As Elections Approach, Heng and His Master Talk Cock

As the next election draws inexorably closer, the PAP are up to their usual tactics: bamboozling Singaporeans. After calls for “harmony” Lee Hsien Loong’s loyal seat-warmer Heng Swee Keat has come out to say Singapore cannot afford “adversarial” politics:

I will say that even across the world, the systems which have operated well in delivering a better life for their people have been systems in which people are prepared to deal with differences, but not in an adversarial way,”

Which systems is Heng referring to? The richest countries in the world are all democracies, except for oil-rich monarchies like the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar and Brunei. A country cannot truly be described as democratic if elections have never resulted in a change of government and in most democracies parties alternate in power regularly. Heng insulted the Malaysian journalists to whom he spoke because Malaysia is a democracy and Singapore is not. It is only through adversarial politics, transparency and accountability to the electorate, through competition to get elected, that governments in democracies strive to make their citizens better off and to provide them with safety nets to cushion the impact of failure.

When he talks about systems which have delivered a better life for their people Heng presumably means the Communist system. That’s strange because the Soviet Union and its puppet regimes collapsed after having failed to deliver despite at one stage in the 50s being thought capable of overtaking the US. Does Heng think that the Chernobyl nuclear accident and its subsequent cover-up by the Soviet Government are not proof that systems in which information is kept secret and decisions by leaders go unquestioned are inferior to democracies?

Like many in the West (who would not tolerate for a single second the loss of personal liberty) who sing the praises of what are euphemistically called communitarian policies, Heng undoubtedly is referring to China. When contemplating opening up to the West Deng Xiaoping visited Singapore in 1978 and met with LKY. Singapore is the role model for China in how to develop without liberalising or giving up political control.

China may have succeeded in the biggest and fastest rise in living standards the world has seen but a large part of the credit goes to the way China, like Singapore, Japan, Germany and Korea, was able to game the World Trade Organisation and take advantage of the US’s relatively open markets while throwing trade and non-trade barriers in the way of imports from the US. As Mike Pompeo, US Secretary of State, said today, slow growth is the “new normal” for China. The question is still open as to whether, given its aging population, China will ever overtake the US if their economies are measured at market prices and even less likely that it will approach US living standards.

Whatever rubbish Heng talks, the Communist model is not attractive to better-educated Chinese. Those who have become rich during this period of growth know that their new wealth can be confiscated at any time if they fall foul of the Communist Party. We do not see people lining up to get into China like they do into the US and other Western countries. Despite Singaporeans’ submissiveness to authoritarian dynastic rule that is against their self-interest, they would find Chinese rule even less attractive.

The PAP are the only ones practising “adversarial” politics against anyone who disagrees with them. Lee Hsien Loong and his father crushed my dad who was accused by both father and son of trying to destroy the PAP system just because he wanted to see more accountability. They are the biggest threat to Singapore, not democracy, because their repressive rule will stifle all innovation and creativity. Meanwhile the PAP conveniently label as “adversarial” or troublemakers anyone who attempts to find out the amount of assets the state controls, how they are managed and the controls in place to prevent conflicts of interest and in particular how much the PM secretly pays his wife or the assets his family have accumulated after 60 years of unchallenged rule.

  • 70% insist lack transparency?:

    Is the 70% nuts!?
    Liking PAP is one thing .
    But why do they support them for the lack of transparency?

    Would they demand transparency into why they are sacked? Replaced by foreigners ?

    If so, why they don’t want to demand the same from PAP for things like CPF, Investment Losses using our cpf?

    Is it out of fear?

    Or stupidity ?

    Are they honest people? Honest to their consciences?

  • Rabble-rouser:

    But China like Japan, Germany & South Korea have a very strong Technological & Industrial base; a Manufacturing core which is the main part of their Economy. This is a very important issue because it will mean jobs & prosperity irregardless of the politics involved.
    Most importantly, these are sustainable activities that are not easily replicable; without substantial investments & without training human capital to partake in these types of industrial endeavours.
    Also, the spinoffs in banking & finance, logistics & trading are immense with manufacturing at the core.

