Trust your common sense

We are seeing rapid technological changes. it is difficult to keep up with the advances. It is easy to be carried away by the amazement.

However, I like to suggest that we should hold on to our common sense. Do not let the amazement detract us from using our common sense.

Let me quote some examples.

For two years before the turn of the century, the experts were writing about the disaster to computer systems that will occur on the turn of the century. It was called the Y2K crisis. They said that many computer systems use only 2 characters for the year, so the year 2000 will become 0000. The computer would crash.

My common sense tells me that this is rubbish. Most computer systems already had 4 characters for the year. Even for those that did not, it would be quite easy to check if it would produce any error or if the system would crash.

In fact, it was possible to carry out a test by setting the computer to 1 minute before midnight of the turn of the century and see if anything happened one minute later.

Many big organizations paid tens of million dollars for consultants to fix the problem. These consultants became very rich.

Twenty years later, we have a strong interest in block chain. An expert explained the concept to me. My common sense told me that it was an inefficient way to handle processing. I refused to join the excitement.

After a few years and a lot of money that poured into block chain projects, I have not seen any significant success. Bitcoin and other crypto-currencies, that were operated on block chains, looked to me like a big ponzi scheme or speculative bubble.

I saw a video showing a conversation between the PM of Malaysia and a social robot. The PM asked a few difficult questions and the robot used AI to give the answers. It was amazing.

My common sense told me that it was not possible for any AI robot to be that smart. I suspect that the answers were actually provided by a human being and the robot spoke the answers. It is a common magician trick. Because of the elaborate setting, it looked real.

I could be mistaken, but my common sense told me that that was the most logical outcome.

I saw a video showing a duck that was able to dance the “Moonwalk” like Michael Jackson, played to his famous song. The video was supposed to be taken in a farm in Tibet and the duck was supposed to be the reincarnation of Michael Jackson.

It was amazing and realistic. Apart from the reincarnation, there were other ducks in the video watching in amazement.

My common sense told me that this is a computer animation, rather than an actual recording of a performing duck.

I am aware that I could be wrong. The AI social robot could be real and very good. The block chain projects may produce amazing results in the future.

Until they are proven otherwise, I prefer to trust my common sense and hold a degree of skepticism.

Truth be told, you are certainly bereft of any common sense when you chose to stand in the PE and split the votes, causing TCB to lose the PE .
If you have any, you would not have got into the PE, knowing a vote less is a vote gained by the PAPIGS.

  • Darth Vader:

Yes, use our common sense. Agreed. So WHY don’t YOU practice what you preach and use YOUR OWN common sense?

Oh no, contrary to what you may protest, you are NOT using your common sense. Need proof? Consider these:

    A) you keep whining that people arerude and disrespectful to you

    B) you keep posting “articles” here that keep receiving brickbats

    C) you say that people should need to be open to others’ opinions, but you yourself think you know everything, only to get taken aback when you get slammed for it

    D) you keep saying people should be humble and not arrogant, then proceed to brag about how much you know, then don’t understand WHY you keep getting slammed for it

So tkl, use your common sense for once. If EVERY TIME you get slammed for posting something, then WHAT does your common sense tell you? No idea? It means that people are sick of your lunatic ravings and just want you to shut up and go away for good, GET IT????!!!!

STILL don’t? Okay, then you have NO business telling anyone to use their common sense at all…

    BECAUSE YOU YOURSELF HAVE NONE!!!!

  • TKL be more responsible:

Your computer display 4 characters per year is because the Software Programmer had appended 19 in front of the 2 digits years. It is part of the display formatting functions made available for human interfacing.

4 digits doesn’t means it is capable of displaying from 0000 to 9999. As in the Y2K problem, the older computer can only effectively display year 1900 to 1999 Dec 31 due to real time clock hardware capability.

The warning of computer crashing is a responsible steps taken by the manufacturers. Imagine a large databases of birth dates where disbursements are largely dates dependent. When the program revert to 1900, the computer may crash in the sense that the programmer had not program or written any action for it. Crash in the sense the computer may do things not intended by the programmer, an unknown states, so to speak. It is a fair timely warning for programmers and IT professionals to take early action for it.

I hope TKL will be more responsible to do his research before writing his personal shallow understandings that did not provide any values to the readers.

