Online surveys by National Population and Talent Division

The Straits Times reported the following findings from the online surveys:

1. 75% of respondents said that domestic responsibilities should be shared between spouses and that both spouses should have equal responsibility in making key household decisions.

2. 75% agreed that work-life harmony is more important than getting a promotion. 92% choose having supportive bosses and understanding colleagues. 78% choose flexible work arrangements.

3. Only 45% said that they are able to meet their work, family and personal commitments.

Somehow, the surveys did not ask the right questions. My “common sense” tells me that many families cannot afford to raise children due to the high cost of living.

To address this problem, the government must make the state bear the bulk of the cost of raising children, rather than the parents. The availability of highly subsidized child care centers in the neighborhood must be a top priority. These centers should provide simplified access to all preschool children. We should get away from the complicated system of determining eligibility for subsidy.

The state should also provide a monthly cash allowance to the family to meet the cost of bringing up the child.

Some of the suggestions rely on the generosity of employers to be family friendly. We should get away from this hope. Struggling employers cannot afford to be generous or charitable. Even profitable employers look at their bottom line and will not be that generous towards less productive employees who have to take care of young children.

There have been many anecdotes of employers terminating female employees who are on the way to parenthood. They do not want to bear the cost of the maternity benefits.

I am not saying that all employers behave in a mercenary fashion. Some may be generous. But it is difficult for the employees to rely on this uncertain generosity. But the employees are never sure if they will really be treated well during the years of raising their children.

If most of the cost of raising children can be borne by the state, there is less need for the mothers to continue a full time job just to make ends meet. They may have the option to work part time and not be a burden to their employers.

The approach adopted by the government has failed to raise the low reproduction rate for over three decades. It is time to adopt an entirely new approach.

All this means the MIW are now going to make laws using the survey data?

Perhaps this needs to be done. The 70% can’t even go to toilet without MIW checklist.

  • Darth Vader:

Oh wow, I never thought I’d say this, but THANK YOU tkl! It’s so WONDERFUL & KIND of you to volunteer to sell off your house and everything you own and live on the streets just so that you can give ALL your money to the government to give to young local (native Singaporeans ONLY! NO PRs) parents to help raise their children

Wait, what’s that you said? You NEVER volunteered to sell away everything you own just so the government can support these parents? But, but, but, the government has NO money of its own. EVERYTHING they have, every single cent comes from us tax payers!!!! Do you realize what this means? NO????!!!!

HEY STUPID, it means that the government will use this program as an excuse to RAISE GST!!!! As if things aren’t costly enough here, you actually WANT them to RAISE the costs of EVERYTHING even MORE????!!!!

You know what tkl, how about you follow my suggestion; every time you get the urge to post another of your lunatic ravings here, how about you stick your head into the business end of a commode instead and press and hold down the button all the way? It might, just might, give you a… shall we say… DIFFERENT perspective on things?

And as for the rest of us, while I can only speak for myself, I don’t think I’m wrong to say that everyone else would agree with me that we’d rather NOT have these cash handouts and instead have lower GST and costs of living so that we can get to keep a little more of our hard earned monies…

we say, good riddance to pap. for greed, pap priced land so out of whack with median wage. so much so everything is artificially so expensive.

we tell foreign friends not to come to Singapore. we explain to them for the same US$ or Euro they spend in Singapore, they can get 3 or more times out of them in Msia Thailand Indosia.

The bugger is hell-bent on “growing the economy” by ballooning the populace. Cheap ft labour and expendable singkies in constant supply. 2018 suicide rate at 397 deaths and mental hospital increasing admissions. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is found to be more prevalent among young adults, compared with those aged 50 and above. The disorder is less likely in those with a monthly household income of between S$2,000 and S$3,999, compared with those who earn less than S$2,000 – sounds like desperate disenfranchised youth?

  • Ostrich Lieutenant General:

Ostrich cannot give birth when overly stressed.

We in the Ostrich division knows this well.

Many of my ostriches are OverWorked, UnderPaid and any disapproval or unhappiness with policies they swallow their pride and dare not speak up.

This lowered their erection tensile strength. Their appetites lowered, sperm cont lowered, some become dysfunctional. Some lost their libido.

Not only are humans like this but we Ostriches too.

We need to feel a sense of Freedom in order to get back our Erectile projectile capabilities.

This is an existential issue for our ostriches.

We dig our heads into holes on the ground to hear no evil speak no evil. We are timid. But our arses are exposed, pointed towards the Verizon. Easy access for foreign penetration .
