Life is expensive for the poor

I was surprised to read in ST that a lady living in a two-room HDB flat said that an air con cost $1000 which she couldn’t afford.

Then I realised that she could only use the kind of air cons that don’t require a hole to be knocked in a wall, and that even if HDB allowed her to knock a hole in the wall, getting a contractor adds to the costs. So $1,000 is about right especially as it’s likely she’ll be buying on the never-never: hire purchase.

Sad.

Fyi, two years ago when my existing box air con failed, I got a second hand replacement (Remember this brand: National?) for $250. Bet you, they’d replace the motor of my old one and sell it as second hand, even though they told me they couldn’t repair it: more like “wouldn’t”. But at $250 (including installation), I’m not complaining.

I remembered asking, “What else I got to pay?”

Air con is still working.

  • Dictatorship in asia:

The neoliberal ideology followed by PAP draws its social power from the political and economic power of those whose interests it expresses: stockholders, financial operators, industrialists, conservative or social-democratic politicians who have been converted to the reassuring layoffs of laisser-faire, high-level financial officials eager to impose policies advocating their own extinction because, unlike the managers of firms, they run no risk of having eventually to pay the consequences. Neoliberalism tends on the whole to favour severing the economy from social realities and thereby constructing, in reality, an economic system conforming to its description in pure theory, that is a sort of logical machine that presents itself as a chain of constraints regulating economic agents.

Wait till gst grows to 9 or 10%!

    You ain’t seen nothing yet!

I wish to whistle blow the following for investigation if this seemingly unfair practice is true :

    * Recent national day celebrations were held at udb estates. I saw many elderlies go to the park to queue up for goodies bag.
Elderlies have no income and so they like these sort of things.
After asking a neighbor aunty , she told me she paid $2 to participate and they get a goodies bag.

    So it’s worth it.

But I ask my mom, she said she never got notified of this thing.

My neighbor told me THOSE WHO WENT TO RC got to know of this.

So, there is no notification to all elderlies. Only if you visit RC .

So, elderlies like my parents who don’t visit RC never get notified this goodies bag thingies.

    QUESTION :
    1. Is tax money used to buy these goodies bags?

If so, it would be UNFAIR to elderlies who did not go to RC.

Is this a PREFERENTIAL TREATMENT for those who frequent the RC ?
    Is there DiSCRIMINATION?

    PLEASE INVESTIGATE.

I’m very cynical of CI’s written articles. Whenever I read his stuff, you get the impression that he is writing fiction, not based upon reality! Fairy tale & fantasy storytelling!

Two-room HDB flats were mostly built upto 1970s until HDB had stopped building them due lack of demand. The earlier HDB flats came with a “hole in the wall” for window aircond mainly in the master bedroom. And the two-room HDB flat became mostly HDB rental units in matured estates (don’t think you’re allowed to fit aircond).

It was only after 2000s that 2-room HDB flat were re-introduced as short lease retiree studio flats which were later called 2-room Flexi.

By the 1980s, S’pore’s increasing prosperity shifted demand to 4-room & 5-room HDB flats. The 1980s HUDC concept (better class of exclusive & self-contained public housing) had failed miserably which lead to HDB first incorporating & building exclusive Executive Mansionettes (EM) blocks within HDB estates; then integrating Executive Apartments (EA) with 5-room blocks subsequently. But by the 1990s, the popularity of aircond split units meant that the “hole in the wall” provision were unnecessary!

    https://www.teoalida.com/singapore/hdbfloorplans/

These days, there’s hardly any demand for box window aircond units in the market. What you see at the Electrical Stores are split units & they start at over $1,700 upwards (for Single Split) all the way to over $3,000 upwards for Multi-Split units. Of course, Mitsubishi Electric & Denso are more expensive & premium brand names in the market which costs more.

And my aircond servicing contractor advised me that there’s hardly anyone in the market today that does second hand replacement for box window aircond compressor (no demand for them). And at $250 plus installation, they won’t even bother to attend to you!

Most of the poor couldn’t even afford their electricity, let alone air-conditioning. The poor lives on ‘debit electricity card’ where the electricity is automatically cut off once there is no more credits, just like a prepaid phone card.
You can check around with genuine social workers to validate this.
Many of these poor skimped on nutrition or skipped meals.

