A bad approach to create a retail electricity market

An elderly woman who lived near me met me at the bus stop.

She said – Mr. Tan, I agree with what you wrote about the retail electricity supply. As an elderly person, I do not know what to do choose my electricity supplier. Why don’t the government just get Singapore Power to reduce the electricity price, instead of asking us to look for our supplier. I find life to be very complicated.

I assumed that she referred to my letter published in the Straits Times. I agreed with her.

At the shopping mall, I get many young people approaching me to sell electricity supply. I already signed for my contract – so I find these marketing approaches to be annoying, and the poor young marketeers are probably wasting their time.

I also read that some electricity suppliers are exiting the market, because it is too costly and too wasteful to be marketing the supply.

What a wasteful practice. What an incompetent government.

  • John Lim:

If you think carefully, the idea of competition among the various electricity suppliers is nonsense! All electricity suppliers “donate” their
electricity into the national grid. So how can you determine which supplier you want to choose? Put it in another way. You have 5 orange juice producers. They all pour their produce into a barrel. You scoop a cup from the barrel. Can you tell whose orange juice is in your cup?
Now here’s the scam. The barrel owner sells you $1 a cup. The only way the orange producers can be seen to be competitive is that they sell to the barrel owner at 50 cents or less a cup. And they can sell you at 90 cents a cup and still make a profit. Now, the question is, why would the barrel owner allow you to buy from the orange producers?? Anyone???

  • compare pap clown and us:

Why don’t the government just get Singapore Power to reduce the electricity price, …

    exactly.

although pap clown is not economics educated, pap heng is. unless stroke has damaged pap heng brain, he should know too many cooks in the kitchen spoil the soup. a simple brain already knows middlemen who do NOT generate electricity cannot sell cheaper than PUB unless PUB is over charging 70% sheep.

WE are not 70% sheep. WE don’t vote pap because we know pap entities think there is nothing wrong in making monopoly money.

but ffff the 70% sheep. because of 70% sheep stupidity, we suffer. otherwise PUB price to any of the retailers could have been straight given to us so we no need to contract with any waste of time middlemen and yet save money. but, ffff pap. pap says unless you get cheated by electricity middlemen you pay higher to PUB who is able to sell lower to electricity middlemen and yet make money.

ffff also tan kin lian who said he signed contract. ffff. he is brainless. after all, electricity middlemen do NOT generate electricity. they buy and resell. if they buy and resell and can still make money, then the system is CORRUPT. tan kin lian by signing contract shows 1st he is stupid and 2nd he agrees with the corruption. no wonder Singaporeans avoided him during PE.

rightly so since tan kin lian has no ffffing brain or moral responsibility to NOT sign contract and give legitimacy to the electricity tariff scam.

  • Why sell the power plants?:

The several major power plants have all been sold to foreigner ownership.

Many zombies still oblivious till today although it has been so many years already.

We heard people say, if profitable , They would have taken up the business.

Why were those power plants sold of profitable?

Why now so many electricity retailers and power plants doing the retailing?

If we use our brains instead of our aNUS,
we might be able to ask :

    1. Is electricity tariff gonna keep going up?

    2. Why so many retailers sharing a small pie?

3.How Many of these will close shop eventually? Merger?

    I hereby Prophecise :
    1. There will be much less retailers left and some will either close shop or be bought.

    2. Electric tariff will go higher and higher.

Singaporeans accept everything without using their brains. Without wanting to know the secrets.
    They basing on believing, trust.
One day, I will be right because they will be wrong and regret only to find it’s too late. Something’s got to give when you never question and always accepted everything.

All that will be left – once bona-fide electricity players get played out – is an illusion of choice. You pay the government either way.

Why do this? To raise tariffs or pretend that there is competition that fights for market share. Also employ more people in government (to get higher bonus).

Vietnam’s economy could be bigger than Singapore’s by 2029, says DBS Bank Ltd.

“If it can sustain that pace of growth, the Vietnam economy will be bigger than the size of the Singapore economy in ten years’ time,” Singapore-based economist Irvin Seah said in a research note Tuesday.

So those who still in their la-la land, please wake up. We need a good G who is not greedy thinking of Millions of dollar but to improve our economy. Don’t grow our GDP by importing the 3rd world citizen.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IT IS NOT A BAIT-AND-SWITCH sweetheart deal? After two years, the retailers raised their rates sky high and consumers and CANNOT RETURN TO SP who,by then, changed the rule of “goods sold not returnable” policy.

You are thus trapped wth SP selling expensively to electricity retailers who then pass on the increased tariffs to the customers – ONE WAY AND UP UP UP FAST.

HAS SP GUARANTEE TO THOSE WHO SWITCH TO ELECTRICITY RETAILERS THIS “BUY BACK GUARANTEE” OF CUSTOMERS’ ACCOUNT if the retailers raised tariffs later?

So many retailers competing with cheaper tariffs offer, I don’t believe any thinking mind will think they are all SANTA CLAUS coming to town.

  • What a "big" idea" ?:

    Insights into stupidity:

Anything the Govt touches become convoluted . . .?

    -
All electricity providers must have Customer Service personnels, Marketing, etc.
    -

    Electricity is commodity.
    For commodity, only price talks.
    -
    Prediction –
There will be a consolidation of these “providers” -
leaving the big ones to scale their supply and operations.
Smaller outfits won’t have enuff to cover their operational costs.

    -

    A better approach –
Energy Market Authority or Singapore Power conducts 6-12m Auction to supply them electricity -
    just pick the lowest price,
    pass the savings to consumers.
    -
Hmm, wonder who is this AristoCAT who hatched idea of electricity “liberalization” :)

  • Reason Why -- Increase GDP:

I think the reason is the same as why they start to dig up all the roads to change cables and pipes even though these are not due for replacement. Cannot be all the cables and the pipes got damaged all at the same time.

Same with suddenly appointing so many government companies to resell electricity from PUB.

More business transactions means more business activities mean more GDP means more bonus for the Ministers and senior civil servants. In the meantime more foreign investors got conned thinking that our GDP is very high.

Thank You, bro. Well summarized. Agree.

All that needs to happen, to really help citizens, is for SP to sell electricity at the rate it is selling to the retailers.

If SP as it is now can sell to retailers and the retailers can still make S$ then SP is overcharging citizens pure and simple.

In this case, where is the commission in charge of monopolistic practices? Where since SP is pap, and the commission in charge of monopolistic practices is pap, and the victim is 70% sheep, nothing is going to happen since every pap setup believes in the pap mantra, what is wrong with making S$ from 70% sheep.

Hope Singapore don’t go down this path. In Australia energy prices have skyrocketed because of too many retailers in the market. We pay as much as A$500 per month even when trying to conserve energy use strictly. Trying to jump from one retailer to another is no use because they intially seduce you with discount but after a year, prices are back to high rate. Because of this we have to be alert to what they are charging with every monthly bill. These retailers known that not everyone will have time to scrutinise their bills monthly.
