Is forgiving so difficult for us

Ms Monica Baey took to social media seeking redress after her plea to the police and NUS to enhance the punishment of her offender failed.

Is forgiving so difficult for us, or have we forgotten how to?

My opinion that the society should not always put their perspective in only black or white.

When I mention that the penalty given to a person due to the fact that he was remorseful and that he is also not a repeat offender. People says that I am endorsing his act as correct.

I remembered that once there was a great and noble woman was accused of receiving funds from unknown sources. Did she laundering monies or should she be put to jail? I did not remembered she was put to jail nor penalise. Should it be a black and white and law by law situation. She could have been put to jail.

Our society should be a forgiving and caring one. We should not just condemn a behaviour, we help them to outcome the habits. Many Malaysian were against the removal of death penalty, but I was happy that Malaysia has abolish it. Can anyone vault that Judge would never misjudge? Death penalty could not be reverse when the subject was later proven to be innocent. If so, how can justice be uphold?

The rule of law, if not applied by the authority the people appointed must be redresssed by the people themselves.

Otherwise only a very few will dictate how society will reward or punish unacceptable behaviour. Society itself has the final say on what punishment a person deserves or not.

It is all very well to talk about forgiveness. Forgiveness for any case must be earned. It is not a commodity that can be exploited because of someone’s wealth or standing. Forgiveness without a reason does not help society and encourages more and more atrocities.

The Malaysian death penalty was removed because society deemed it was not required. In future it might be brought back again be cause society deems it necessary. Forgiveness has nothing to do with this.

In $G this Nicholas pervert has been found guilty by society at large. The only question is what price is to be paid.

    It is that simple.

  • To Forgive, DIVINE:

I recall my uni days – make a blunder and your project group will not include that person next time. Also, everyone wants to be Indian chief. No one wants to be followers.

My working days, don’t say the wrong things. People rarely forgive – even if you apologize. Their face more important.

MRT got a lot of stupid bastards that cannot walk properly and collide into other people. Maybe rushing to pang sai. Unforgivable.

Singapore got a lot of rude people. Rude for no reason. I don’t give a fiack if you are having a bad day or the women’s aunt has visited them. I did not cross you b*t*h, so don’t give me black face or attitude or push without saying “excuse me”.

Singapore is home to many proud, arrogant, self righteous, egotistical people where face is of paramount important. Cannot lose face or else they will be mad at the offender for life. Humility is not a virtue in Singapore, it is a weakness.

You cannot make mistakes in Singapore be it at work, play and all other situations. We are all perfectionists and have zero tolerance for defects. That’s why people tend to copy the successful business models and products. Don’t make mistakes!

There are also a lot of traitors and turn coats who do not value loyalty. I once hired a junior writer called Elaine H and that b*t*h ingrate jumped to the other camp in the office on her second day at work.

I know of churches which function like country clubs. They welcome people who are “perfect” ie those with high paying jobs, condos, landed property, cars. And shun the lowly, the down-on-his-luck types. In the bible, Jesus is alright with the prostitute and the robber, as long as they are willing to believe in HIM.

That’s why to forgive is DIVINE, especially in Singapore.

  • I like lyCHEE, hate LOONGan:

Before anyone talks about forgiving the perp, think about the plight of the poor gal who was deeply traumatised by the incident first. And what about her family?

Actually I can’t understand why would people sympathise with him. This is not just a peeping incident. He filmed it. Who knows if he wasn’t caught what would he had done with the video. Watch it over and over again? Or share it with his friends? Will he go on to film another? Who can say for sure he would not? And if he wasn’t caught, will he be remorseful?

He can be forgiven after he served his rightful punishment by the law. He can still pick himself up and start afresh after that but his innocent victim has to live with it the mental trauma for who knows how long.

Forgiving is not difficult but it depends on what crime has been committed.

    Yet another confused daft.
Justice and forgiveness are two different things.
Justice must be served first before forgiveness can be given.
Get this order wrong the rule of law will breakdown and society will be in a huge mess.

