Opposition parties should focus on HDB and CPF issues, PAP can be crippled

Opposition parties should pool their resources and turn 2 issues – HDB and CPF/(reserves) into our national conversation. No let-up till election time.

Get HDB lessees to ask themselves why are they labelled owners when all ownership rights remain with HDB. Why are we ‘owners’ when the legal instrument signed is a Lease Agreement – with HDB as lessor?

If Singaporeans own our HDB flats, then surely we should be the ones to decide which developer to sell our flats to in an en bloc deal.

Do Singaporeans not want to be rich? Then why are we forced to sell to HDB at its predetermined price instead of the highest bidder?

Since more than 80% of Singaporeans live in HDB flats, won’t PAP tremble with even a fraction of ‘owners’ enlightened?

Annually, billion$ leave our reserves – into the pockets of PAP cronies and relatives.

Ho Ching has clearly received hundreds of millions in salary and bonuses since joining Temasek in 2002. Why can’t her salary be disclosed?

Why should the indecent remuneration of every PAP crony/relative be concealed?

Ho Ching could not possibly be earning less than DBS CEO’s almost-$1 million a month or $32,000 a day salary.

At an estimated $100 million annual remuneration, Ho could be earning $300,000 a day.

So, why do PAP ministers need to KPKB in parliament about increasing peanuts to assist vulnerable groups of citizens when their spouses and relatives are paid obscenely?

Why is poverty evident in every corner of Singapore when the spouse of PM Lee earns $300,000 a day?

On the CPF issue, convince Singaporeans of the daylight robbery, ie CPF converted to state reserves in order for PAP to cream off part of CPF investment returns. No country has legislated employee retirement savings as loans to the government.

Only the HDB and CPF/(reserves) issues can unite sufficient number of Singaporeans to turn the tide against the abusive PAP.

Embarrassing data should be presented in such a way as to interest ordinary folks. Set them thinking aloud in coffee shops and social media abuzz.

Other issues such as CECA are important. But can they can be addressed in a meaningful way without first crippling PAP?

When more Singaporeans dare to ask the right questions on HDB and CPF/(reserves), PAP will be on the defensive and half the battle is won.

Yes and also joblessness and healthcare costs.

Healthcare costs have risen at a much faster rate than even housing over the last 15/29 years.

It will keep rising so as to allow the govt to $uck your CPF LEEgally?

We move towards 10M, how many locals will be replaced by FTs or sitting at home when they have sky cost of living and BTO loans to pay?

Else they will see a bully bullying a weak person in broad daylight and say, while I do not support bullying, I do not want to be involved . Let the bully do what he likes.

Well educated fools studied accounting and business or finance but did not have the IQ to question when someone says flat value never drops and lessee is not owner.

IF THE BUYERS OF HDB OWN THEIR FLATS, how come they still need to lease from HDB?

These buyers paid exorbitant amount of money for the lan.d, yet their transfer deed show they are mere tenants on the land where their HDB blocks sit.

Neither can be mortgaged to the bank for loans.

If CPF is ever our money, how come that become a perpetual trustee arrangement until mortality without our consents? In common law history dating more than 700 years, there is no such a thing as perpetual trustee – that would be no different from theft of another person taking your car without your consent and depriving you of its use (and when arrested by law enforcement) then hypocritically promises to return after your death to your children or grandchildren even if you have no kids.

BOTH HDB AND CPF SCHEMES ARE NOT WHAT IT PROMISES TO BE WHEN PEASANTS SIGN UP.

    well said, bro.

    agree 100%.

1st, emphasize on the pap lie – HDB is asset that can be enhanced. even though pap no longer uses this lie, it is good to remind 70% sheep paying S$400k for a public rental unit is gross over paying for the rental unit.

2nd, CPF money is citizen’s own money. FULL sum must be allowed to be withdrawn at 55. if pap really cares for citizens, then, wages of officers in gic temasick must be reined in so that the balance, including gic temasick profits if any, can be given to citizens at S$300 pm per citizen above 55.

if pap does not want to do it, let others who want to do it form government.

People should not be passive and let opposition parties provide the leg work and intellectual oomph.

Those citizens who and see through the PAP façade and propaganda has a responsibility to explain it to their own friends, neighbours and acquaintances. This can be done at any time–not just before elections. Your children may just ask you what did you do when PAP keeps increasing your CPF minimum sum to avoid paying out. Your fear and inertia will lumber them with a heavy burden when they grow up.

As for solutions, to the problems and issues, there is now a bunch of credible opposition parties citizens can choose to find the best fit for their issues.

Bear in mind that it is not just CPF and HDB that are problems caused by PAP that impacts on ordinary citizens. There is a whole gamut of governance issues that need to be resolved along with specific issues.

The time for accounting for the PAP is near–citizens should do their part.

Spot on, Philip! Singaporeans of course want to be rich. New citizens included.

Remember majority singaporeans voted for pap bcoz of HDB upgrading? pap says flats after being upgraded can fetch higher price, will never drop. That’s what helped pull votes for the white party.

