Elections just months away, opposition needs to get serious

In the last 10 years, 5 new political parties were set up. For a small country like Singapore, and with even the main opposition parties struggling to win votes, the 5 new parties is a sign of fragmentation in the opposition.

Altogether, there are now 13 main opposition parties.

If one were to go and ask the man in the street, most would probably not know of most of the parties, let alone what each of the party stands for.

The state of the opposition has given rise to calls and attempts to form an alliance, to pool resources and establish a consistent, clear message for voters in the upcoming elections.

But even this has proved hard going.

After more than a year since the idea was first mooted, there is no sign that any such alliance will emerge. What voters can expect is probably the same horse trading once the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee (EBRC) releases the new electoral map.

Nothing more.

Talk of opposition unity has as well been debunked, in 2013 by the WP’s Low Thia Khiang in a rally speech in Punggol East, and more recently by the WP’s new secretary general Pritam Singh in a Facebook post.

Both men are spot on with the view that the WP must beat its own path as it has done since 1997, if it is to forge further ahead and win more than one GRC and one SMC (as it presently manages).

The other parties must be realistic, and wake up. Ironically, members and supporters of these parties often urge Singaporeans to do the same – to rise from their somnambulism.

But it is in fact these parties that must open their eyes, and ears, to what the people are saying. Even among themselves, there are members, such as Brad Bowyer, who have called on the parties to merge.

But that is unlikely.

And that is the sadness – as we head into election season in just a few months. (I’d say that the election will be called for between March and May 2020.)

Out of the 13 parties, one can disregard most of them, those which have been missing the last 4 years or more, or who have seriousness in wanting to be in Parliament; and focus on a handful – namely: WP, SDP & PSP.

All the others need to get serious, and realise that winning seats in Parliament is a deadly serious business, as you will represent the people of Singapore and uphold the Constitution.

It is not to win seats just to show off, or to boost one’s own personal profile or resume.

And to win seats and hold on to them, one needs a long term strategy, and not a fly-by-night game of tikam tikam.

The WP took 20 years to win a GRC, from the moment it decided to go its own way. And if you have been following the party’s progress, it didn’t come easy.

It is not by opportunistically “gatecrashing” a public event for cheap publicity. Winning hearts and minds take more, much more, than that.

Opposition supporters, in particular, need to be honest and tell the parties they support to buck up and get serious. Otherwise, after every 5 years we will be at exactly square one.

And then we will spend the next 5 years complaining again, that nothing has changed.

Have asked so many pap voters why they complained so much yet still voted for them. Reasons given were all the same. “I also want to vote opposition. But the one in my constituency is lousy!”

    What is lousy?

    “Anyhow talk during rally.”
    “Anyhow promise the impossible.”
    “Can’t even talk properly.”
“Look at those people inside the party.”

After the last GE, SingFirst, SDA, RP, NSP, PPP, DPP have been rather quiet. The few good ones from these parties should join SDP, PSP or PV if they’re serious about saving sg and singaporeans. Just let their respective parties fold up.

PAP supporters will laugh and say oppo members like to jump ship when some joined other parties. But what about the PAPies? Those who jumped ship and jumped into parliament through back doors? And become ministers overnight some more? Oman! It’s so dark!

If even Dr Tan can’t help to unite the oppositions before the coming GE, it’s highly unlikely it will happen in the future. So, Dr Tan, please jia you!

  • Went to Japan:

The article misses the big point: “The voters”!

Whatever the oppositions do if voters never pluck courage, it is a lost cause.

    GE 2015 shows that… 70% decided

Singaporean voters must decide if they love PAPPy policies or not. IT is not about opposition parties and how they are united or perform.

Voting against PAPPY is to tell them to go reflect and stop all those lousy policies.

Remember Ramesh is only one of the millions they imported. How many locals are jobless or unemployed because of 10M?

So irregardless it is voters’s choice who is key to election. Pluck your courage and vote all oppositions this coming GE to tell the white party you have enough of their bs.

  • Harder Truths:

Majority $G voters look at how well they are doing – if they are ok they will vote pappies. They do not care about anyone or anything else. Only their own wellness.

These voters think the opposition is there to get them some discounts at election, or if things get bad for them they can change their votes to opposition.

The end usually comes quickly – too quickly for anything to be done. Preparation is always long term – not last minute. When you have Stage 4 cancer there is no point looking for a cure. You need to accept the inevitable.

No one can help $G now. The cancer is already at Stage 4.

  • PAP's Own Doing:

Stupid dafts expect a token opposition to outvote a PAP majority.

If you have some brains and balls, it is already obvious that Voting for a change in government is a no Brainer, after all the issues that happened in past few decades.
What has the oppositions got to do with the mess? Nothing.

