Learn from New York Times on getting subscriptions

I just subscribed to New York Times for $1 USD a week for 1 year. After 1 year, it increases to $3 a week. I am allowed to cancel the subscription at any time.

I find the weekly fee to be fair and attractive. That is why I signed.

I may continue after the first year at $3 a week, as I find it to be acceptable. However, I will decide later. It depends on how often I access the website.

The registration procedure is simple. I am allowed to sign in with Facebook, which I did. I pay using Paypal.

The entire process was completed within 1 minute.

I like to give this suggestion to Singapore Press Holdings. Follow the New York Times. You are likely to get more subscribers to your newspapers.

As a feedback. A week ago, I tried to sign up with Business Times. I gave up as I find the pricing (after the promotion period) to be too high. The registration process was complicated.

I am exceptionally aghast at our pseudo-elites & at the S’pore wealth class whom had achieved their riches & fortunes from PAP’s political-economy, their imposed crony capitalist eco-system. These peoples! – their intelligence *sic* not only lacked common sense but also I questioned their innate streets-smart capability to understand world trends & real-time developments.
Bear in mind, Tan Kin Lian once was the CEO of NTUC Insurance – a sizeable local Insurance company & probably number 1 insurance company in S’pore. Yet his post-retirement musing on social media shows him up as an extremely ignorant person much like a country bumpkin & an unsophisticated buffoon. How did this happen? Or is this a cross-sampling representative of the quality pseudo-elites we have in S’pore? Remember that Tan Kin Lian once stood for the Presidential Elections. And don’t forget the high financial hurdles & track-record requirement required of candidates are extremely onerous. If Tan Kin Lian is an example, I fear for S’pore’s future!
I remembered that immediately after Tan Kin Kian’s tenure & his “retirement”, his immediate successor at NTUC Insurance tried to reduce the commission structure of their direct sales force (they weren’t employees but contractors). There were much hoo-ha from their sales force team (some even crossed over to other insurance companies) but ultimately, the corporate management prevailed!
And I was told that in Australia & other developed economies, insurance product selling were done through the internet & through call-centres, no high cost direct sales team involved in the process!
In S’pore, I still see Insurance Agents still trying to sell their stuff at McDonalds & fast-food outlets, some even at air-cond food courts – thus depriving customers of a place to sit & eat!
S’pore, in truth, are still exceptionally backwards in the FIRE Economy (defined as Finance, Insurance & Real Estate). But unlike in the US where FIRE Economy grew exponentially (primarily at NYC & Chicago) at the expense of their manufacturing and export-based economy. The FIRE Economy in S’pore remained low-value, unproductive while the wealth management side & higher value services remained in the hands of the foreign talents.
In the US, share trading is done between computers operating using high frequency trading algorithms on dedicated high speed connections. And in S’pore, there are still many remisiers who are earning less than toilet cleaners.
The US MainStream Mass Media are facing existential issues. Smart US people no longer believe in the stuff that the news reporting agencies push out into public sphere. Why is Tan Kin Lian still buying BS from the MSM?

    @ Rabble-rouser

By now, we should be convienced that meritocracy at top level is a BIG lie. It only make sense at the common level, the peasant level. Many people at the top achieved that mostly not by what they know but who they know.

Put it this way, why would one kept advertising something if it is true? Some says to create awareness. Some says to educate. Some says good thing should not go unnoticed…. i say bullshit. Yes, mostly to bullshit us.

Let’s say a famous minced pork mee is so nice and yummy, how does it became famous in the first place? Did they spend full page ad cost on ST to advertise? Did they employed IBs to sing choirs? Or did they use some SM or ESM or SESM to educate us?

We are adults but most of us did not grow much with our intellect and brain cells. Don’t mistaken me, crook politicians love brain-dead zombies. It is not to their interest that we are a little smarter. Furthermore, if one gets into the circle, one does not need much brain. He/she just need to sell his/her soul to follow, and the remuneration will constantly comes in. The irony part is: in a society, people pay tax to get hypnotized.

aiyoh. what to do ? people (e.g finance, real estate, insurance even banking) need to work for survival lar.

if everything is to be mechanized, why the need to have 6.9m or 10m open-leg policy (contradiction right) ? look at the many FTs (or FTs turned sinkies to be proudly called sinkies) occupying the many positions even in finance, real estate and insurance sector – and the many so called-talented chat-ba-lang normal positions ?

does any one really believe that mechanisation can create net job openings (employment) ? than the huge number than it displaces ?

mike: By now, we should be convienced that meritocracy at top level is a BIG lie. It only make sense at the common level, the peasant level. Many people at the top achieved that mostly not by what they know but who they know.

