A bad law that cause a lot of damage

The Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) is a bad law that has caused a lot of damage to our economy and daily life.

It was originally passed to protect consumers from being harassed by marketeers who call their mobile phones or sent unwanted SMS to these phones.

It did not achieve this goal which was the rationale for its existence. Consumers continue to get these unwanted calls and SMS. Complaints to the PDPA agency were ineffective.

Instead of doing good, it has caused a lot of harm. How many times have we heard messages from automated call centers telling us that we have to agree to give our data in order to get service from the business. If we do not consent, we will not be served. This is like holding customers to ransom.

I have heard the messages several thousand times over the years. It is extremely irritating. It comes on top of bad call center protocols that are implemented by nearly all companies. It makes communication stressful and difficult.

I have seen banks and telephone companies asking for all kinds of private information, including irrelevant ones, and the consumers has to agree to provide the information and allow its extensive use as the price to pay to get essential services.

If this is to be the case, it is better to write in the law that the business can use the private information, rather than to ask the consumers to give their consent each and every time, to this mockery of privacy.

The next big disaster is the law that forbid businesses to use the NRIC as a source of identification. It is a stupid law that will cause add a lot of unnecessary cost to business and hassle to consumers and not achieve any useful purpose.

We have already seen some companies spend probably millions of dollars to change their computer system to avoid the use of NRIC. Many other companies, such as banks and telephone companies, have not embarked on this change. They must have been given additional lead time.

Why is it that our smart and well paid ministers and civil servants cannot see the harm that is being created by this useless law. It is like people who are afraid of telling the emperor that he has no clothes in the fairy tale.

LHL – are you listening?

Mr TKL, you should know by now, these mil$-do-next-to-nothings arent listening to you or us peasants.
all they do is wayang wayang.
so stop asking if they are listening.
if they were listening would our country be sliding down back to 3rd world?

  • all the decent people:

aiyoh. if the national culture of the people is ‘good’, most will behave (being civic conscious & morally upright) even in the absence of law ?

if the national culture of the people is all chat-ba-lang (may be technically & legally ‘smart’ but with questionable characters), even with all the law, it will still be abused and bad things will still occur ?

however all the decent people will still get penalized for their time and cost for going through a more stringent set of rules ?

with sinkie land now becoming more chat-ba-lang culture from open-leg policy, we will see more and more chat-ba-lang behaviors and more rules lor ? and with all more chat-ba-lang converted to sinkies, the ‘blame game’ can again now go to daft sinkies lor ?

I am constantly taken aback at Tan Kin Lian’s English.
How does one rise up the ranks to the top when one’s
English leaves Much to be desired?
Eg A bad law that cause a lot of damage
    (should be “causeS”)
Eg marketeers who call their mobile phones or sent unwanted SMS
    (should be “senD”)
Eg I have seen banks and telephone companies asking for all kinds of private information, including irrelevant ones, and the consumers has to agree
(should be “irrelevant MATERIAL”; [the word "information" does
not have a plural. there is no 1 information, 2 informations!!]
    should be “HAVE to agree”).

Telling the emperor he’s naked tkl? Funny, are you describing yourself tkl? Because ypu’re so STUPID you just cannot get a clue that NOBODY wants to hear from you, that’s why!!!!

Do you actually know WHY companies ask for certain information tkl? There are many reasons, but the most common range from clearly identifying the clients to ensure that the correct person gets the service or prize, to finding out the customers needs, wants and likes to provide them with better business experiences. Surely as the former CEO of NTUC Income you should know this tkl?! Oh wait, no you won’t! NTUC Income sucks! It sucked under you, and it STILL sucks! And logically, it will ALWAYS suck unless & until the pap is voted out so that new leadership can be brought in instead of the present lot of garbage!

So tkl, since you ALWAYS say China is much better than Singapore, WHY are you still living here?! Go on, migrate to China! It will be a win-win situation for all; you can experience communist rule firsthand, along with what will happen if you complain too much about the way things are done there, and we no longer have to put up with your insane moronic drivel.

    So tkl, are you listrning?

Singapore has never respected individuals’ privacy. Your personal data is for sale, that’s why they ask for it. Sometimes I get SMS from people asking me to bet or borrow money.

If you woek for civil service, they will tell you proudly that you are being watched. And I don’t mean the superiors just watching yoi at work. You movements both physicaal and online.

Now with surveillance cameras in public, it allows the gov to spy on people.

when we were hiring, the first gauge of competence was the england. in 100% of the cases, those careful with the grandma are those who rise up the ranks, whether with us or elsewhere.

  • Harder Truths:

When the government can take away your childhood, take away your job, you make sure you cannot have a house but can only rent from them, have full control of your finances and details of your life – is it not a bit obtuse to complain about this kind of thing?

Guess *OWNSELVES CHECK ownselves* means as good as no regulators?
Take Singapore Pools, many sgs buy Toto,4D etc.

The OPERATOR N REGULATOR ARE ONE AND THD SAME PAPple?
    How to regulate at all?

It has been reported there are a few hundred of million dollars *UNCLAIMED* WINNINGS?
I fail yo understand this when so many sgs are hard up,will they simply buy TOTO/4D and throw away their tics ?

Guess there is more to this.

  • Seriously?:

Mr Tan Kin Lian, surely you know that it takes two to clap.

We can only rely on Govt enforcement to a certain extent. Beyond which it requires cooperation and support of the general public.

If you had not given your details or consent to any party that calls you, it is incumbent on you to record the details of the person making the call to you (and organisation), and write a complaint to the PDPA Commission. And not sit behind a keyboard and say the law is bad.

    This is an unjustified comment.
