Fait Accokpli

Fait Accompli, a thing that has already happened or been decided upon before those affected hear about it, leaving them with no option but to accept it.

Yes, we had the theatre of the Committee, which included the grilling of any who wanted to share their POV as though they were criminals in a court of law, but I understand the normal steps of how a bill and law are created were not followed as they usually are with steps shortened or omitted limiting 3rd party input.

And then we had the Main Stream Media (MSM) theatre with all the fearmongering of why POFMA is needed and the selling of why we should trust the PAP, including the “Ah Lian meets Minister Shanmugam” sales video, with these overreaching powers but nowhere were anybody’s question or concerns ever really listened to or answered.

Apparently we all “didn’t understand” or “got our facts wrong” or “misinterpreted” or “made mistakes” or “were not listening properly” or one of the many statements essentially saying if you don’t believe what I want you to believe you must be wrong, misguided or have a negative agenda.

All we had in the MSM and then in the Parliamentary “debates” was an ever-adjusting sales pitch and an ever more frustrated “sales team” trying to convince us to believe what they had already decided upon and having challenges deflecting the many valid points and questions posed or attacking those making them feel awkward.

And so on the 9th of May, after POFMA was passed upon party lines with the PAP MPs without sales scripts silently lining up behind the proposers, one of whose reasons for saying independent or judicial checks and balances are not needed is that parliament can keep wayward ministers in check, we must wake to this new reality.

So why in my graphic do I say there is “opportunity in Fait Accompli”?

Because we can learn from it.

Especially those standing in the middle ground and our many new citizens, which despite my 30 plus years of being here, I am counted among.

What makes a society work, and certainly a public government relationship, is a shared belief in a moral code and an atmosphere of trust that allows us to work together even though we may not have close personal relationships with everyone we meet.

This shared moral code and trust give us confidence that we and our families have a safe space in which to operate, invest and grow in, that our contributions are valued and appreciated and that we have a sense of certainty about our world.

This morning we must hold those involved in bringing this terrible “Fait Accompli” in to being up to the lens of our personal moral codes and ask do these people still align with us and with the ethics of how we have been told our society and “democratic” government should function?

and do we still have a sense of certainty about our country, its future and our place in it?

This morning we should all be looking hard at the colour white and wondering do we still have the same beliefs and trust we had in it as before?

Do they really represent who we are and what we want in our elected officials?

Even more so when we remember other recent acts by them.

The lady publicly listed among prominent Indians in Singapore, Madam Halimah Yacob, who is now our reserved Malay Elected president.

Our experiential and historically noted first elected president Mr Ong Teng Cheong who is no longer counted as such for expedience sake.

And the Charles Chong misinformation saga to win in Ponggol East during the 2015 elections that has never been answered or accounted for amongst other actions.

Are these people still worthy of our trust, especially to be arbiters of Fake and Misleading acts, other than maybe they have gained some expertise committing them so should be familiar with what they are in practice.

Recognising our new world today, we must all start to think about how to operate in it as it is no longer the one we had before.

For the middle ground I hope you will approach everything you see and hear from the government with a healthier does of scepticism than maybe you have done before so as not to be even more badly burned in the future.

For the New citizens I hope you will not automatically give your loyalty to these people, even if on the surface they seem better than those you may have left behind, for now you can start to see behind the façade and understand that in whichever country you make your home you can only really rely upon yourselves and your fellow citizens to ensure your future.

And for us all lets think about how do we now approach or daily lives, especially our conversations whether in public and now private mediums, and continue to say and do what we know is Morally and Ethically correct using facts that we know are true so it makes it as hard as possible for them to justify using an unjust law against us.

Our future is only curtailed once we stop making an effort to maintain and grow it.

Let’s not be sad this day because we feel we have been abused by this process and are fearful of this new law but feel empowered that we now know the true nature of those who seek to rule us by that law while exempting themselves from those very same rules.

At least we can sleep at night knowing where we stand in our own hearts and what we believe in where others may have more difficulty.

And we can start building better bonds with our neighbours and those alternative voice who stand with is and share similar moral and ethical feelings that we do while seeking to limit the negative effects of those who we now know do not.

There is always a silver lining if you look for it.

That silver lining will be painted over now, … in white !!!

Those who have stayed silent will remain so.
Those who have found their voices will be silenced, … again !!!
Those who continue to voice out, … will be made examples of.

“Silence” will return to the island, … once again.

Just the way the regime wants it, … along with the 70%, and POFMA ensures this !!!

You do not understand the majority of $G voters.

They will make a bit of noise here and there but when the time to vote actually comes no amount of words or facts or figures or sacrifices will change them

The 70% will vote the government in again because not one of them believes in democracy or freedom.

This is how most Asians are. There is not one real functioning democracy in Asia. Not one.

Democracy is a Western concept imported by the British. They are gone now. It fits the Western ideals of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

The democratic system works because the people make it work – not the other way around.

Asians – especially $G which is an immigrant island – look to get out of the system what they can and for as long as they can. This automatically reverts to a despotic system. This is how $G has been from 1965.

