Allow foreign spouses to live in Singapore as home makers

I think there is an unspoken policy that foreign spouses should be well educated and able to work in Singapore and earn a high income.

This is why the low income locals are not able to marry a foreign spouse and bring them to live in Singapore.

I think that this policy is short sighted. It does not recognize the value of home makers. If the foreign spouse is prepared to be a home maker and to raise two or three children, they can be “contributing” to the economy in a productive way.

Many local girls prefer to work. This is why the birth rate in Singapore is among the lowest in the world.

If the foreign spouses are prepared to be home makers, they can help to increase the birth rate.

With more children, there will be a demand for teachers, child care minders, nurses, transport workers, doctors and other occupations. The economy will become more vibrant.

  • A very shameful aspect of Sg:

Singapore has a very shameful aspect that nobody wants to talk about.
The government has been and is tearing families apart, for many decades. Thousands of families. Perhaps tens of thousands.

Work permit holders cannot marry Singaporeans. If they want to, they will be immediately kicked out of Singapore, and blacklisted forever and ever. This is Singapore’s black fairy tales of foreigner romance.

JBJ brought this up once. But nobody care.

Mr Tan, you want to look into this? But don’t expect to win any votes. Nobody care.

    From google:
If you are a current or former Work Permit holder who wishes to marry a Singapore citizen or permanent resident (PR), you must seek approval from MOM . However, you do not have to apply for approval if you: Do not hold a Work Permit (e.g. you are an S Pass or Employment Pass holder).
As a Work Permit holder, how do I apply for approval to marry a …

  • Fair Comment:

Tan Kin Lian is wrong on this issue. The Government has been very lenient and very helpful on foreign spouses.

    1) Foreign spouses can apply for Long Term Visit Pass which is rather easy to obtain.
    2) If you are holding a Long-Term Visit Pass (LTVP or LTVP+) issued by ICA, you can work in Singapore if you get a Letter of Consent ( LOC ). You first need to find a job in Singapore and get the employer to apply for an LOC for you.

There must be laws and these ICA laws on Foreign spouses had been very helpful towards helping a family with a foreign spouse form a happy family. You cant allow someone who don’t work get a foreign wife. If the guy’s income is too low, is it fair for the guy to marry a wife and unable to support the family. If you agree $2k is the lowest we think is needed to support a foreign wife, the ICA criteria is supportive of wage level for a LTVP from my experience myself and other friends. How low is the low income Tan Kin Lian talking about. Don’t let the foreign wife suffer and be a Singapore baby machine.

This is not true. Work permit holders have to apply to the MOM for approval to marry and upon approval, to ROM to marry. That approval from MOM is needed. Many people does not know this or check it out with work permit department.

$G girls always want to marry Ang Moh or well-to-do FT. This is the way out of $G for many of them to foreign countries and abetter life.

$G boys – what have they to offer? Most with low paying jobs and no money by the time they reach 40. How many can can claim they are as well off as FT or can return to their home countries and live passably well there?

Easy for most well-paid FT to get permission from MOM. Why not? Only the road sweeper will be rejected. But then again which girl wants them? Unless they want to end up in a water tank somewhere.

What Mr Tan stated in not true, I have seen educated men married lowly educated foreign women as housewife. The key is to satisfy the authorities requirements.

We should count our blessings that Mr Tan is not voted in. Is he adding liabilities to Singapore with his level of perception ability?

You are correct. This practice is outdated. In the past I think our govt don’t want the Malaysian girls to come to Singapore to work but ultimate aim is to find a Singapore man to marry to settle here. I also heard this is relaxed after somebody son married someone from Penang.

    NAIVE!!!

Your husband is poor, has low education credentials. You, the charboh-lang, sama-sama. What do you do after you cum? Especially when a while later stage, you had bred like a rabbit and have more bunny mouths to feed than an NBA team??

Turn to your jiaxiang-jiemei/compatriot-sisters to ask for lobangs and soon end up as a streetwalker in Geylang (if PRC farmgirl) or Joo Chiat (mini-Saigone) orOrchard Towers (if pinay, like $50/session Maria from Iloco Norte)!

But that’s what probably Kinlian wants, so that there are more Pan-sluts closer to home, in fact right at home here, for richer-than-average lowly millionaires like him to go do his usual zhuge-liang antics (since he has run out of places to stick his humsup-cheesow/teekor-hands on unsuspecting young female workers like during 75 Bras Basah days!).

  • Perspective:

Is there a guide or statistic done on where the poverty line or subsistence level is for different family sizes? E.g. 2-person, 3-person, 4-person household, etc. If it is hard for 2-income family to cope with the cost of living, how much harder would it be for a low single-income family. Harder still, if the husband has to take care of his aged parents, unless there are other siblings who can chip in. However if the wife can work from home doing sewing, baby-sitting, or ironing clothes, she may be able to contribute a little to the family income.

There is no need to apply to MOL for permit if PR, Employment pass holder and S Pass holder. Only work Permit holder and the government want to protect both sides in the marriage. This is the case in almost every country. You question about statistics is not relevant.