Forgive and forget is only up to the victim.

Netizens are third party. They are more concern on the fairness of the punishment.

Why for one allegation of molest, it needed 5 police officers going to the school to escort the alleged to police station for questioning, until the boy killed himself to prove his innocence.

And one, which committed a proven crime, just received a warning.

People were just question how fair is our SPF. Just like we shouted referee kayu in a football match.

  • Perspective:

How does one determine true remorse? When caught in the act, an offender will often show remorse to get away with punishment. A young 14-year old took his own life because he thought he would be charged and sentenced for an alleged incident inside the elevator. In the recent case the evidence is clear but no charges were brought. The public outcry is over the perceived inconsistency in the application of the rule of law. Imho, forgiveness can only come from the victim and her family, and they agree not to press charges. It is not for anyone else to decide/

Response: well said. Mother of all Great Comments and Summing UP on this NUS-Gate.

This is one of the many IMPORTANT ISSUES that TOUCHES and INVOLVES the life of EVERYONE OF US, esp the common folks, as we go about doing our DAILY ROUTINE of going to work, school, attending to family matters, etc, in OUR RAT-RACE SOCIETY. This case is all about outrage of the modesty of a lady, and it happened in a bathroom of NUS instead of elsewhere. And it’s a CRIME which involves a PERPETRATOR(Nicholas) and a VICTIM (Monica) and it’s being reported to both NUS and the Police. For some factors and reasons, a number of such cases were NOT REPORTED. Even when they were REPORTED, NUS solved and resolved the matter with 2 strikes and in some cases 3 strikes policy! On the Police side, they also solved and resolved cases and issues according to the dedication of each and every officer assigned to deal with such cases! We are more CONCERNED on the FAIRNESS of PUNISHMENT, period.

We are also very CONCERNED that the proposed Protection Against Online Falsehood and Manipulation Act is NOT PASSED by the ParLEEMent. We are very CONCERNED that NO ONE, even the PeeM of the country, is wasting precious time and taxpayers money BY USING the Parliament to DEBATE and CLEAR himself of accusations by his own siblings of abuse of power using state organs. Last but not least, We are NOT CONCERNED whether a certain house in Orchard Rd should or should NOT be demolished! This IS NOT A NATIONAL BUT A PERSONAL ISSUE, PERIOD!

AN OCEAN DIVIDE SEPARATE THE STUDENTS from the administration. A live tweet, if accurate, spoke of student crying out for help that those in decision-making power “don’t understand us”. One student spoke of ANGER, FEAR AND LOSS OF SENSE OF PERSONAL SAFETY – on campus. OMG!

The students spoke the language of sexual assault, the administration spoke of sexual misconduct (student audibly groaning in disapproval when misconduct was uttered.

I google the legal definition of assault of assault and battery. Here they are.

An assault is carried out by a threat of bodily harm coupled with an apparent, present ability to cause the harm. It is both a crime and a tort and, therefore, may result in either criminal or civil liability.

Battery. At common law, an intentional unpermitted act causing harmful or offensive contact with the “person” of another.

There is bodily contact in battery BUT NOT ASSAULT -any act that induce fear in another constitute “assault” in law.

Monica Baey, in asking for disciplinary, requested for no-contact separation. This is FEAR AND PLEADING FOR HELP. She is traumatised.

IS THE ADMINISTRATION OUT OF TOUCH WITH REALITY OF THE STUDENTS” expressed anger, fear and loss of safety concerns evidence by its “delusion” to misconduct (whatever that means to them) instead of assaults ( the students’ real fear in accordance to legal definition of real happening) needing closure??

Women are emotional creatures and justice related to a moral subject which pitches at their emotions cannot be resolved within the boundaries of reasoning.

Furthermore, in such a society as Singapore, where religions are employed as foundational building blocks of society as well as political tools, the men must appear to be supportive of their valued “bedmates” where the “VOTE” or affections count.
