IOT system to track children and dementia elderly

I like to propose an IOT (internet of things) system to track young children and elderly suffering from dementia.

We can install a network of 20,000 blue tooth beacon readers all over Singapore – at bus stops, HBD blocks and public buildings.

Families can buy the blue tooth beacons (cost about $5 to $15 each) and give to young children or dementia elderly. These beacons can be worn in a wrist band or attached to a bag. The battery in the beacon can last for 6 months or longer.

When the holder passes any of the 20,000 readers, the data can be stored in a cloud server.

The family can track the location of the beacon holder when the need arises, e.g. when a child or elderly is lost. This information is available only to the family and adequate safeguard can be implemented to prevent the data from being accessed illegally. In any case, the data is of no interest to third parties.

The cost of purchasing and installing the 20,000 readers should be about $3 million. However, the building and bus stop owners should be asked to install the readers and to provide the electrical connection.

There will also be the cost of providing the data connection for the 20,000 readers. At $5 per month, the cost will be $100,000 or $1.2 million a year.

Managers of shopping malls have the choice of installing additional readers in their malls to allow customers to find the location of family members.

The location of each beacon holder will be the last location that is read by a reader. The holder may have moved away from that location but has not been captured by another reader. He or she should be in the vicinity.

Would this be a useful Smart Nation project?

You backwards and outdated liao lo. These thingy already sold in China for a few bucks and no need even to spend money on setting up simi $3 million Bluetooth stations.

Those in China uses GPS and are sold for as cheapo as RMB $60 nia. It can be easily and cheapoly modified (if needed via the app) to suit Singapore since it uses ‘open’ global GPS satellites which are commonly used by in-vehicle GPS. Please refer to attached snapshot:

    TaoBao Snapshot

I have 3 of them, on my doggy, on my bicycle and on my electric motorbike. The app on my mobile tracks all their locations in real time, with optional alarm feature should they venture out of an assigned perimeter.

KL Tan; Are You sure GPS works under shelter? If it only detect “region” or reader location, who would pay for such device?. How far is each region reader and what transmission power is required and how long battery will last? Do those calculation and not let your imagination run wild.

TRE-Tech: I don’t know about the thingy but does it use the Telecommunication networks? What is the transmission power and how long the battery will last.?

    OR;

Why don’t you simply convert the HP by running custom apps to report coordinates back using the “EXISTING” Telecommunication Networks Stations OR using Apple find my iPhone which does the same, literally speaking. HP with its inbuilt transmitter and battery size can last longer. The right frame of mind is obviously using the existing Telecommunication Networks.

MUCH better idea. How about inventing a microchip that provides artificial intelligence and can be implanted in brains to either make someone talk sense or shut someone down if they try to talk nonsense. The first four guinea pigs would be tkl, gms, the pink moron & hc. Worst case scenario, all four will finally talk sense. Best case scenario, all four will be permanently sleeping because after shutting them down for saying or doing stupid things, the chip gets burned out from being overloaded by all the garbage ideas in their heads

Now HOW can this possibly be bad?

  • TKL is really backward:

Schools in China have created uniforms with tracking chips to monitor students’ whereabouts and stop them playing truant.

    https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/china-school-smart-uniforms-gps-surveillance-technology-guizhou-video-mobile-app-a8702161.html

more than 500 street cleaners employed by the Nanjing West Bank Environmental Service are required to wear smartwatches while working.

If the smartwatch detects a worker standing still for over 20 minutes, it sounds an alarm.

    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-04-17/chinese-companies-using-smartwatches-to-track-workers:-report/10985890

According to the Global Times, each device includes a QR code connected to an app that reveals the wearer’s photo, passport number, address, and name in both Chinese and English. The Islamic Association, which closely monitors and organizes the Hajj trips, claimed the devices make the trip safer for the user.

I thought existingly we already have those offenders / criminals wear on their legs one for tracking .

Just modify the existing ones instead of spending unnecessary costs.

That thingy “propaganda” as big as MIWs, featuring standby hours for days to weeks. The battery in one of those is rated 380mAh. It’s using the existing network which means phone card is needed.

Now assuming quiescent transmission in good signal location using average 1/4 watts, the battery will not last longer than 90 minutes approximately speaking. And, GPS don’t work in-door.

After that, children, dementia elderly, puppy, cats cannot be located no more.

Sounds good but gimmick toys. After a while, it’s in the bin or left aside.

  • Harder Truths:

Of course, this new technology will be used ONLY to track children and dementia patients right?

I mean, it would not be ‘democratic. to use it to follow opposition or other people that the government is not happy with right?

Of course not. Who would do such a bad thing? (Hee hee hee)

  • Reality Check:

This project is a waste of money. There are many systems or apps out in the market for this purpose. Many many years ago, i saw an American TV Network advertisement showing a tracking device installed inside a watch. If the child or maybe a dementia patient walks out of range, the Caregiver’s handphone will sound an alarm. And there was a recent case in Singapore where the boyfriend of a rape victim was able to trace her location through an app installed in her handpone. No need beacon. No need regular maintenance. No need spend millions. Maybe need to pay a small monthly subscription or one time membership fee. Maybe even free also. Mr Tan’s sugestion reminds me of a time long gone when we need to connect our handphone to a base station installed all over Singapore in order to make a phone call. Then, it was called a poor man’s handphone. Look what happen to it now? Do we want to go that path again. Also, in Singapore’s context, not many toddlers and old people go missing everyday that were never found or found to be victims of some heinous crimes.

  • @Kid talking kit sets Part 2

It is true that GPS don’t work indoor. So there are models which uses multiple mode of tracking, including base stations (mobile signal). The one on my car does just that and unless you are in a very very long tunnel, signal is not an issue.

As for the standby hours, there are those that are slightly bigger (size of a credit card) and uses batteries that are rated 3000mAh or more. Of course if you are those that are willing to take risk, it is not difficult to upgrade the batteries to 5000mAh mobile batteries.

For even cheaper alternative, one can install a mobile phone app that uses base stations and/or GPS to track location, its free. There are so many apps that can do that and some installed with WeChat can even dp real time navigation.

I am of course not saying that its the perfect solution, just that there are already these gadgets available with no need to built $3 million Bluetooth base stations.

  • Harder Truths:

This is not about the technology – this post from TKL is about making the practice COMPULSORY.

Things in $G are always made to serve government interests. Once the law or policy is out they can target whoever they want – not just oldies and children.

In Sweden they are already implanting people with microchips for certain jobs. It is true this is not new technology. This can also be used to track people if it becomes COMPULSORY.

We need to STOP the way these things are made to look harmless or everyone will be a walking GPS 24/7.