However people refuse to see the truth for what $G actually is. Most have never been to or lived in a real democracy. They are unable to understand or accept that democracy means constant conflict and compromise between different parties. For $G and asians as a group what is important is uniformity and consistency – this is what you get from despotism. The more the better.

There is a lot of talk about democracy – but the bare bones is the people here don’t care about it conceptually nor want to make the sacrifices to achieve it practically. They would rather complain about things they cannot change – because being the victim makes them free of responsibility for what happens to others and finally to themselves.

Trying to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear is not going to work.

Just contemplate on “You die your business” and you will understand why things are as they are.

Ed Tong says “Crying wolf repeatedly gets no attention”.

I think the MIW need to be reminded that “Crying wolf repeatedly lose people’s trust” too!

The cup is half FULL. Be optimistic. Let the bullies be happy for now. They always get what they want anyway but unity of sg voters could put this fake news law the last fait accompli.

If they restrict us to use the social media to spread truth, then perhaps we should just bring ourselves back to the olden days where messages were spread through words of mouth or using black and white!

We should start educating the people around us who are apolitical. Opposition members should step up their campaigns with GE just round the corner while patriotic and the more educated singaporeans should raise awareness of the danger to letting the group of whites dominate our parliament.

SG belongs to all singaporeans, not just the pap. We should all do our parts to save SG.

@Brad; Recently DPM Heng said; “Dialogue, partnership key for building trust”.

Let’s see what he was talking about. Dialogue is “MPs meeting-the-people session”. Ya, right people may be talking but nothing was done. BTW did they listened to the people opposing the POFMA bill?

The partnership was referring to the tripartite system. Those parties involved were also sharing the same bed, the Union is the government too!! Did the tripartite system work for the workers? Most jobs went to FTs!

Early announcement of tax increase is building trust? I would say the PAP was telling the people “Tax will be increased, what can you do?”

What promises did they make that was beneficial to the people? Maybe withdrawal of CPF? Or the value of HDB flat will not allow to go down? So which one?

He also mentioned, “In whatever we do, as political leaders, it is critical that we put people at the center of all that we do”. I am not sure how many people at the Symposium in Switzerland were laughing, taking them as fools like Singaporeans.

  • Haigen-Diaz:

Relationships drive us to find deeper meaning, connectedness, compassion. This is a beautiful vision. But here’s the thing. How is it that, we have drifted so far from this vision?

But it does go deeper to a spirit of listening, to looking for the bigger problems, to realizing that many forces are at play these days but that the drive for a common vision of humanity, of stewardship of the citizens, of even self-preservation, needs to return to care of each other, empathy.

There is a political class which, while nominally representing the citizens, in many ways acts primarily to preserve itself and its position of power and influence. Yet these elected officials who, nominally, are subject both to the rule of law and to the choice of the electorate.

Somehow we’ve lost our Framework with an apparently well-meaning democratic set-up leading to a reality where there is an elite class in power and in which the vast majority of citizens have very little influence.

Our political system has been transmogrified into a Machiavellian work of sadistic art.

THE POFMA POLITICAL CIRCUS forces peasant Ah Huays and Ah Seng to choose either ends instead of the preferred middle neutrality.

If falsity is so distinguishable, IT DOES NOT NEED POFMA TO DISCOVER this anomaly from reality – peasants can see for themselves. If the contrary is true i.e. truth and falsity are BOTH MALLEABLE, falsity can also be spread by fake news propaganda.

Why is propaganda “superior” to “neutrality” reality exposed by and in the social media? I fail to comprehend.

  • YadaYada:

The whole script sounded quite resigned. His only fallback is a “moral code” but as with most people, his understanding of society and the world is rather academic(top down) and “clergy influenced”.

To be governed by a moral code(, another form of law) is to be governed by the spirit of hypocrisy and be like blind deaf and dumb sheep(hence political suicide for all).

To cut the long story short( too long to write) the result is a Singapore society – who do not give a hoot about anything( especially your righteous rant) except themselves. – they are all governed by self interests ( the purported moral code they subscribe is to keep everybody deceptively self righteous while they indulge in their hypocrisy and the spirit of mammon)

The masses are essentially dumb(gibberish in speech and thoughts) while the more vocal or intellectual are very self absorbed and none are able to relate to one another on acdeep level ( at the end of the day, their doors are all closed – take a look around your neighborhood) to one another unless self interests drive them out of their shell of fear and insecurities but never away from fears and insecurities.
You will be wasting your time with a typical Singaporean(essentially two stupid types – dumb sheep and certified clever scribes or…wolves – in spirit )

Absolutely agree. People only vote for their self interests. Since a lot are civil servants and have led lives of material success, they don’t care to vote oppo. They buy into that argument “what can oppo do for you?” Basically, they are fearful of losing it all. So the oppo needs to understand the underlying root causes of voter behavior and come up with a pitch.

When you hear oppo saying:”Vote democracy vote freedom”, voters are not interested. They are thinking:”if I vote you, can you people provide high paying jobs so that we can continue to live the lifestyle we are accustomed to?” So yeah, talk money. They’ll be all ears.
