Lower frequency for trains during off peak hours

The train operators plan to reduce the frequency of trains during off peak hours.

Here are my views:

a) It is acceptable for the waiting time to be up to 10 minutes during off peak hours. This is the waiting time for buses as well.

b) During my travel on off peak hours, I hardly find a place to seat. I do not think that the train should be fully packed during off peak hours. During off peak hours, we should allow all passengers to be able to find a seat.

c) There should be other ways to reduce the operating cost, instead of reducing the train frequency. Are we paying too much for the other cost of the operations, such as computer system and top management salaries?

d) The savings from reducing the train frequency may be small.

Instead of reducing the frequency, we should look at the other areas to reduce the operating cost.

  • All wrong about profits:

This government is just too greedy.

The COE on cars is meant to reduce road traffic. Then people without cars must have public transport.

By right, the COE money, a few billions every year, should be used to pay for public transport. Tio boh? Right or not? Public transport should be free, fast and frequent.

But this government simply pocket all the COE and ERP monies. Then the government want people deprived of cars to pay them huge profits for public transport.

How can? Every thing they do, they make huge profits. So where do the huge profits go?

Increased waiting time will only increase the trainload. It will erase the benefits of non-peak travel. No more difference between peakand non-peak travel.

  • Bobo:

During LKY’s time, the SBS bus company will have their drivers incharge of their own bus washing despite of their pay were low. Back then, their buses were clean and spacious. The current buses are smaller and very uncomfortable to sit side by side. There’s insufficient arm space for comfort. Yet bus fare keeps increasing with PAP’s full support. Likewise for the MRT, pay to stand for free body rubbing and legs stepping. Is this how they treat customers? We should asked the 70% who had given the very strong mandate to PAP. We are in the worst state since after GE2015.

What does expensive crony-capitalist management do to your public services? : reduces efficiency & increasing costs. We thought with the massive earnings of SMRT retail we’d all have more comfortable rides… but who could question the “you have no choice, if don’t like can migrate elsewhere” corporate chauvinism?

  • Maintenance Needed:

Even during off-peak hours it can be crowded and difficult to find a seat. Why is it at some stations the escalator handrails feel so yucky (e.g. Jurong East), the yellow markers between steps are faded, and the elevators have a pungent smell (Bt. Panjang)? For health and safety concerns, the station managers should bring this matter up to the Management.

  • Harder Truths:

TKL – the difference is two minutes (3min peak to 5min off-peak.

The system is overrun by PEOPLE, you will never find a place to sit – peak or off-peak.

People who have SARS or TB or Flu. People who will infect you by coughing and sneezing into your face. People who have farting contests next to you. People who smell bad. People who spit into plastic containers.

Yes I have seen all of this. The best part is there is more entertainment coming after next GE.

The root cause is too many people.

For a system designed for 3m+ with an additional 1m+ stretch, running to move 7m+ everyday is disaster.

  • NotMyProblem:

I just cannot see what is peak and off-peak periods. Just because the transportation is packed like sardine, it is peak periods. So when increase the waiting time for more people to pack into the transportation it becomes peak period.

Remember there are people who go to work at different hour of the day depending on public transport. Example shopping malls workers usually start at 11am, afternoon shifts workers start at 3pm. Even 11pm, people depend on public transport to go home. Off-peak period is also meant for senior citizen to visit clinics and hospitals. Students also depend on public transport at around 2pm. I am very sure LTA has all these data.

Minister Khaw, please don’t mess up Singapore transportation system, just think how to improve it, don’t always think of how transport operator going to make money. They already make enough.

I am not sure if Minister Khaw can be a minister in Penang, where he came from. Or he would be selling Penang Laksa.

We are distressed and angrified that train operators plan to reduce the frequency of trains during off peak hours even as train fares are slated to be increased by as much as 7%.

This callous act will be taken into account when we vote in the next General Election.
