The PAP only have themselves to blame for the citizen’s skeptcism

I have read and watched online some of K. Shanmugam’s speeches in Parliament about the need to effectively tackle the spread of fake news. While I agree with most of what he has said, I wish to discuss why there is still widespread disapproval, lack of support and disquiet among citizens.

To me, the answer is simple. The absolute trust that the people of my parent’s generation had for the PAP government is now gone.

That is precisely why citizens are worry that it is totally possible for the PAP government of today to abuse those laws, if they are passed in their current form, to hammer the oppositions even harder in order to remain in power. In the words of Dr Mahathir, this is to sustain themselves.

Trust is a very precious and fragile thing, and political trust from our own citizens is even more so. But the PAP government’s record of trust (or the lack of it) and strengthening trust among Singaporeans has been dragged through the mud at best. At worst, it has entirely collapsed.

Examples of it are many and I will give four. Namely,

1) PAP’s failure to honour its own promise of returning to CPF members’ their savings in full when they turn 55 years of age;
2) The promise of continuing price appreciation of Singaporeans’ HDB flats given by different PAP ministers is now broken. The term “Asset Enhancement” has now become toxic and dirty;
3)One after another colossal losses choked up by our sovereign wealth funds being kept under wrapped even from our Parliament is totally worrying among citizens;
4)The way our politicians pay themselves their salaries and bonuses so generously using our citizen’s hard-earned tax monies is just so incredible

I am old enough to know and remember that tough policies put forth and pushed through by the late LKY’s government. They too were unpleasant but supported by the people because the people believed that they were for the bigger good of our country. Even though people were largely uneducated, they rallied and they supported them strongly. Examples of such policies were the compulsory National Service and the Stop-at-two policy.

Today, it is very clear that many people are not as convinced that those proposed anti-fake news laws are only for the bigger good of our country. In short, the PAP government only has itself to blame for our citizens’ hesitation, cynicism or even fear for what K.Shanmugam is putting forth in Parliament.

    @Simon; allow me to add more.

    PAP changed the constitution for a Malay President but selected an Indian to masquerade as one.

    GRC is to ensure minority races MPs to be elected into Parliament, but now Chinese is using the GRC to enter parliament.

    GRC is to have minority representation in Parliament, but it is now known that it was during election time only. After the election, not necessary.

    Having a wife of a minister as Auditor General is not a conflict of interest.

    Having a family’s lawyer as Attorney General is not a conflict of interest.

    Foreigners provide employment for Singaporeans. The fact proved that foreigners took away our PMET jobs.

    Lied about the older generation cannot accept a non-Chinese as PM when this generation voted the most non-Chinese during their time.

    Telling an obvious lie that POFMA narrows the power of the government. If that’s the case why introduce this law?

    @Simon Lim
    LKY evil regime policies are rammed down our throats. Most of us don’t like it, don’t accept it but have to swallow it. NS is cheap slave labour except for the white horse, fake scholar and paper generals
    Stop at 2 kills lots of innocent lifes. Is another failure. Now to correct it, LHL even more evil regime import millions of foreign trash cheap labour. PAP is only good at using cheap labour and third world type policies to enrich themselves and impoverished the peasants. How is that good for the country as a whole?

  • opposition dude:

    The PAP can do whatever it wants whenever it wants because it hasn’t suffered politically. This is why ministers remain unaccountable and protected no matter what. This is also why ministers’ pay remains sky high.

    We have a choice this year but how will we use it remains to be seen. Are the kiasees fed up enough to vote more opposition into parliament? Will we see more ministers kicked out this year?

    You send PAP a crystal clear signal and they will respond accordingly.

  • "The devil is in the details":

    Straits Times: Rules on CPF usage and HDB housing loans updated to ensure homes for life

    “They would also be entitled to the maximum Housing Board loan of 90 per cent of the property price or valuation if they are buying resale HDB flats, according to a joint statement by the ministries of Manpower and National Development on Thursday.”

