Democratic systems are falling apart

Many countries with democratic constitutions follow the American or the UK system.

Both systems seem to be falling apart.

Here are my views.

America believe in the system of separation of powers between the executive, legislative and judicial branches.

Often, the executive and legislative branches comes under different political parties. This has led to grid-lock, i.e. inability for the government to decide.

At present, we have a president (executive branch) and his cabinet acting in conflict with the congress (including the people from his own party).

This shows the flaw in the American system of separation of powers.

The parliamentary system in the UK is not doing well either. Parliament cannot agree on the terms of their departure from the European Union (Brexit).

The leadership in democratic countries is in crisis. Democracy is falling apart. We need reform.

  • Harder Truths:

last time I looked, ‘good’ communism is still a very long way below ‘bad’ democracy.

Which is why no one with a British or American passport will want to trade it for an $G one.

Don’t take my word for it Kin Lian – go and ask the FT living here. Just because they come here for money does not mean they prefer communism.

By the way – are you still taking your medication?

    Reform is the right word.
A medicine can save you life but comes with side effects.
We do not say because of imperfections we say the medicine is bad.
Medicine is a work-in-progress just like democracy.

Because usa democracy has flaws, does it mean usa should adopt dictatorship like china?

Without election, a system can be called a dictatorship.

Dictatorship need not be bad. But it too has a flaw. Humans have flaws. Humans become corrupt when given absolute power proven by emperor systems.

We should have a authoritarian system slowly replaced by a democracy. Its just like England made the queen with no power. England used to be monarchy.

Monarchy is a form of dictatorship.
If the dict is good you lucky.
But dicts die. Old dicts die. When new dicy takes over , its like a box of chocolate. You wont know how your son will turn out. Dishonorable son or filial son?

Democracy gives the people a way to overthrow a bad govt.
But to effect this, they need to be treated fairly.
But many countries Rule By Law to take away this power from them.
This alone proves this leader has ambition to be ruthless.

So, Dictatorship can be great. But the chance that you will not get a bad leader in future is as high chance as a human can be corrupted given absolute power

Conclusion, like medicine, just because medicine is flawed does not mean you amputate the leg as you do not want to cure yourself the leg by taking the medicine containing side effects.

    Its work-in-progress.

    Dictatorship is flawed.
    Usa democracy is flawed.

it is not true at all.

if there is any failure, it is due to public media in these countries taking sides in their reporting which result in seeming but false failures.

in fact, both these systems have the right check and balance in place to stop any rogue from abusing power such as appointing wife to obscenely paid under performance. in fact, if Singapore has either system, truly, current parleement approved rot via nepotism cronyism corruption would not have taken place at all, and if it has taken place, the police bank negara agc cpib would have done the necessary.

but as things stand, it is not. it is the Singapore kind of pliant parleementary system that has failed, big time.

Dynastic system, Communism, Dictator/totalitarian system etc. all failed. Now Democratic system and Socialism too are failing but at least it has outlived all other systems.
There are countries which form policies based on outcomes of referendums. How about a political systems base on just referendums. Let the citizens/peasants decide what they want e.g. “Ho Ching needs to disclose income?” “LHL needs to be investigated for abuse of power?” etc. If referendum says ‘yes’ then process is immediately initiated independently. No party involvement whatsoever to ensure fair and just.

    Dear Mr Tan,

Reference to your posting, I find that you are either lacking in good and reliable network, or the laziness in performing detailed research rather than copy and paste what you have read on public domains. To read between the lines, it also seems that your zeal to presidential seat on this land have not faded over the years, and I respect your persistence (but not your objectives and intents).

Please allow me to provide your goodself a glimpse into your posting above :

The US Democracy is not failing as it seems. Over time, elected officials aligned themselves with Businesses supporting their election campaign rather than to the people voted them into congress. News outlets are allowed to spurt falsehoods and also aligning themselves with political parties. Basically, a deterioration of journalism thru financial perks using Tea Parties.
Bottomline, the liberation of the US Constitutions and Laws on free speech and Human Rights has somehow been abuse by the ‘Dark Side’. A serious fine tuning is on the way, on gaps on these exploited Laws which actions by the House of Senators and Federal Judges. Democracy is not Failing. Its being exploited by the ones voted into office.
The UK system, is just about the same or worst, as so many officials voted in have aligned themselves with so many different Agendas. The situation was aggravated with a high number of Lords/Earls/Dukes/etc in office without the needs to be voted in and not doing their job to moderate the government for the people, but only their own interests.

The people paid for BBC is not helping too.

I guess the root of the problem is being paid too much where greed sets in. While its not wrong to pay handsomely to people that work very hard and provide results that they are employed for, Democracy system should not allow the people elected into office to control independent Audits on the people that is in office. This independent Auditing Branch should be elected every 2 years by the people and Annual Audit Report should be publish for the people to see.
Our current system like many, is flawed.

Every political systembis flawed. But why?
To be clearer, its due to the EXECUTION or Implementation of the system.

Ideologically, all the systems have their virtues. Communism can also be good. But last time one old dingdong equated it with evil and many believed him because they dont use their brains. They base on believing.

I have mentioned on TRE several times , Even Dictatorship can be a great system. But such a system eventually fails because as i said, its not the concept but the Implementation.

A dictatorship can be good to its people of the leader is really good. But this is like almost impossible because of Human Nature.

Democracy in concept is great but difficult to implement. After getting power how will the leader allow and welcome competition if that threatens his rule?

