Remove discrimination for poly grads job-seekers

I had a chat with an old friend last time, and she complained to me about how hard it is to find a good job nowadays. She also graduated from top poly recently, but find it hard to leverage on it to get a good job. Despite applying diligently to many companies, many of them did not even get back to her. Those companies who replied to her mainly consist of smaller local companies that did not match her pay expectations but wanted to try their luck. She told me that even though she understands their constraint, smaller companies should focus their hiring efforts on those with lesser education instead, as she is better trained than many other job-seekers. There are many ITE grads and poly grads from less competitive polys who will be suitable for local companies, but the companies have not focused on this group of job-seekers.

Talented job-seekers like her should not face discrimination just because they have applied to good, reputable companies. Some of the older gen may find young job-seekers to be picky, but they are picky for a reason. It is important for young grads to secure a career in a reputable, stable company, preferably in a good location. There are many big companies in Singapore, and many top poly grads feel they are being shut out for good. In a free market, top talent should be accorded top dollar and poached aggressively. What happened to our competitive economy? In a competitive, meritocratic economy, a top performer like my friend should be offered better jobs than her peers, especially since she is not entering university as she feel that she is well-trained enough for the job.

She told me that because of Singapore’s paper chase, many poly grads are not even given proper opportunities for an interview, unlike university grads. This is unfair as it does not reflect the years of training and skills she learnt in a top poly, where there is tough competition and she had to fight to maintain her GPA. On top of this, she also had to juggle several commitments such as school activities and volunteering pursuits. She is definitely over-qualified in many cases.

The companies she applied to did not even bother calling her back, and those who called her back were all unable to match her salary expectations, or were situated in inconvenient locations, which signaled their inability to sustain themselves monetarily. Forgive me for being realistic, as industry analysis is a skill we learnt in school. If a company cannot even afford rent at a decent office location, will this company be able to reward employees well? Will this company be able to give out lavish bonuses and give workers a fulfilling career? All these reasons made her reject those companies as she did not prefer to work for them.

As of now, it has been a year and she feels more and more dejected. I hope more firms in Singapore, especially those bigger companies who have adequate resources to hire job-seekers will remove discrimination in their hiring practice. There are many hardworking talents in our country and they will definitely contribute greatly and pay a lot of taxes if they are given a chance.

This is the poor attitude of Singaporeans.

So you think you are better trained than others and deserve higher salary?

    Prove it…

Heartlander Singaporeans always “think” (with no prove) they are the best but the truth is they are the lousy lots.

So lousy that even ex PAP MP daughter Wee Shu Ming tick them off telling them to get out of my elite face.

    dont be a nutty sheep.

there is no such thing as top poly. it is all in the pap hype, fake news.

when so called world ranked nus ntu smu grads are jobless, Grab drivers or shake at home, a poly grad must be realistic and realized they have been had by pap BS by pap lies by pap policy.

1st, pap says cannot eat degree. so go poly ITE? No. cannot eat degree is a pap BS a pap lie a pap policy. the world is a very big place. without a degree, even the pinoy fake degree or ceca ah neh fake degree wins already, especially in pap Singapore. so, to start, once you believe pap and go poly, you have been had by pap. don’t repeat the sheep slogan about top poly. there is no such thing. a poly is nothing in the world of things.

2nd, poly ITE are never meant for any sane human. they are meant for pap minister children. but pap minister children all not in poly ITE, nor in so called world ranked nus ntu smu. pap minister children, if their grades can make it, are all in usa Ivies uk Oxbridge London Us. even if their grades cannot make it, with their stolen S$m via a pliant parleement, their children all in usa UCSD and such equally competitive expensive Us.

3rd, now that you have been had by pap, by going to poly, and fooled to believe there is such a thing as a top poly, unless your papa or mama have S$m to send you to uk Oxbridge London Us usa Ivies or ussa UCSD, very unlikely you can afford a car hyundai or otherwise. so your start life miserable squeezing in bus mrt, when pap folks who say car lite all in their maserati mercedes. Why are you so sheep nutty stupid?

Last, at your state, actually you cannot even afford to have over priced HDB rental unit, whatever size whether 2 rooms 3 rooms 4 rooms or larger. so if you believe in pap hype about having babies, you reproduce misery.

How to improve then? Very easy. First, vote into power a better group of Singaporeans to form New Government. Then, indict all the pap liars living or dead for their bad lies. At the same time, go get that degree. Is it a little late?

Late for what? voting out pap? Nah. Never too late.

Lat for degree? Nah. You still have many years left. You need that degree, better still not nus ntu smu, to get that leg into a decent work place to start your career.

Repeat. Under current pap policy, you poly is as good as chambermaid gardener security guard. You don’t believe? Too bad. You believed pap and have been had. Sad for you? No. But we wish you luck as you wise up and do the right thing at the ballot box.

