a matter about the principals or the police.

    Their madness is justified.

You have chosen to speak up for Nicholas so it makes me wonder whether you have chosen to speak up for Benjamin Lim as well back then.

For a fact, Nicholas has CHOSEN to be a deviant and committed an act that he as a mature thinking adult should know better not to do otherwise, so he has to accept all the full consequences that comes with it. There is no excuse whether the treatment he faces thereafter is too hard or too lenient or that it ripples throughout the rest of his life.

If people choose to be generous and let him off lightly, good for him and he should be grateful. If people choose not to forgive or forget or to be vindictive, he and no one has any excuse or reason to blame others. Not him, not his family and not even you. Not even if he is extremely remorseful. The only way out for him is to pay back what he has done through real redeeming actions and hopefully he will be forgiven at some points in the future and be able to really move on.

Actions has consequences and THAT is a fact in life AND that is the reason why human beings are kept in check so that the society does not end up in chaos.

By speaking up for Nicholas in such a way, by attempting to portray the perpetrator/culprit as now the victims, by questioning the degree of the victimization of those who has actually been hurt, rather than questioning / giving improvements on the flaws of the due process and incompetency of the system & people involved, it really shows your integrity and worthiness as a human being.

The online trend of trivializing crimes, magnifying the merits/privacy of and mercy for the criminals/perpetrators and yet at the same time belittling the victims in every sense, etc is not one that should be encouraged. For those who do it (and yes i do include the mainstream media too), shame on you. In fact, double & triple shame on you.

Just so you know..I believe very much in 2nd Chance but not before you serve your times. As far as i am concerned, you commit the same crime, you do the same times. Nothing More. Nothing Less.

I disagree with yr statement to the NUS voyeur scandal. Monica did quietly went to NUS and the police to seek redress didn’t she?, as she felt justice was not adequately meted by the police and NUS. And more so because the actions(or this case in action)of the NUS and the SPF will not deter future occurrences . But she was brushed off. She is the victim of the perpetrator so why should she protect the perpetrator’s identity. If there is a criminal in your neighbourhood and got away with just a slap on the wrist would you not want to know his identity? You did not show a shred of empathy & understanding of her plight, the trauma of being filmed while taking her shower nor the anguish she suffered trying to seek justice with NUS and the police. What she did is not much different from you and many others making protest speeches in Hong Lim park.
You portrayed yourself as an advocate of the poor, the weak and against bad government policies detriment to the interest of the common people. You implied that Monica should have kept quiet and let NUS “……….conduct their affairs in the manner that they deem to be appropriate…..” Well isn’t this what PAP would always claim? and is still doing oblivious to the protest and “noises” you people make at Hong Lim?
In the Benjamin Lim’s case? Why is he also treated differently from this NUS case? Did SPF send 4 or 5 policemen to NUS to question the perpetrator?

Recently you called out to Singaporeans to speak up without fear. Isn’t this what Monica is doing? For the plight of the perpetrator and his family you should know who to blame and it’s definitely not Monica Baey. Monica has every right to name & identify her perpetrator. Just as you have every right to name the organisation or parties whose policies are hurting the people or of any one who hurt your family members.
Yr statement on this is hypocritical from the other persona that you portrayed yourself to be. You also named the perpetrator in your social media so you are just as guilty adding to the plight of the perpetrator and his family.

The peeping Tom of NUS has been trailed and convicted on a 12-month probation. The sentence maybe more lenient compared to others with a similar offence and this is exactly the reason for comments on social media including comments made by the education minister.

This is definitely not trail by media as alluded in the msm. The case is over, done, convicted and signed.

MSM is thus propagating fake news. Such news should not be allowed to be published in the msm as it is not true.

These comments, including those from the victims, which I have not read are what you deemed post-conviction discussions. It is exactly with the advent of internet that we see such discussions taking place in the public domain. It is the same in the United States where open post-reportings are still made about the Mueller Report and the hate-Trump media.

This is healthy discussions and would in no way constitute a trail unless the msm is calling for a re-trail. As a born and bred true blue, I have never heard of a re-trail in this country. To do so, would mean something is amissed in the administration of our laws.

Really, we should all feel sorry for him? Upskirt pervs are jailed, this offender is still on the street. Others have their phones and computers searched for previous activity, has this happened to Mr. Lim, if it has it has been kept very quiet. Who is so nieve to think Mr. Lim has had the bad luck of being caught the first time he did this, (if so he is truly unlucky and I am not implying he did it previously only the odds).

    Tan Kin Lian,

I am really disappointed with what you wrote.

You call the perpetrator a victim? This is ridiculous. I think something is wrong with your mind.

If you are voted into parliament, I am certain you will encourage more peeping toms.

Look what is going on now. There is another peeping tom case in NUS within a week after the Nicholas Lim case.

Do you still think Nicholas Lim is also a victim?