    It is the LOWER of the property(asking) price or valuation.

    Is it HDB’s valuation (using the same methodology as the one used for its Lease Buyback Scheme)? This methodology values a flat based on the remaining lease. This proves an HDB flat is a depreciating asset worth ZERO at the end of the lease.

    If it is the valuation of an “approved” property valuer will HDB require them to take into account the remaining lease, not just the last transacted price for the same size flat in the same estate?

    The above is important since the asking price for many old flats (over 20+ years) is around the same price as a NEW flat (99-year lease) from HDB of the same size and the same estate. This is irrational.

  • Pathetic last wayang:

    For the few months after the surprise win Mahathir has over Umno n took over the Government of Malaysia , it shocked SIN PAP the most n first time in 5 decades the fear of losing its control over Singapore crept into the physical carcas of the arrogant, egoistic, arrogant, ingrate n betrayal of the nation n her people. They have been boasting all along what they have done n care for Singaporeans when the mass of Singaporeans seeing that the coast of living rises phenomenally faster than their take home pay. The workers under tripartite consisting of PAP minister controlled n PAPists management of NTUC, PAP single party government n Employers Rep but papplps, in short PAP decides. On NWC, the millionaire top mgement is free, thr midrange 1 mth n the workers weeks. When Workers seeking for salary increase, the tripartite has only one phrase – productivity is low n does not warrant pay increase. Many wonder PAP claimed n boast internationally of their economic progress is all due to the operation in the dark of PAP Cabinet n sue until pants drop if citizens speculate upon the next to zero information officially released n the rest of Singaporeans do not contribute to the success but r burden n have to sacrifice by way of taxes, fast rising cost of living while ministers get next to free forst class medical n dental treatment while citizens have to pay thru their noses. To add salt to injuries the multimillion salary with multimillions year bonus the ministers given themselves n creating more ministers each year so that each ministry is looked after by two or more ministers with their perm sec, parl sec etc n when nfi setting up committees with members paid with national award by named medals or foreign experts on multimillions consultation.
    The last few months have seen PAP desperately tried to soften their bias against citizens kim benefits while they have znO Problem to spend billions for the benefits of foreigners eg free education n retrenching to provide employment for the millions of imported foreigners. They began to throw little carrots while at the same time fleecing the CPF by mandating health insurance, a way of money laundering from CPF to state fund so that GIC etc can use without accountability. In God name if they get away from karma this time, SIN will be bankrupted n national security badly compromised by the foreigners imported.

  • Another planning failure?:

    Straits Times: New incentives for rail commuters in congested areas who choose other modes of transport: LTA

    What is this? MRT is supposed to be the backbone of the public transport system. Didn’t PAP claim it plans long-term, up to 50 years? What happens when the population hits 10m?

  • Neo-Confucianist Tu Wei Ming:

    If we have to choose one word to characterize Confucian Ethics, that word would have to be “Humanity”. The main concern of Confucian ethics is the whole process of learning to be “Human”. This process involves a total commitment, a continuous effort of Self-Refinement or self-improvement and a Holistic Vision of
    the entire project of Moral Education. Motivated by sympathy and compassion, a humane person establishes an ever-expanding network of interpersonal and cross-cultural relationships. Trust is implicit in these relationships. With Trust, legal constraints are simply preventive measures. When interchange among peoples and cultures is conducted in Good Faith, then Civility pervades the process and mutual learning ensures. If we have faith in the dialogue among civilizations, we can learn not merely from the wisdom of our own tradition but from the cumulative wisdom of the entire human community.

  • Lye Khuen Way:

    I have to agree with “patriot of TUMASIK”.

    The two policies “Simon Lim” quoted as well supported ones were at best, stop gap measures for a difficult period in our young history then.

    National Service now in view of the huge foreign influx is a indefensible policy.

    To one who had served dutifully decades ago, what will I do if mobolised now is a touchy question.

    One which, decades ago I would have no hesitation in answering.

    Why the difference?
    Why the uncommitted hesitation now?