Your argument is very similar to holding back CPF because claim of some uncles spending them in Batam. Everything has some exceptions and that’s not the point in the discussion.

The point is one has to be discerning in recognizing an exception and be wary of elements using that as a universal norm to justify some self serving actions. This talk about air-conditioning is simply a distraction to shape perception.

Many of our poor could not afford and have problems paying their bills and basics such as electricity is one of them. If it is not a common issue then such “special” treatment should not not existed.

Try get some social volunteers to bring you on site education and you will have a different perspectives other than “party lines”. Refusing to acknowledge does not mean the issue is not there.

Here is my irrefutable proof from independent source.

    https://www.propertyinvestsg.com/price-charts/

Scroll down that page and you come to this table.

URA Annex A-2 Price Indices of Non-Landed Properties by Market Segment (1Q2009 = 100) -CORE CENTRAL REGION.

4Q/2012 that index stood at 140.3, IT DECLINED TO A TROUGH at 2Q/2017 125.9 – that is roughly translated to a 11% DECLINE IN four and a half year.

It then picked up somewhat back in 4Q/2018 to 136.4 – HELPED STRONGLY by last year crazy en bloc craze BUT THE INDEX WAS STILL BELOW 140.3 as of 4Q/2012.

THAT MUST MEAN THAT THOSE WHO BOUGHT SINCE 4Q/2012 ALL LOST MONEY – not factoring transaction legal costs (buy/sell) and other government levy of property cooling measures now in place.

Based on URA statistics of Q1 2009 the private property price index was 100 and end qtr 2018 was 136.4, your actual appreciation is 36.5% OVER 10 YEARS PERIOD.

AND THAT IS CONDITIONAL UPON THE FACT THAT YOU DARED AND DID BOUGHT AT THE PEAK OF THE GLOBAL FINANCIAL CRISIS when all asset classes GLOBALLY fell to the bottom. And have you got the t*sticle for that bet?

And if you haven’t then you are talking rubbish here.

BUT IF YOU ARE A PUPPY WALKING AROUND WITH THREE D*CKS – bet the devil whatever come and luckily bought at GFC/property market crash bottom, YOUR ANNUALISED COMPOUNDED GROWTH OVER THE 10 YEAR PERIOD IS ONLY 3.1%.

If your mortgage rate is around 2.5%, your annualised gain compounded is only 0.6% of 1 percent.

WHAT A STUPID INVESTMENT DECISION THAT WAS WHEN YOU COMPARED TO OVER 9% PER ANNUM IF YOU BOUGHT PHYSICAL GOLD IN 2009 AND HOLD IT TILL NOW.

@ Whomever you are (truth seeker, r-r wild imagination Et al):
My advice to you: Get a life!

Don’t get personal with me on issues which are beyond anyone’s control. No one can claim a monopoly over wisdom & knowledge except for the PAP & their IBs.

You have a damn petty personality & a nitpicker for irrelevant things. If you want to do better in life, learn to see the big picture!

    1. I like said before, if you got the money, go book a condo now in case the rich HK’gers come a-calling! No one is stopping you! As for “instead prices went up and higher in sg” – you got a good imagination especially the URA Property Index had been stagnant since 2013. The only blip was in 2017/18 with the EnBloc resurgence but has since went flat.

    2. MMA Uncle might had overdone it (beating young kids, when he could walk away immediately) hence deserved to be charged, jailed & fined. Even that, it got your panties in a bunch! I might got the police action wrong but did you lose any money?

    3. One silly PRC who hang china flag outside window on sg national day & you tarred the whole China. And I did say that the PRC’ians S’pore received were of a lower quality that those I had observed overseas. I admired those Chinamen who dared ventured to the USA (Flushing, NY), to Australia without being able to speak English well! Do you have their courage? I don’t think so especially if you’re more concerned with nitpicking & being petty like a little girl!

Character attack is a “below the belt” tactic when IB people can’t rebut you on your constructive arguments. And you have never been able to rebut except for character assassination!