Now HDB owners know their flats will become zero after 99 yrs, upgraded or not.
Now they know they’ve thrown more good money into their flats on some useless HDB upgrading.
Now they know they cannot suka suka sell to developers in en bloc deal unlike 99 yrs condo owners.

Last time uncles and aunties ‘bo tak chek’ don’t know simi is lessees, simi is owners. Can’t believe, HDB is still using these terms. Also can’t believe, educated singaporeans still accept the koyok they’re selling now.

About CPF. Just the other day, 1 friend cursed another friend for voting the pap. He says pap voters ‘hai si lang’. Next year CPF min sum will be $181k liao! By his time maybe $200k? How to hit that amount? Already so much money has been used on his flat! Some more he bought his flat at half the price of what his son is paying for now. Then his son how? Our future generations how?

    Oppositions! You gotta save sg!

  • HDB flats depreciate to ZERO:

HDB should definitely be a major issue for the coming GE for the following reasons:

    (1) HDB prices MORE THAN DOUBLED since LHL became PM while wages were stagnant. WHY?

    (2) HDB will indeed be worth ZERO at the end of the 99-year lease despite HIP1 and HIP2. This is a FACT. Any asset has value as long as it is useful. At the end of the lease, it has can no longer be used and has to be returned to HDB with no compensation. Therefore, it is useless for the owner and worth ZERO. PAP should confirm this FACT as stated earlier by Lawrence Wong.

    (3) HDB flats are DEPRECIATING assets because of the 99-year lease. HDB’s Lease Buyback Lease (LBS) confirms this. The length of the returned lease determines what it pays for it.

    (4) If HDB flats are basically DEPRECIATING assets why are CPF (retirement) money (which needs to grow) were used to pay for them?

    (5) HDB flats are OVER-PRICED. After paying for them the owner’s CPF account is DEPLETED (below the CPF Minimum Sum. PAP needs to prove its claim that HDB flats are “affordable and subsidized”.

HDB legal papers clearly show you are the leasee of the HDB unit. You lease it – you do not own it.

The unfilial son owns it, plus you give you life savings to his wife to pay for living in it. When it becomes worthless you get a note telling you to vacate. The FT will sell quickly and move back to their mansions in their native countries.

Hi Philip, I think CECA is equally important because it gives away our hard earned futures to foreigners and benefits only the PAP.

Think of it this way. There’s a donkey hitched to a heavily loaded wagon. A man atop the wagon holds out a stick with a carrot hanging from the end. Using the stick, he dangles the carrot in front of the donkey. The donkey steps forward to eat the carrot but it can never reach the carrot. It’s all a ruse, a cruel trick the man plays on the donkey.

The donkey represents clueless Singaporeans. The man is their PAP master. The carrot is your CPF and your retirement dreams which you can never fully realise. The loaded wagon is the economy which Singaporeans strive to drive forward. But for all their honest and hard work, Singaporeans can never taste the fruits of their labour. That reward belongs to the foreigners who rob us with the aid of the PAP.

  • TL Tan:

Both issues are wishful thinking on the writer’s part.

On public housing, most Singaporeans see HDB flats as a roof over their heads. They don’t use it for speculation or investment. They know the 99-year lease depreciates every year. They know they can’t live till 99 years old anyway, so the HDB flat would have fulfilled its objective of providing a lifetime roof over their heads. Any remaining years of the lease after their deaths will just be passed on to the next generation, who will decide what to do accordingly.

On CPF, it is not a loan to the government. We are faced with an ageing population and higher healthcare costs. Singaporeans recognize that a higher amount of Minimum Sum is needed to be set aside to cover these costs. We are merely adopting an international convention, which is governments setting aside a certain amount of employees salaries to cover their pensions when they retire. It is perfectly legitimate.

Therefore, both issues are non-starters with Singaporean voters, who are already aware of these issues and understand the position of our government, and we value our peace and stability above all else.

If all the opposition parties can focus on these 2 key issues unitedly as suggested by Phillip Ang which the majority voters have held dearly in their hearts and address their concerns well to win their votes it will deal a one-two knockout punch on PAP this coming GE.

Agree there are many other issues but these 2 will unite Singaporeans against PAP most.
During the past few years, many Singaporeans have already realised PAP top guns LKY and his son, Lau Goh, etc lied about HDB prices going up forever. It’s not wrong to call PM Lee a liar in public.
If Lim Tean is willing to cooperate with a few oppos, go to Hong Lim Park and explain with a copy of HDB Agreement for Lease in hand – as a lawyer – this could convince tens of thousands more that PAP has also been lying about ownership status of HDB lessees.
Majority of HDB lessees have chosen to delude themselves as admittance would mean they were openly fooled by PAP.
Also, telling HDB lessees that they could become rich if given full ownership rights,ie ability to sell to private developers in en bloc deal, will appeal to the greed of many. That’s how PAP won over voters – strike fear in them or appeal to their greed. There’s a high chance this may work depending on execution.

Many other issues besides CECA are also important but I don’t see them uniting sufficient numbers to oppo camp.
PAP is aware that an increasing number of HDB lessees now realise they are not owners. But the current number of enlightened lessees remains small.
After I highlighted this issue on my blog, HDB took the trouble to amend terms like subtenant, etc on its website.
