Make it easy for a former employer to provide a reference

I received a request from an employment agency in Canada to provide information on their background check of a former employee.

I was able to answer several questions in a reply to a form, embedded in the email. They were answers that I was able to give easily based on my knowledge of the former employee. I find the questions to be relevant.

My reply took less than 10 minutes as promised in their email.

I find their approach to be considerate and very good, compared to the troublesome method that is usually adopted by employment agencies in Singapore.

Here are the faults of the methods adopted in Singapore:

a) Difficult to open their encrypted questionnaire
b) Difficult to answer their questions which ask for detailed scores to issues that are hard to measure
c) Too many questions, many of which are irrelevant.

I tried to be helpful by giving references on former employees. After a few frustrating experiences, I now refuse to respond to any question for employment references that are stored in an encrypted form or adopt the “Singapore method”.

I also received an inquiry on Tan Kin Lian. I crosses “X” on all the boxes under the ‘Poor’ column. Looking for “IDIOT” column, cannot find.

@Mr. Tan; What the use of “giving references on former employees”. If your former employees are good, they should still be employed.

When the current employer ask why your former employees left? Do you say he was replaced by a foreigner, because it was cheaperest, betterest and fasterest?

  • Harder Truths:

    Yes please get referrals.

It will help the next FT-run company that will surely reject your application to say they have done ‘due diligence’.

I have seen FT at my company on the mobile whenever their various FT contacts all over SG have a job that will already be filled before the advertisement is made public.

The referral is just another way to shorten the list of $G employees. You can be sure the FT has a hundred referees from his previous company in South Asia or even in $G.

So in short – give references if you want – but it won’t change a thing.

So,you are acting in your PERSONAL CAPACITY N NOT as your former colleagues’ *EMPLOYER* as you are no more with NTUC Income or you referring to your current official position as EMPLOYER?

If just in your own personal capacity, you shud not confuse.

  • PAP CLOSE DOWN:

Some Employment agencies use the worst kind of recruitment tools. Like gettting the candidate to sit for all kinds of irrelevant tests, puzzles personality analysis. One I went to did just that. Then, the recruiter ended the interview in a minute. I ticked them off for wasting my time.

Just decline and go to another one more straigt forward.

If you did not get a reference from your ex employers, this gives them a chance to bad mouth you.

  • lying pap liar mindset:

we hired staff when we were gainfully employed. we always take any reference with a pinch of salt.

because good staff with good employers seldom leave. good staff with bad employers get bad mouthed. bad staff with ordinary employers get praised to sky high so as to get rid of bad staff haste haste.

we prefer probation period. we believe everyone deserves a chance.

Oh boy, more lunatic ravings from tkl. Hey tkl, WHO are you to decide what is or is not relevant? Why, you’re TOO STUPID to know WHY employers would ask about someone’s hobbies or family background is it? Oh yeah, that’s right, you ARE too STUPID to know why!!!! Okay, let me explain to you WHY; please read VERY SLOWLY so that you can comprehend my explanations

    1) Asking for hobbies tells the employer WHAT SORT of person you are e.g. all blackbelters are registered with the CID, so if someone lists his hobby as martial arts (black belt), the employer can check with the CID. If confirmed true, it means this guy is not a gang member. Likewise, someone who lists reading as a hobby is likely to have an open mind and is keen to learn new things. Understand so far tkl? No? No matter, it’s here on public record; you can keep reading until you finally understand. Though somehow I seriously doubt you ever will; you lack the intellectual capacity for it

Next, family. If an employee lists his relative as a prominent public figure, the employer can check with that figure if it is true. If it is, then the applicant is not trying to use fake family connections to gain an unfair advantage over others. Clear so far tkl? No? I didn’t think so. No matter, keep reading until you do.

So okay, FYI tkl, someone asked me to do an appraisal of you, but I’m stuck here, so maybe everyone here can help me out with this?

To everyone out there, how many synonyms for “arrogant egotistical narcissistic brainless moronic stupid idiotic cretin” do you know of? I need them to complete my appraisal of tkl…

For this TKL article, for once I agree with him. S’pore’s method of questionnaire is like an old grandmother hen. Asking loads of irrelevant questions from your kindergarten passing grade to primary & secondary school achievements, etc. At times, it can be rather intrusive into your personal preferences. Which IMO, is none of their fiacking business!

well, shortchanged by the white idiotic policy ?

daft sinkies gong gong welcome these FTs and they pretend / happy to smile smile (perhaps at daft sinkies stupidity ?)

once FTs have reached critical mass of numbers (already reached lar ??), they are now slowly ‘kicking out’ daft sinkies and the sad thing is that the white idiots cannot turn back and quietly going for 6.9m open-leg policy (not as loud as they used to be) if the annual number (20k pa?) of naturalizing FTs is any indication. ??

Nowadays it’s so frequent that it is happening. There are FTs who just want to bring their own villagers over to conquer the whole company and whatever wrongdoings they can cover up easily.

    =======

Are you alright in your mind??? Because you assumed the former employee:

    1. Shouldn’t be looking for a job?

    2. Then the current employer is so dumb to be asking the former employer why he left that job?

    3. You also assume all the answers to your own questions?

    4. Need I add more questions to your own mentality?

    5. …?

  • More Horrors Cumming...:

Ya but if you apply for a job who seeks “People oriented candidates”, don’t put reading as a hooby. It infers that the applicant is a bookworm and don’t socialise much.

Put relatives in the food & beverage business could mean the relative is a hawker.

List relative in the entertainment line could mean the person works in KTV lounge.

Aiyah people here very “Kuah lang”, vet people according to social status.

And fsat paced environment usually means horrible workplaces.

This is the typical Asian method of getting into too many details, and having to provide reams and volumes of information to justify fees.