Before getting power, a Politician will sell democracy to voters.
    Its very juicy.
After getting power, one old banana changed hos farking mind because he worry of losing at elections and so the paranoid maniac destroyed many of his competitors including some of his ex colleagues

I would say, the issue is partly the People. It takes two hands to clap.
If the people COW to Fear,
If the people do not understand why Democracy and People Power is necessary for the self-interest of themselves, as a power to change regime if the regime fails, then Democracy cannot work.
If the people can be bribed like in malaysia and indonesia etc, democracy cannot work.

I would say the most effort and responsibility has to come from the people.
Given Power and your mandate, garments may use this to control you.

“At present, we have a president (executive branch) and his cabinet acting in conflict with the congress (including the people from his own party)”

Mr Trump is not acting in conflict with Congress. It should be one half of congress ie the House of Representatives controlled by the Democratic Party that is acting in conflict against Mr Trump & were supported by a only very small number of Mr Trump’s own party(Republican) members. Republicans control the Senate part of congress.
Mr Trump wants to built a long wall at the southern border with Mexico because thousands of illegal immigrants are entering USA daily but the Democratic controlled House of Representative refused to fund the effect saying that building the wall is immoral. Another much recent example, when Mr Trump’s HUD(Housing Urban Dev) Minister Ben Carson wanted to progressively remove illegal immigrants from enjoying public housing and replace them with USA Citizens, he was again accused by members of the House of Representatives of being cruel and unsympathetic. The House of Representative part of congress has obstructed Mr Trump every step of the way. Under Mr Trump, America’s economy has improved and unemployment level reduced. Under Mr Trump’s urging, other western countries have increased their defence spending rather than to depend on the generosity of the USA which was the case in the past before Mr Trump became President. In trade, Mr Trump has been trying to level the playing field with China and now Japan. I read somewhere India would be next. Also Mr Trump has managed to persuade many companies like Carrier for example to stay in America and provide JOBS JOBS JOBS for the American people, such an effort which former President Obama said would require Mr Trump to have a magic wand.
I like Mr Trump’s America Citizen First Policy such as in security, Housing and JOBS JOBS JOBS. Mr Trump has been making many right moves but unfortunately the Democratic controlled House of Representative had been acting in conflict with Mr Trump since the day he took office. I just want to point out who are the bad guys. Of course, this is only my opinion.

Democracy as a concept has not failed.

No country has perfected Democracy because the Ruler will try not to give people power because they need to control the people.

So, DEMOCRACY IN PRACTICE needs a Reform.

  • Dictatorship Democracy:

    Hi Tan Kin Lian

    I beg to differ.
    Democracy falling apart?

There are two ways to look at it :

    1. Layman loosely speaking way. Loosely speaking, using the vagueness inherent in languages, english in this case, Yes , Democracy is falling apart. Language is an art and not Exact. Its not science. One can talk rubbish and make it sound great.

So, one can anyhow hamtam and try to fool people that democracy is falling apart. Chwee Gong Lampar Song.

    2. Another way to look at it is Scientifically. I could argue that Democracy has Never been practiced properly or fully by any country. So it never failed yet. It never failed before.

Democracy has never been fully practised properly because no govt would want the People to Have Power. They will tweak the laws conjuring excuses for new laws meant to reduce people power under the disguise of doing the people good.

To put it bluntly and simply, proper democracy is :

    1. People must have real Power and ensure the govt is the Servant serving the masters the People. No country has been able to achieve this yet. As i said, govt has power. They will use it to reduce people power even in USA.

    2. The People must not be threatened by the govt. But so many countries the citizenry are threatened by their govt. South east Asia has one such example.

    3. A Democracy is not just a name. The name means nothing. Eg. The Democratic republic of North Korea. You start to get my point.
In other words, a Democracy is true only if the People feel they live in a democracy and world must also feel that this country is a democracy.

A country, lets call it likapore , can claim or call itself the Democratic Republic of the Longan Durian Rambutan.
But it is Not a Democracy when its people feel that it is not a democracy. No people power , threatened and under duress, harassed , persecuted, lack of basic human freedom .

Feel free to rebut. I welcome a debate.

The 民主 in 民主国家 is putting 人民 as 主人. It is not 国主家民.

The only purpose of 民主国家 is for the 人民.

The only purpose of a 领导 in a 民主国家, is to first and foremost ensure 人民 have 好日子.

There can be no meaning to have a 国家 if it is not for the 人民.

There is no purpose to have a 国家 when it is 对国家有利 but 对人民不利.

When 主人人民不好, how can a 民主国家 be any 好?

Once 人民好, 国家 will naturally also 好.

可怕的认知:There is no purpose to have a 国家when it is 对国家有利but 对人民不利!

    只有小我,没有大我。只有自己的利益,没有国家的利益。为了自己的利益连国家都可以不要!

    真可怕,竟然有这样的人和我生活在同一个国度里!

There is not such thing as 大我 per se. 大我 is merely a collective term and it can only exist when many many many 小我 come together to form a “国家”.

    “国家利益”????????

    Can “国家” talk?
    Can “国家” feel?
    can “国家” eat?
    can “国家” think?
Can “国家” decides what is “利益”?

Isn’t 国家的利益 still must be determined by a handful of “小我”?

In 民主国家, isn’t this handful of “小我” elected by the greater number of other “小我”?

If this handful of “小我” exist only because of those greater number of other “小我”, and if this handful of “小我” is to determine 国家的利益, then isn’t it not correct to say 国家利益 is nothing more than a summation of all the 小我自己的利益?

Unless you think “国家” exists naturally and on its own right, like the oceans and mountains, then why is it not correct to say that “There is no purpose to have a 国家 when it is 对国家有利 but 对人民不利”?

Is it not actually even more 可怕 when the “国家”为了”利益”连人民都可以不要?

Otherwise, aren’t you just Sing Song Talk Cock?
