Dr Tan Cheng Bock, opposition politics and a new dawn for Singapore

Gilbert Goh with Dr Tan Cheng Bock

Dr Tan Cheng Bock’s announcement of his intention to start a new party has brought forth a lot of cheers and hope to the opposition camp. Its the first time that any ex-PAP MP has switched camp so deliberately and many have hope that it will provide the impetus for a split within the weakened PAP camp.

There are the occasional whimper from aggrieved former PAP MPs who could not agree with the policies of the incumbent but none has the guts and more importantly the stature to raise a team and form a political party.

Understandably, Dr Tan has gained much from the experience of standing for the Presidential Election two terms ago and lost by a narrow margin to the elected President Tony Tan but it has raised his profile considerably – from being a PAP white man to someone who could rally the country and speak for the common people.

His failure to stand for the recent PE – notably against the appointed woman President Halimah Yacob – has irked the doctor to no end and he has vowed to take his dissatisfaction to the highest level. So his decision to start a political party to challenge the incumbent does not surprised many.

At the ripe age of 78 years old, Dr Tan not only commands respect but held a considerable amount of clout by frequently championing for causes close to the heart of the common people. Even during his several terms as a PAP MP previously, he has gone against the grain and raised issues that are not in line with party politics – often behaving like one from the opposition camp.

During his rally speeches at the PE which he contested, he spoke alot about minimum wages, transparency of sovereign funds and the monopoly of power within a single party – issues that troubled many Singaporeans but have no where to channel their frustration to. Dr Tan frequently reminded many Singaporeans that he is outspoken and will vehemently speak out against any policies unhesitatingly even though he is a ex-PAP MP.

However, despite the many benefits he could bring to a system that is crying out for a strong alternative voice, some critics have questioned whether he is able to swing the hearts and minds of hard-core opposition supporters who have always view any man in white with suspicion. Will Dr Tan behave and think like a PAP man if he is being elected to be an MP in the opposite camp?

Will a leopard change it’s spot and sometimes even relent in the face of immense pressure from going too hard against his former master?

Already, several PAP MPs have spoken against the doctor for forming a new party and will Dr Tan then take a few steps back when the political pressure pile up especially during the soon-coming election campaign?

Will the frequently-used dirty word “traitor” push him back from giving his best as an alternative MP if he is being elected? The incumbent will not hold back and likely unleash hell on this prodigal son who may even usher the start of a direct break from PAP’s total domination if things will to go to the good doctor’s way.

His deliberate total switch from the white side has given hope to many pro-PAP supporters who are aghast with what the authorities have being doing for the past decade but could not immediately quell their loyalty and vote for any opposition party yet. Dr Tan has given them that added incentive to vote for an alternative voice – no less thrusted by a trust-worthy former white man.

Dr Tan to his credit will likely give his best despite the anticipated fierce backlash and hold his ground in his honourable wish to provide a alternative voice to the masses. His performance in the contested PE has convinced many that he will not yield to his former master however difficult the journey may be.

The forthcoming GE will probably be fiercely contested with this fresh alternative input and it is for the country’s benefit that other smaller splinter opposition parties join ranks and contest together as one flagship.

There are also currently too many opposition parties in our political scene now and if a few are to join hands with the doctor, it will not only raise the profile of opposition politics but they may even miraculously win some seats for doing something that is unseen before. Moreover, voters are mostly emotional and the feel-good vibes of a large powerful coalition will likely bring forth much synergy in the opposition camp.

Malaysia could only topple the incumbent UMNO – another post-war traditional party in the mould of PAP – by coming together to contest their recent election as one huge political umbrella and though Dr Tan is no Dr Mahathir – he could hopefully pave the way in the near future for more ex-PAP loyalists to swing their political allegiance.

PAP will probably now have some sleepless nights ahead especially with the next election looming so near the corner.

  • First Thing First:

You have got to work with what you have.
Oppositions are not infallible men but they are not evil or scheming, but they have to be smart when facing against incorrigible cheats and greeds.

It seems that successful politicians must be able to tell sincere lies.
A corrupted regime needs two hands to clap loudly, gullible voters and slippery politicians to make a match for greedy evil pigs to reign for decades, especially the last 3 decades, where the slide began.

Good men are now very rare in the pigsty.
For TCB to enter opposition ranks in itself is a clear sign that he is not a Pig. If dafts could accept TCB as change leader, then so be it, TCB is the man.
Getting rid of pigs is the key first step, the sty badly needs to be cleared before any salvaging can be made to this sinking sampan.

First Thing First, remove all those pigs and their sycophants in parliament.

Dr Tan is a very astute politician with a heart for the common people.

He would know that his party needs to have a loose coalition with other opposition parties so as to be able to carry out the necessary changes that are deep rooted both in doctrine and practice.

He knows he has a short time frame to act, so the best way is to have the assistance of other opposition parties like the SDP. If you look at the other opposition parties (except WP) you will know that that there is a lot of commonalities between the parties. The differences are slim.

Other coalition parties in other countries are able to work together harmoniously. So I can’t see why opposition parties in Singapore cannot.

There is much to correct and put right for the people. Politics should not be about personalities but policies geared towards the people–their welfare and their future.

Nevertheless, the Clown still has some advantage in deciding when to call an election. The longer he waits, the more time the opposition parties can continue to work. So he is in a quandary here.

