Exempt essential products from GST

Many people are prepared to continue with GST, but they like essential products to be exempted. This is not as easy as it appears.

What are the essential products? I suspect that they like these products to be exempted from GST.

a) food, milk, etc
b) medicine and medical expenses
c) school books and other school expenses
d) public transport
e) utilities, such as water, electricity, gas

Maybe there are other categories.

Maybe, it is better to ask – what category of products should be taxed heavily? Here are the likely products:

a) cars
b) investment property, exclude the primary home
c) luxury goods, such as handbags, branded watches
d) cigarettes, tobacco, liquor

Surely, these items are already adequately taxed, without GST. Maybe the tax can be increased?

How about extending the tax to the following, which are now exempted from GST and other taxes?

a) plastic products that are harmful to the environment
b) entertainment
c) stock market profit

I want to really explain my point about GST. If we exempt essential products from GST, there is really no need for GST at all.

The products that need to be taxed are already being taxed directly and not through GST. If a higher rate of tax should be collected, it can be done directly. Some of the items that are not taxed now could be added to the direct taxes.

If there is a need to raise additional taxes, it is better to increase the rate of tax on high incomes, e.g. income above $100,000 a year. These wealthy people can afford it.

I want the people who like to see GST being exempted from essential products to join me in asking for the total abolishing of GST and to replace with direct tax on specific products and an increase in tax on income above $100,000.

If we abolish GST, we can save on the cost, now incurred by GST, to collect GST. This cost is added to the prices paid by consumers, on top of GST itself.

  • ju tax ju shiok ju song:

    by right hor , actually good to have one flat tax (low one of course) as it is easier to administrate rather than variable tax tiers for different categories ? low gst rate will not burden the poor as much than a higher gst rate for basic essentials ?

    however the white monkey idiots got too carried away and it seems like they ju tax ju shiok ju song (3% to 4% and then to 5% and then to 7%) and now want to increase to 9% ?

    funny hor , when sinkie land last time (decades back) not so rich, gst was low hor ? now larger population and tax base, gst need to up hor from 7% to 9% ?

    now where did it go wrong for the white monkey idiots leh ? it it bigger population base entail more expenditure per capita than a smaller population ?
    if that is the case , why did the white idiots have open-leg policy planning for 6.9m or 10m or 15m hor & their white idiotic plp fans are propagating it so much hor ?

    How about some NEW taxes? Like these for example:

    1: Remittance tax. To be imposed on S & E-pass holders. For every $10/- remitted, the tax rate increases by 10% so that if they remit $100/- they pay 100% tax, if they remit $1000/- they pay 1000% tax. Work permit holders exempted as they do jobs locals don’t want

    2: Employment pass tax. For every S-pass holder, the employer pays 25% of the employee’s salary, for every E-pass holder they pay 50%. Implement these first two taxes and watch how quickly locals get their jobs back

    3: Talk cock tax. Of special interest to both tkl & gms, because now every time they post nonsense online they’ll pay 25% of the value of their houses. Watch how quickly these two idiots learn to shut up and finally give us the peace we want

    5: Familee tax. Since members of the familee and natural aristocrats, it’s only fair they pay for the privilege

    So, how about these new taxes?

    Oops, I overlook item 4, which is tenancy tax. Non-citizens including PRs can have as many tenants in their flats as they want, but they will have to pay 50% tax on the value of their flat for every tenant they take in

    Implement 1, 2 & 4, and watch how quickly capital outflow from the country stops

  • opposition dude:

    Mr Tan it’s very easy to say tax the rich higher but in reality it won’t happen you know why? All these good for nothing ministers and MPs want to hold on to as much of their wealth as they can so they will never agree to, say, a 35% income tax on themselves.

    And as for GST on items that is up for debate really. No one wants GST on anything they buy like in HK so what would GST be removed on then? If it was removed on food items then PAP would howl and cry that a lot less income was coming in. If it was removed on luxury items like Gucchi handbags or vehicles then PAP would also whine the same thing.

    What is most important is that a government seeks to reduce the cost of living on us and not do the same shit wayang about giving out GST vouchers or utilities rebates since they aren’t given frequently enough anyway. Suppose a new government did take over they might start to reduce GST and monitor the situation for 2 years before deciding if it can be further lowered.

  • Eddie:

    I am in favour of waiving GST on essential basic items like rice, milk, oil, public transport and medicines. Because GST is an every second or minute tax! And by taxing the basics/essentials it will spiral into tax on tax! Hence both rich and poor are taxed in one brush! Frankly the so-called GST vouchers are humbug; the govt gives you a chicken wing and take back a whole chicken scenario which most Singaporeans are being tricked especially prior to GEs. We must learn our lessons and VTO!
    We were stupidly told that the rich will enjoy the rice (free of tax) in the form of sushi, etc but do you think as we were stupidly told that the rich will consume more rice just because they are rich to buy more? Actually what the govt needs is to order or give instructions to have those basic items exempted from GST and it can be done; instead of giving Singaporeans stupid reasonings. If a big country like Malaysia can do such thing, little Singapore could easily do so.

  • Rabble-rouser:

    GST is a thoroughly regressive tax! – it penalizes the poor more severely than the rich. Food which is the biggest component for consumer spending; it is much higher for the poor than for the rich. Plus any shift in the increase of GST rates would bring about higher inflation through the land as manufacturers, wholesalers & suppliers adjust their prices upwards throughout the supply chain. Consumers would end up paying more that the published GST rate because of the varying price increases sought by layers of suppliers & wholesalers (supply chain) to offset their increase taxation & maintained their profit margins. It is called the Snowball Effect. One observation is eating out [hawkers, food courts & restaurants], the menu prices go up yet the quantity shrinks by 10%-15%.
    Something must be very wrong in the way where the S’pore govt is headed. They are increasing their revenue collection at a time when the external economy is not only deflating but faced significant risks when there are insurmountable debts, cash flow problems, shrinking demand & curtailed consumer spending. This will not only exacerbate the economic situation but also create huge problems for the masses & average wage earners. The biggest problem is the slowing MONEY VELOCITY in the economy. Govt revenues collected takes away precious liquidity from a faltering economy. A lot of domestic businesses have huge debts, high cost structures & obligations like manpower, inventory, rents, etc. All rely on significant cash flows to move forward. But S’pore not only have the GST increase but:
    * Electricity tariff increases + GST increase (Double Whammy);
    * Public Transportation fare increases; &
    * 30% water rate increases over 2 years.
    Unlike Western democratic economies where govt tax collection are offsetted through generous welfare payouts, there is no such thing in S’pore! So there are significant withdrawal of liquidity from the system & as a result, reduced money velocity to churn the economy through spending. Watch out for the following:
    * Sudden death of businesses & companies;
    * More SGX companies either suspended or facing bankruptcy notice;
    * Vacant spaces emerging in Malls, retail spaces, etc.
    * More individual bankruptcy listing on the newspapers;
    * More HDB flats splashed with paint with “owe$, pay$” graffiti;
    * More property foreclosures, property auction of foreclosed properties;
    * Stone cold demand for new property launches & shrinking resale volumes;
    * Number of car repossession increasing including PHV cars.
    The economic crunch will be something never seen before – similar in intensity to the 1998 Asian Currency Crisis but much worse than 2008 GFC. But unlike those two, the economic recovery might be way…