OMG! That duck video is fake! That video was made using video editing programs, splicing in certain animated shots, looping the duck movements & then running in real time to make it look realistic. The duck “artificial” movements were then synchronised to Michael Jackson’s music making as if the duck was dancing to his tune. Tan Kin Lian, it’s all fake!
I can’t believe that you initially actually believe that the duck was Michael Jackson. Ha-ha-ha-ha!

No such thing as common sense these days! You’ve got to do your own research, see the world for what it is & read a lot to understand, supplement your knowledge as you go along.
Cryptocurrencies (under Blockchain technology) may one day be workable but they need real Corporations behind them to work, not underground entities. Hence FaceBook (with Libra) & now Walmart.
AI & machine learning relies on human inputs to make it function. And that is why I’ve said the PAP govt missed the boat promoting their obsolete Meritocracy Policy & Elitist School system when they should have focus the school curriculum on Technology & Coding studies across all schools to have the numbers for success. MOE should have instilled a STEM Curriculum instead of focusing on school ranking & the silly PISA scores mechanism.
Now S’pore is 2 decades behind countries like China & the US. China has the capability of generating AI technology at the State Level because of their considerable investments in Supercomputing capacity & their considerable human capital (STEM). The US has fallen behind due to govt financial debt problems while the US corporate sector has reined in investments; using capital & debts instead to game the system for keeping their stock prices high. And Trump’s preoccupation with keeping US borders closed to migrants will simply hand AI leadership over to China. And S’pore govt is only concerned with boosting Population numbers to 10 million, not realising that AI & machine learning will slash job numbers in the future. Population growth policies are obsolete yet the PAP is still banking hard on that. Do they have the common sense?

  • TKL lost $48,000 deposit.:

Mr Tan KL, reminded me of Michael Hui, the brother of Sam Hui. In one of the Singing audition, before Michael can open his mouth, the Director yelled “CUT”, and the “NEXT”. Michael is then seen begging for another chance.

Yes Common Sense, 4 candidates, rank the last one. TKL, got the lowest votes of all the candidates, with only 4.9% of the votes. For failing to achieve at least 12.5% of the votes, Tan also lost his S$48,000 deposit.

    Common Sense tells me;

One: Like Michael Hui, Being in the audition, doesn’t makes you a Singer.

Two: As as Electorate with forfeiture of deposits, doesn’t makes you any close to being a President. Forfeiture means “REJECT”, literally speaking.

The intriguing question is What makes TKL thinks that Singaporeans at large are interested to know his thinking, his common sense or his personal life?

Common Sense tells me, not many.

Well to extend Mr Tan’s story a bit further let us all use our own common sense too.

Mr Tan stood for the Presidential Election and we all knew it was real, no fake. However, we all(most of us anyway) used our common sense and came to the conclusion that Mr Tan would not be suitable to be our president and so voted for someone else.

Strangely Mr Tan’s common sense went the other way and he thought he would win!

It was Tan Jee Say who caused TCB to lose the PE. Even if TCB got all the votes that went to TKL TCB still would have lost to Tony Tan.

    That is not entirely true.

If all of Kin Lian’s votes were to go to Cheng Bock, Tony Tan would have been beaten by more than 90,000 votes. All Cheng Bock needed was 7384 votes to beat Tony Tan.

In the 2011 PE, Tony Tan garnered 745693, Cheng Bock had 738311, Jee Say had 530441 and Kin Lian had 104095.

Even if one were to argue that had Kin Lian withdrew himself from the race, all of his 104095 votes may not all go to Cheng Bock, Tony Tan would also have been beaten because it would not be difficult for Cheng Bock to “steal” 7384 or 7.1% of the 104095 spilled votes.

It is safe to say that Tony Tan’s vote count may not rise significantly from the spilled votes because these 104095 voters would not have voted for anything PAP related.

IMHO, had Jee Say or Kin Lian (just any one of them) withdrew from the race, Tony Tan would not have been the President of Singapore.

In the PE 2011, the [email protected] had expected Jee Say to contest the PE with Cheng Bock, but Kin Lian was a spanner in the works and we were all shocked when Kin Lian announced his intention.

One need not be a PhD to know that it always benefit the incumbent whenever there is a multi-corner fight. At that time, we were asking “What was Meng Seng thinking?”.

Be that as it may, its history and we should all move on. No point harping over spilled milk.
