Singapore is no longer a democracy

If you think about it, for all intents and purposes, Singapore is no longer a democracy.

PAP controls parliament and says that laws it creates will not be used on the government, but only against Singaporeans.

TV, newspapers and radio are state-controlled, and independent media and bloggers have been sued, charged, harassed and jailed.

Academics have felt threatened and lost their jobs, and activists and academics alike have had to leave Singapore to work in other countries.

There is only one little park Singaporeans can protest at, and activists who have done so, have been investigated, charged and currently face potential jail terms.

And referendums have never been held since Singapore’s so-called independence.

The government has been so brazen as to change the laws for the presidential election, to install their own president without an election.

If you think about it, the only thing left that makes Singapore “look” like a democracy is that one vote you have during the election.

There is only one threat left standing for the PAP in its ability to safely secure their rule indeterminately, and that is the uncertainty of your vote.

Logically thinking, I expect the government to change the rules after the next election, so that even as votes are allowed, their power will still be secured.

It might be a version of Hong Kong or Thailand where certain seats are allocated and appointed without a vote, and the rest of the seats available for voting would not be expected to upset their rule.

Or it might be as simple as using electronic voting where data is controlled by them.

I won’t put it beyond them to do something like this having seen how brazen they change the rules of the game for the presidential election, and how they ramped the fake news law down everyone’s throats.

Either way, it is clear Singapore is no longer a democracy, and your vote right now, is the only thing that matters.

You need to treat your vote previously, and make your vote count at the next election, before you lose it.

ive got a bad feeling that even our one precious vote may be “in danger of being sabotaged” like Roy pointed out ways they can achieve this.
they may already be planning God knows how many obstacles in ours, as well as the alternative parties’ paths.
why are they doing all this? havent they earned enough to last few generations?
cant we live in peace sharing the fruits of our labour?

  • Regime change is the solution:

Singapore has never been a real democracy with basic freedoms and a free press. POFMA shows PAP’s desperation because it has failed Singaporeans and is afraid of being thrown out at the coming GE.

BTW. HDB flats will be worth ZERO at the end of the lease. Asset enhancement schemes like HIP1 and HIP2 will not make any difference. These will just temporarily enhance the value of the flat like repainting an old car. In the end, it will still be worth zero. HDB’s Lease Buyback Scheme proves HDB flats are depreciating assets. If this is not true the Government will demand this post be deleted. But it won’t because it is the truth.

If we still vote for PAP, it would think we don’t even want election, since we have already given up our freedom of expression.

As what DPM Heng said; Opposition is of no use. So why the need for election. PAP will rule permanently if we don’t value our votes this GE.

Democracy was never ever man’s salvation so anyone, especially proponents of hope in democracy from the elite class, who champions and points towards democratic process in achieving reform or change is another heavy/over weight numbskull in social, political and media affairs.

Given a choice/vote ( once every five years is ridiculous to make changes for 5 years of damages done which after each election repeats with fresh corruption or wrongs ) for the people to choose between @money and @truth/justice, and we all know where the chip is going to fall on – over your dead body!

Nobody really gives a hoot about anyone when their fat bank account grants their insecurities/induced fears a security blanket to shut their doors on neighbours faces or your ugly(singaporean) face.

The greatest is love and under the PAP self righteous government( who sits as God to be the arbitrator of truth), there is no love for one another(sorry, you are deluded)

Money(your insecurities and fears) over others dead body, so what grand vote for change are you talking about when the choice has already been made or forced on most people?

You barked up the wrong tree!

  • Never was a democracy:

When you look at Singapore history critically, Singapore was never a democracy.

Example. How did we lose Singapore in 1963?
Voters were “given a choice” of merger A, merger B or merger C. There was no choice of no merger!

Imagine a girl given a choice of marriage A, marriage B or marriage C to the same guy!

Elections alone does not make a democracy. North Korean has elections.

The list is too long to put here. Go look around yourself with an open eye.

Singapore also not signatory to Human Rights or something like that. Is it true?

  • Haigen-Diaz:

The latest headlines in HK: ‘Pro-Democracy clashes with Pro-Government camp at Hong Kong’s legislature over controversial extradition bill.’ That is Rough, but It’s Democracy.

Democracy begins with one great truth: the infinite dignity of individual men and women. Should one believe in “the infinite dignity of Singaporeans?” Do the 70% posses such dignity?” It would be a great error to think of and teach democracy as a procedural or political system….It is a matter of ‘spiritual and moral possession.’

Our ‘one party democracy’ is starting to look like a very troubled system. One egregious example is POFMA which is unsustainable if there is no fair, just and equitable distribution of that Rule of Law. This is precisely where we are failing and failing miserably, led by a Party lacking in dignity and lacking in any respect whatsoever for the dignity of our people. That kind of apathy and ignorance strengthen the clout of our ‘Know-Nothing’ incumbent MPs shown in Parliament during the recent debate. Our Opposition did a great job.

Whether we have a two-party duopoly or a “one party democracy,” we do not have the kind of representative democracy that encourages, new ideas, innovation, or good leaders. Politics may be the noblest of all arts, which makes all other arts possible – as Aristotle said. But recent years have shown how vicious politics has become in this little “red dot”. If this yawning imbalance is not corrected, we are doomed.

It makes us wonder why they yet changed the constitution to abolish elections and legistlate a 1-party rule without opportunity for competition. Like a China model.
Sg can copy china model if lacking creatvkity.

比这个更糟糕的吗? Yes of course. When a few hundreds “人民代表“ clapped in unison like battery operated robot bunnies or monkey.

The fundamental core of democracy is to allow even 同一阵营的人 to have 不同的看法.