A United opposition, if not voted into the parliament, can do little.
So what is this call about a United opposition about?? Meaningless without support of real votes. When a new government is in, these politicians will aligned themselves.
Just do the first thing first, kick those greedy thieves out.

Don’t blame the politicians, or making excuses for yourselves, just blame yourselves for being stupid.

  • Tremendous:

I don’t think it’s necessary for various parties to merge. The alliance can be loose. There should be sufficient common grounds on loose alliance. This should include :
    (a) accountability. I don’t belong to any party but I am not less patriotic a citizen if I ask if cpf still has money to
pay its cpf contributors down to the last dollar IF the tap for contributions is turned off today. We have a string of huge sovereign fund losses that have mounted over the years and members of a certain party have been running away from hard working questions. I hope the members of the party don’t play games with citizens. Before elections announce that they will return cpf partially to citizens. Well, they can’t return in full because the money is just not enough. Then after elections, come up with all sorts of ways to claw back money. The payment for citizens renewed IC is a prime example of the failure of the government to grow the revenue pie outside Singapore.
    (b) fertility rate. HSK is not only the highest paid DPM in the world but he wants to be the highest paid PM! Stop running away from difficult issues like fertility rate and expect the current PM to front the issues. Show you are in charge and demonstrate results! The nation is going into an irrecoverable stage within next 5-6 years with this kind of TFR. If you solve the fertility rate issue, you would have solved 85-90% of the issues we face today.

Vote to keep the status quo, then kpkb again?

Don’t vent your frustrations on oppositions, they have little to do with the mess we are all facing. Direct your anger at the culprits.

To initiate the change and stop the decline, PAP must be voted out first.
If you are not willing to do that and nitpicking, then you shouldn’t kpkb.

Nothing will change. Mark my words. Maybe a few wins by TCB. You guys know why? Singaporeans WILL NEVER BE UNITED unlike Hong Kongers.

Singaporeans are also SELFISH and arrogant examples like Tan Kin Lian. Just know how to talk like a PAPPY all for self glorification and creating of a cult personality. Not only selfish but stupid as well.

So where got hope? Oppositions can’t even unite? Really no hope when a country’s people can’t unite and its’ young are so lazy. Short distances must use PMDS. Look at the HK protestors. No PMDS and yet they walked all over the island. Our youngs (about 70%) ARE really HOPELESS.

SO MARK MY WORDS. FORGET ABOUT BEING LIKE MALAYSIA OR HONG KONG.
I speaks the TRUTH. Singaporeans ARE SELFISH AND NEVER CAN BE UNITED!!!!!! SO don’t hope for CHANGE. It is sheer stupidity!!!!

It will be the same thing all over again and Singaporeans will still KPKB for another 5 years after this election. ANYONE WANNA BET?? Hahahaha…. HOW STUPID CAN ONE GETS??

So coming GE, vote against the PAP, it doesn’t matter who’s the opposition.

Vote against the PAP for your children and grandchildren. Remember PAP is sell the country via CECAs and FTAs. Do you want that??

I have reasons to suspect the GE will be December.

There is an upgrading at a hdb estate.
The next block can be started within a week but its residents are told date is unknown.

But will be in December. This means between now and that day in December, could be GE which only takes a day.

And notice more focus in fire hazards in HDB estates recently. Fire can burn the ballot. If they reason , they have more risk. Wink wink.

  • opposition dude:

I agree with Andrew Loh, there are far too many opposition parties with each party doing whatever they want and not being able to get voted in.

I do hope another opposition party gets voted into parliament as we do need more of them in parliament. The problem, as always, is that the minor parties do not have the manpower and resources to do much. They only are really active once the election is announced and simply expect to get voters to vote for them just because they are contesting. It simply does not work because voters don’t even know who they are. You can see from the percentage of votes just how much traction they have got with the voters of the ward they are contesting.

So if WP wants to go its own way let them. Should SDP and PSP be in an alliance then it’s a good thing for me too. Let us see how they bigger opposition parties perform in the next GE, I’m curious as to how well PSP will fare.

Pls allow me to share an experience. I bought a few T-shirts from a vendor outside a HDB store-front. When I went back to do an exchange for size, I was told by the shop owner or assistant that the vendor had nothing to do with them. It was one of those “here today, gone the next” kind of vendor. No so with the SDP and WP. Although Dr. TCB is an experienced veteran in politics, he will need the co-operation and support of other opposition leaders to pose a serious challenge to the PAP. Otherwise, he will not be able to bring about the change that all of us so want for the country.

    AGREE with Andrew Loh
That we must not condone Opposition for simply supporting them unquestioningly.

Eg. WP is known to be lacking Action. Not just for a day but for at least a decade. In fact throughout the entire career of LTK.

WP supporters will continue to vote for them. But we should not be like papaya fans who turn a blind eye and never criticise the papaya.