There is often a very fine line between an over-inflated ego, like Tan Kin Lian’s, and a overpowering sense of insecurity which makes him even more susceptible to toadying, stroking and flattery, even when it is transparent to the point of being ridiculed.

We are not really talking about merit but talking about manners and morality. We are talking about the concentration of arrogance in the hands of a few and the lack of wealth (and along with it, power) in the empty hands of the vast majority of human being.

Like many politicians, Tan Kin Lian is prone to fealty, adoration and worship by sycophants and enablers. That does not make him unique among those in his present profession. What does make him unique is the extent to which he willingly disowns reality, ignores facts and display his own utterances, generally in short order, relying on others’ public displays of affection to massage his ego.

Our current society is more aptly characterized as one in which a meritocrat-meretricious alliance create self-serving rules to the detriment of nearly everyone else, the former paying the latter to divide and conquer the public so they are too distracted to notice that they are being dupe. My personal gripes against meritocracy are that it tends to be one-dimensional and arbitrarily frozen in time. with the addition of kabuki elections.

    @ Mike:
For S’pore, the pyschological conditioning & indoctrination starts from birth as parents “hothouse” their babies to study the alphabet & numbers. Before even they enter school, success had become immense with investments in competitive pre-school & kindergarten.
Formal Education became Ivan Pavlov’s puppy salivating conditioning mechanism – high academic marks beget subsequent rewards. Children’s innate ability to expand their intelligence replaced by systemic conditioning. To memorise “given” & approved source materials, then regurgitate them to score high exam marks. Tan Kin Kian’s belief in MSM news & his willingness to pay is evidence. The expanded world is shut out but S’poreans can digest only the approved portions. It is our weakness, our Achilles Heel.
Meritocracy Policy is a high benchmarking policy for people to follow their systemic conditioning. But it has a 5%-10% success rate. Ultimately, 90%-95% of the population would have unfulfilled expectations given the school streaming mechanism, elite vs neighbourhood schools conundrum & numerous hurdles to the Meritocratic selection process. It is ultimately a form of absolute control.
Beyond education, there are also imposed censorship, banned reading, AV materials & the State-controlled propaganda-spewing MSM; tools to further reduce innate intelligence & control adults’ minds.
Why S’pore is failing badly is that the Elitist core had developed an immunity against failure (ie. No Accountability nor Performance orientation). Instead they closed ranks (herd mentality) & developed a groupthink mechanism to rebut/stop criticisms. They also developed increasing expectations for Privilege & Entitlement. This comes at a time when the Knowledge Economy triggers widespread disruption, discontinuity & wealth inequalities.
And when a country needs more highly educated minds to meet this forward challenge, S’pore politicians “pooh-pah” the importance for a degree saying that it is not a requirement for success & that S’pore might even have a non-graduate as a future PM.
S’pore prodigious use of benchmarks & rankings mechanism provide a useful purpose to shift people’s attention towards meaningless or artificial “success” tools against a broad basedcmass prosperity.
The Ministerial Salaries benchmarked to top corporate & banking CEOs’ salaries & bonuses is an exanple. Critics derided this benchmark being “artificial” as corporate & banking eco-system are harsher & careers short-term than politicians. People are being fooled!

@ everything is to be mechanised:
FIRE Economy (Finance, Insurance & Real Estate) needs a healthy General Economy (ie. Manufacturing, Trade & General Services type economy) in order to work. If the General Economy is not growing & contracts, FIRE Economy shrinks by a larger proportion. In addition, FIRE Economy jobs are extremely vulnerable to mechanisation given current technological advancements – automation & computer activated voice algos for insurance & investment call-centres, robotic & computer activated voice commands algos for stock broking, automated real estate listing & algo search & matching, etc. Mechanisation in this type of economy kills jobs in the thousands & displaces many more permanently.
Thus the 6.9 million or even 10 million open-leg population growth policy look exceptionally weak & a non-starter. Only Fools believe in it!