Whatever it is be prepared to hear more homilies and motherhood statements from the Clown when he opens his month in the next few days.

  • opposition dude:

As of now there are too many unanswered questions. All we know is that PSP will be contesting in some wards but their plans for the country have not been presented in greater detail. While Dr Tan isn’t Lee Kayu the fact that Hsien Yang on his side does help quite a bit. He is the PM’s brother after all although he has never been in politics.

I do hope that PSP can form a coalition with the smaller parties but perhaps working together with SDP might be better. We all know WP won’t be working with anybody since they feel that it’s better to go against PAP alone.

Alas, if only there was an opposition party which could challenge for half the parliament seats.

  • Protect Singapore(ans) Party:

You know how scared the papies and their PLPs are of Dr Tan when you hear more and more of them badmouthing, character assassinating and passing the worst kind of remarks about Dr Tan. How childish can those idiots be?

Contest gentlemanly in the GE if anyone thinks he’s capable and competent and better than Dr Tan. Would Woody Goh CT or any of the 4G ministers dare to take on Dr Tan in a 1-1 challenge in a SMC?

It’s very unfair to say that Dr Tan started a political party because he was angry and unhappy as he was denied his chance to stand for the recent PE.

Only a person of Dr Tan’s patriotism and morality would be willing to step out of his comfort zone and tries to right what’s wrong for the sake of his country. With his wealth, health and status, he could jolly well retire and enjoy life. Especially knowing how the group of bullies in white would fix their opponents, why would Dr Tan bother to make life difficult for himself and re-enter politics if it’s not because he sees something is very wrong with our sg now?

Dr Tan is like a brave warrior willing to step into the battlefield to save his country and his fellow countrymen with little concerns for his own situation. People who doubt his sincerity, his patriotism and love for his country and have shamelessly passed crude remarks about Dr Tan should have the guts to challenge him in a SMC in the GE, otherwise, better shut their gaps and stop disgracing themselves.

  • Ban Election =Stability?:

If Elections is bad, why not ban it?
    Don’t get me wrong.
    Do you get my drift?

Protests allows for voicing up against establishment.

So is Banning protests the right thing to do?

Might as well change the Constitution to disallow citizens any rights to criticise the govt and ban protests and elections ?

The world has proven since beginning of civilisations that many govts all over the world has corruptions , may not be every leader but many. Enough to prove how difficult it is to trust govt to be clean and will not do wrong.

Dictatorship allows for most efficient form of govt as there is zero objections and citizens have no rights to disapprove.

But this model is naive. When govt does wrong, the people have no way to hold them accountable. They are merely slaves.

So, democracy is not perfected by any country but compared to dictatorship, it’s far better an option.

If not democracy, not dictatorship, what ?

So don’t be stupid, people. Don’t be fooled by one party dominant system selling you idea that having alternative in parliament is worse than a dictatorship.

Please be informed that S’pore had already been programmed towards a head-on Global collision [of De-Globalisation, Trade Wars, Potential Geopolitical & actual Conflicts, etc] where the casualty count would be enormous & Collateral Damage [metaphor for serious injuries *sic* financial distress & massive unemployment; sudden deaths *sic* unexpected bankruptcies, financial collapse; are liable to happen whether you like it or not.

Dr Tan Cheng Bock's "hands up" to participate in the political arena is just too little, too late! Don't hold your hopes up because S'pore is already too late into the Downward Economic Cycle & too deep with the PAP's configuration for reaping free rides from Globalization & exploiting Free Trade tax benefits - now it's not going to happen. Anyone with a brain can see how horribly S'pore & S'poreans are exposed to the incoming Perfect Storm.

No opposition party can possibly change S'pore from going into deep recession & possibly suffer from a long period of economic depressionary conditions. S'pore may never recover back into a position of strength like it used to in the past. S'pore isn't going into a traditional Cyclical Business Cycle but actually facing a Fundamental Structural Change where S'pore would emerge totally disconnected with a New Knowledge Economy.

We would fade into obscurity like what Malacca did in the past! But the irony is that China's BRI is bring back Malacca & I suppose, sink S'pore in the process!

Truth be told, with PAP's high cost of living eco-system & that we, realistically, have nothing of substance to offer to the Global Economy, we're horibbly exposed to harsh reality of economic irrelevance & having no comparative advantage in the Global Playing field.

China's BRI is configured to take out S'pore's natural geographical advantage & neutralise our strategic positioning in "traditional" trade routes [via Arctic & Overland Silk routes].

S’poreans screwed themselves in the a**e when they kept voting the PAP as a single party without opposition. You’re going to pay the price for that silly action!

  • Dr TanCB PSP topples clown pap:

if Dr Mahatir of PH can do it, so also Dr Tan CB PSP.

Dr Mahatir is a medical doctor. So also Dr Tan CB.

Dr Mahatir was an ex politician. So also Dr Tan CB.

Dr Mahatir was PM in Msia UMNO. But Dr Tan CB was MP in pap parleement so much so being trained by the sneaky cheats is certainly more than able to do it.

Dr Mahatir did it in his 90s. Dr Tan CB is only in his 70s, so being younger guaranteed is able to do it.

Our votes go to OPPO, any OPPO, as long as not the tan kin lian 3 corner fight. if tan kin lian 3 corner fight, our votes go to Dr Tan CB PSP coalition OPPO.