    S’pore, on the other hand, had been hollowed out of Manufacturing activities by Paradigm Shifts (end of Cold War, rise of China), restructured into a Macau/Monaco “Wealth” type of business model & economy. After hollowing out in the 1990s, the PAP were left with only the 2 International commodities that were tradeable, coverted namely, the SG$ & S’pore real estate (80-90% of S’pore were State-owned lands). The rise of S’pore property values, the focus on extracting high returns on Brick ‘N Mortar by property vehicles like REITs which then radiated onto S’pore’s cost of living eco-system. SG$ was the carrot that enticed foreigners to come into S’pore as tourists looking for employment. This in turn was the catalyst that propel housing rents upwards & channel a lot of resources into the property market.
    But these aren’t sustainable unlike Manufacturing because property values can’t have an upward price trajectory because they required a “wall of liquidity” & a never ending flow of debts. And the SG$ faces issues going forward; high External Debts & doubts about S’pore’s SWFs effectiveness.
    S’pore faces huge external issues on several fronts:
    * Heighten sense of geopolitical shifts threatening foreign investments, trade routes & external job creation;
    * Isolation with no allies, forsaken by the US, snubbed by China & ignored by ASEAN;
    * Environmental fears with rising sea levels from climate change & over development; &
    * Increasing shortage of sand, uncertainty over water & fossil fuel resources.
    Despite what Kenneth Jeyaretnam says, It is hardly the political mechanism that is at fault! But S’pore govt’s own unique problem which were the smug arrogance (monopoly over knowledge, Meritocracy Policy) & a distinctive stubborness (Adherence to old policies despite growing evidence of failure). The economic pathways taken were solely at the discretion of the PAP with no input, no feedback from the electorate. The adversarial politics is just a rhetorical statement when you consider the well-controlled political eco-system & financial punitive methods used to extract obedience, compliance…

  • Rabble-rouser:

    - Cont’d -
    S’pore’s unique problem is that S’pore isn’t even a country, not even having a true political system but actually a personality cult set to a rigid doctrine laid down by LKY to a group of followers. Similar to North Korea, this adherence to the doctrine is hereditary in nature because they benefit the family behind the doctrine & of course, they would defend it with their lives, if possible.
    But because of the insecurities behind protecting this rigid doctrine, it is very difficult to change (enact economic reforms) with the changing times. It would be tantamount to a doctrine failure if changes were made. Also, the cult of personality would be tarnished along the way – not God-like!
    Look at the indoctrination process ongoing post-LKY, the enforced bowing (by preschool teachers) of kindergarten students to LKY’s memorial; the heated family squabble over 38 Oxley Road; the extravagant spending for a very expensive piece of land for a Founder’s memorial & building of a MRT station at the site; & revisionist history lessons beginning with S’pore “a fishing village before LKY took control”. But then again, S’poreans are kinda stupid!

  • This one trying very hard:

    Rabble-rouser:

    * Isolation with no allies, forsaken by the US, snubbed by China & ignored by ASEAN;

    “The advances in military cooperation are highlighted by the announcement that the United States will station four US Navy Littoral Combat Ships in Singapore starting in 2012. This will give the US Navy a front row seat in the simmering dispute over the South China Sea”

    “Task Force 73/Commander, Logistics Group Western Pacific – 7th Fleet’s Logistics Force composed of supply ships and other fleet support vessels. Headquartered in Singapore.”

    no allies?

  • Andy:

    Please. Both Kenneth and Heng are not economists. They have only a bachelor degree or at most an MPA from the Harvard Mickey Mouse program for third world civil servants that has no course requirements or deliverables. You need to have a PhD to call yourself an economist, or mathematician or whatever. Lee hsienloong earned only an undergrad degree in math so he is merely a math grad, not a mathematian at all. Don’t give them the honor they don’t deserve.