BTW your S$ paying job is taken up cheaply by the cheap ceca ah neh with fake degree. Even in hospitals, you shall discover the pinoy doctor with unrecognized degree even though SMC does not recognize pinoy degrees.

    Dear Hopeful Local

Just by calling yourself a local does not entitle you to any privileges in Communist Island – except possibly National Service and paying lifelong CPF to get $15/month after you retire.

You see, ignorant one, your life means nothing to the rulers of this island. A Polytechnic is really for making money from stupid young people – who think it gives them something worthwhile. Perhaps a skill or an education.

After seeing all the Third World ‘Talent’ that are CBF (Cheaper Better Faster) can you really offer anything to your Employer – who is, most likely, another foreigner?

Most of the ‘Talent’ have never been outside of their little villages before coming here and have no idea what a toilet is – yet they can still become bosses and you will still be a toilet-cleaner until you get replaced.

Your life is just another sad tale of expecting a fantasy world with iPhones and Starbucks evrrywhere. There is no cappuccino or Google app to solve your problem. You will continue to live a third-rate life until some FT runs you over with a PMD.

Remember you have a bad life ahead of you with no escape. Then consider voting for an alternative party to get the rubbish out of your life. However I have little hope that a Poly grad has the skill to put the cross where it matters during the GE.

Best of luck trying to find a non-existent job – perhaps you can ask your non-existent Poly diploma to help you.

S’pore’s Economy is economically dead! It is like a coma patient relying on assisted living!

The foreigners working in S’pore are two-tier; the better ones (“Expats”) were seconded from their home countries with good benefits – their foreign (investment) companies dictating their terms of investment, employment to the PAP govt who are so hungry & dependent on their foreign investment, that they can’t refuse. MOM just a employment pass rubber stamping “authority”.

A number of places in S’pore eg. F&B outlets whom were heavily dependent of those “Expat” spending habits eg. Holland V, East Coast Road, etc & Landlords in key exclusive areas where rents exceed SG$4k/mth. Any pullout will see F&B outlets closed shop & Lordlords having problems with their vacant units!

The average ones (the “Masses”) were employed to boost profitability & are virtual slaves having no labour mobility to change employers. Look at the recent case where SBS bus drivers (euphemestically called “Bus Captains”) sued their SBS employer after they weren’t paid overtime & were made to work exceptionally long hours.

Before that, the Postal service went AWOL when Posties chuck entire mail bundles into the waste bin instead of delivering them. Their reason; being paid too little!

Local PMEs are having a hard time because the 3rd leg of S’pore’s Economy (MNCs) is no longer there. GLCs were exclusive to the Meritocratic (mediocrity) system while SME were still very traditional “family” businesses.

All the menial work were done by foreign labour on workers permit for a pittance. The whole island looking slick & span because an army of “Bangla” & Indian workers were deployed to do the work!

S’pore is an economic mirage! Those who are left behind were too afraid to migrate! Even venturing to M’sia were a bridge too far!

The naivety of Hopeful local is truly astonishing and certainly does not bode well for the future of Singapore EVEN IF FTS DID NOT THREATEN THEIR OPPORTUNITIES!! It surely reveals an entitled mentality, does it not?

No employer employs primarily on the basis of qualification. They employ because they can see the possible contributions that the candidate can make to their company. That is what makes a candidate attractive and employable. Fresh graduates need to prove themselves before they can expect better salaries.

As others have already noted, it is for the employing organization to decided if you have ‘talent’ or otherwise, not for you to say. If you are genuinely talented, hordes of employers will be clamoring to employ you. So grow up and get real!! The world does not owe you a living.

No thanks to the Educational System & Meritocracy Policy!

The S’pore Educational Mechanism is Learnt Helplessness at school (awaiting for directions) while Meritocratic Policy is a pot of false gold at the end of the rainbow which everyone were chasing after!

Inspite of the high accolades from external “experts” looking in, the high scholastic scores aren’t a true reflection of a progressive society. It’s just a trained batch of students able to game the mechanism to achieve high scores.

What is sorely lacking is the ability to do “critical thinking” work & to make education work for oneself! S’pore Educational System is just a chase for high marks – the false “Meritocratic” gods of success which permeates the land designed by the PAP themselves.

Parents spend a whopping SG$ 1.4 billion on tuition fees alone! This astonishing commitment & (over)investment creates this sense of entitlement & privilege.
    http://www.fas.nus.edu.sg/srn/archives/60782

But the world dynamics had changed! The Global Economy has matured along with the bulk of the productive workforce’s demographic profile (retirement, reduced level of consumption, austerity not growth).

Yet the end products from S’pore Educational System can’t even recognise this! How can they expect jobs “at the end of their rainbow” when already in the more developed economies, graduates faced gig jobs & irrelevant lower level work inspite of their qualifications.

S’poreans have a “trapped” mentality & a warped view of the world. The PAP were living on past glories which they convince the people to believe in their “Competence” hence the need for their high pay! But the conditions have changed yet they dare not change their methodology for fear of exposing themselves!
