Singaporean elderlies worse off than in other countries

Hello all fellow Singaporeans,

While I was around a mature estate one day, I was shocked to discover that many of the elderly poor were not foreign beggars, but elderly Singaporeans. I spoke to one of them and he shared with me his story where he was so poor he even took his wife’s wedding  ring to pawn.

Upon hearing this, I gave him $10 and he continued lamenting that his counter parts in other countries were better off  in retirement, as compared to Singaporeans. He told me he had to rely on collecting cardboard and empty cans just to make ends meet, and there are days he could barely find one can. His struggle does not end there, as he is currently estranged from his family, and have to find another place to sleep.

Upon hearing this, I find it shocking how we may have world class infrastructure, but in terms of providing societal support to our vulnerable poor, we still have not done well. This encounter made me realise we should all pay more attention to our senior citizens, and let’s all play a part by talking to some of them tonight.

Should double-check on such woe stories. For such an one may be saying the same to lots more after you in order to get a buck from one and all. Reminds me of those bygone days when you dined at some hawker spot, such as then “People’s Park”, and one “beggar” after another would try to spoil your meal just by refusing to move on. After you gave her a coin, some one else waiting aside would take her place, and on and on. And, also, you parked your car and some boy would “jaga kreta”. If you didn’t give him his coin, he scratched your car. I am not saying you assume this every time someone tries to sell you tissue paper nowadays. Please be compassionate, as you show in your post. But also wonder how we might not miss helping the poor without inadvertently encouraging the return of those bygone incidents when “begging” became a sort of blackmail.

The writer should move around and talk to 20 more cardboard and empty can collecting folks. He will be surprised that out of the 20 folks, 15 of them will tell him they do it for “EXERCISE” while the other 5 are doing for SURVIVAL!

  • A question of Ego:

“To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it up carefully with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or Coffin of your Selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, love will change; it will not be broken. Love will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To Love is to be Vulnerable.”

Any more grandfather or grandmother stories to tell us? Your stories are nothing new!
“Lazy” S’porean stories are a myth (a dime a dozen) when you consider the high cost of living in S’pore. Who do you think you’re bluffing to?
Gambling & womanizing again nothing new – they both cut across all stratas of society. Remember the guy @ APB Breweries who stole millions just to gamble overseas; recent case of Public Accountant stealing millions from clients or the Lawyer who ran road after stealing from his legal firm accounts only to be caught by M’sian police (more efficient than SPF who took over 12 years to catch a murderer).
Or Michael Palmer (“Tell Laura I love her”) or David Ong (cavorting with married grassroot member from his constituency – caught together at a public media F1 racing event). The list goes on & on. It is not only confined to those in the lower income class.

You’re absolutely wrong! They are relevant!
When the PAP came to power through providing affordable housing, plentiful jobs (from attracting foreign investments) & an affordable cost of living then, the social agreement were not to have any extensive social welfare mechanisms unlike what they had in the West but to provide social goods at affordable prices & to create jobs so that people may not starve. And the people agreed by voting for them continuously!
The mechanisms were Meritocracy Policy through educational achievements (social mobility); Anti-corruption laws (thus preventing abuse of power & achieving personal gains through authority) & a strong social order which handed the PAP a Mandate for overall control & economic management over to them.
Why is there now talk about public assistance to the needy? And why the system now have issues of “Michael, David or the public accountant” plaguing S’pore unlike in the past when LKY was at the helm & no such nonsense happened? If the people at the higher strata don’t conduct themselves with good behaviours, then they have no authority nor the respect to judge those down the line.
Meritocracy Policy is a scam for nepotism & cronies; social mobility is a scam when two-thirds of NUS medical school graduates come from 3 schools (RI, Hwa Chong JC & ACJC); massive monies were spent on educating foreigners for tertiary institutions instead of locals.
Also, why the crony capitalist mechanism had reared it’s ugly head. Driving S’pore’s cost of living to unimaginable proportions & create unaffordable situations. And why foreigners get the good jobs over locals in S’pore?
If you can’t see “the forest from the trees”, you shouldn’t be here commenting on TRE. What value do you bring here for discussion? Huh!

  • Third world thinking country:

Such a rich country with highest per capita income in the world but third world thinking when it comes to taking care of its elderly and vulnerable citizens.

My mother joined me in Canada years ago and while I do pay more in income taxes my mother gets over $1500 per month in old age pensions and benefits because she has no income. A chunk of that $1500 is sent back to Singapore to support her elderly, childless, unemployed sister who has no savings and gets a pittance from the Singapore government.

In a sense, the Canadian taxpayers is supporting a Singapore senior citizen because the Singapore government won’t.

First of all. About statistics. We know that PAP conceals and hides many kinds of data. They even cajole and threaten our media ppl not to publish truths that can affect their reputation.

So let’s not be a child believing everything PAP tells u. Be a thinking person. I know is hard coz brainwashing is fundamental habit of PAP and Communist Party. Not everyone can be independent minded, as LKY would say that’s the evolution of human genetics.

Even in physics, it is well known, that your observation is dependent on observer. In fact, science is inherently a human experience. So, to be fair to u, u have a good experience of PAP, whether this is part of your psychosis, innate ability to be a follower, a need for a Messiah etc, fair game.

I just want to share with u something called the constant speed of light. This sounds completely ‘normal’ liked how u trust PAP. But actually it is totally counter-intuitive.

The speed of light is 186,282 miles per second. However, for PAP believers they think that is what is meant by constant. Actually no.

The constant speed of light means that whatever your relative velocity to the light it appears same to all who observed it. What does that mean?

If u are chasing someone, as u run faster and if that person (light) is at constant speed, u would expect your distance to narrow. And a bystander should see u narrowing that gap.

But no matter how fast u run, the speed of light is moving away from u at 186,282 miles per second, and even though the bystander is stationary it also sees light moving from him at 186,282 miles per second. This is the constant speed of light.

Quote: “PAP had gone through different manager, from LKY, GCT, to LHL.”

So, PAP may have a bolt of light across their banner, but what is constant is their nature. Does not matter who is the manager. It is a nature founded upon a pseudo and fake elitism, a social Darwinism.

Another day we can talk about space-time, the universal blanket.
