Share information on immigration with the public

Once Singaporeans feel that they are losing their jobs, standard of living, social benefits and sense of worth because of an influx of foreigners, immigration will become a political hot potato (Why immigration isn’t a numbers game, Oct 27).

It is natural for citizens to expect to get certain basic entitlements or benefits. But in a meritocracy, one has to work hard to get better benefits and rewards. Immigrants here can climb the social status ladder through hard work and enjoy the fruits of their contribution.

Competition between the local-born and foreign-born is unavoidable. If competition can bring out the best in us, our nation would be more competitive on the world stage.

Immigration policymakers should place national interest as the top priority and thoroughly weigh all the pros and cons.

Immigration policies are not just about numbers. The quality of immigrants, such as education level and skills, should be considered.

The authorities have information and data that they use to make policies. They should share the information with the public so that we can better understand the rationale of the policies. They should also present a breakdown of all foreigners here, including occupation, country of birth, age profile, average income and living conditions.

We should examine how well new citizens and permanent residents are integrating into our society, and enhance the social integration programme if needed.

Another very challenging issue concerns our national identity. Singapore has to boost its birth rate. National identity evolves slowly over time and we cannot stop the process. Country of birth, language, religion, and cultural and lifestyle traits all play a part in moulding our future national identity.

Politicians should not politicise the national identity issue to gain votes, for this would create serious social divides among our people. Once we have a sound immigration policy and a rigorous integration programme in place, we should leave it to future generations and new citizens to decide what kind of Singapore they want to build.

Competition between citizens for jobs is normal and fair.

But competition for jobs with virtually unlimited supply of foreign workers from countries with more than 1.3 billion people (such as India) is not normal and not fair.

Singaporeans are entitled to pro-citizens policies.

    India CECA is NOT ACCEPTABLE.

    @ Ng Albert

IMMIGRATION IS A HIJACKED POLITICAL AGENDA of PAPpypolitics – that is why it has become such a hot political potato.

SUCCESSIVE ECONOMIC RESTRUCTURING COMMITTEES through the decades have warned PAPpypolitics/PAPpynomics that reliance on foreign labor is BOTH POLITICALLY AND ECONOMICALLY UNSUSTAINABLE.

The reasons are obvious – economy is evolutionary. Population influx is revolutionary – the sychronisation is as easy as mixing oil with water.

Even Australia disbanded its temporary work skilled visa class 457 and replaced it with class 482 visa.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/457_visa

THAT IS YOU ALLOWs FOREIGN INFLUX ONLY IF THERE IS A NEED FOR SKILLED SPECIFIC SHORTAGES of temporary nature – THAT IS THE ECONOMY IS IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT of foreign influx, definitely NOT foreign influx the driver of the disintegrating economy of no competitive edge which may be sinking of no employment opportunity.

THAT IS WHY AUSTRALIA AND CANADA FOUND BIPARTISAN SUPPORT FOR MIGRATION INTAKE.

@Albert Ng: Need to know something?

    Foreigners are;
Cheapest – no need to pay CPF,
No Reservist obligation, no maternal leaves.
Collect fee for work passes, kickback for HR.
    Collect rental.

When convert to citizen, vote for the PAP.

Need data on foreign workers? Check out DBS, more than 80% foreigners, mainly Indians from the same village of the CEO’s!

In my previous office of 11 people; 3 Malaysians, 3 Pinoys and 1 Hongkonger. All in executive position.

    CECA kills Singaporeans!!

  • Numbers, numbers:

Gov and 70% talking in their dreams when they ask foreigners to integrate into Singapore.

With 10 million population, there will be 7.5 new or old foreigners and 2.5 real true blue Singaporeans. You want 7.5 million to integrate into 2.5 million? Stop dreaming. The minority everywhere is either absorbed into the majority or sidelined.

Sinkies are already the minority now. 2.5 million in a population of 6 million. Forget about 3.5 million citizens, because 1 million are new or not so new citizens. Even the famous Ramesh is part of the 3.5 citizens.

Wake up, Singaporeans, you are a minority in your own country.

    Do something. VTO.

POPULATION RECYCLING ECONOMICS of indiscriminate reliance on cheaper foreign labor influx arose because OTHER STRUCTURAL COMPETITIVENESS of our economy have been lost. It is not an economic strategy to grow the economy BECAUSE PAPpynomics have failed utterly and warned so repeatedly by successive Economic Strategies Committees findings and recommendation against it.

But PAPpypolitics are cunning enough to hijack that failed economic agenda to advantage by this route.

POPULATION INFLUX CANNOT SOLVE A DEAD ECONOMY WAITING FOR SUDDEN DEATH COLLAPSE.

THAT IS WHY PAPpynomic’s multi-decade Population Recycling Economics have failed utterly. Present Tense admitted it as much in 2015 – OUR ECONOMY HAVE MAXED OUT.

    I knew that long ago.

IMMIGRATION is PAPpypolitics “little sampans” tied to its SINKING ECONOMIC TITANIC – when the turbulence (PAPpypolitics very shy of this expletive on the public stage) rolls in, BOTH WILL SINK TOGETHER.

In the interim or interlude, imported unsuspecting foreigners serves the political harvest of vote to prolong PAPpypolitics political hegemony and longevity.

  • White Uniform Syndrome:

If we want more information and data, the only way is to vote for more oppositions into parliament. Then the oppo members can press the G for any kind of information we want. Otherwise, we can jolly well forget it. For their many stupid policies, sharing information and data with the public will only embarrass the pap.

Not sure why people keep writing questions on immigration. Will you have answer?

Today all the stats are suppressed, they are not real numbers. But one thing for sure our population to 6M and PAP is still importing!!!

The only way to tell them is through your vote!!!

All these articles and complaints mean nothing to PAP.

  • opposition dude:

Sorry Albert Ng but none of your suggestions are going to be adopted by PAP. As far as they are concerned they will just continue letting these third world people in by the plane load year after year. They will continue telling us they are looking after us, that they are tightening the inflow and so on.

But you know as well just like the rest of us that they will do the exact opposite of what they say. They will tell us that no Singaporean wants to do these jobs, that employers find it hard to hire locals and so on. This is the reason why the number of people on the island keeps increasing yearly and never ever decreases.

So as long as the kiasees remain kiasee PAP has nothing to fear. If they do actually manage to lose a significant number of their people after the next election they will make a few changes here and there before they go back to letting more third world people in.

So if Singaporeans want less competition for their jobs then we better bloody hell better bloody start voting in more opposition. Less of PAP in parliament will mean that they are forced to make changes that actually benefit Singaporeans.

If they still have 80+ seats in parliament after the next election you can expect even more competition for jobs for the next few years in addition to more transport fare hikes and a 9% GST.

I disagree with you on this.

Immigration is only a hot potato if the leaving citizen contributes to the country and is missed for it.

  • keep away from pap:

the only way for truth, and true news, in Singapore is to have New Government.

the current pap folks, from parleement to the over paid civil serpeants in pap organizations, all can be changed overnight as soon as New Government forms.

the best thing about New Government is it can indict pap clown and pap clown wife for their suspect role in gic temasick.

in the same league as culprit shall be the MOF folks, who supposed to oversight gic temasick but ended up in cahoots whether by omission or by commission.

Singapore is bigger, much bigger, than the few pap clan thieves approved by pliant pap parleement. as Dr Mahatir has shown, only New Government can clean up the thieving mess caused by a pliant pap parleement.
