MINDEF clarifies why SAF officers are flying business class to exercises

MINDEF has issued a clarification to a media enquiry on why SAF officers are flying business class to exercises, which was noted by an ST reader, Seah Lim.

The agency’s reply is reproduced verbatim below:

1. We refer to Mr Sean Lim Wei Xin’s letter, ‘Why do SAF officers fly business class to exercises?’, published on 26 Nov 2019.

2. To cater for the large numbers of soldiers travelling overseas for exercises, competitive tenders for chartered flights provide the most cost efficient form of mass travel as they cost less than purchasing individual economy seats on commercial flights. Business class seats are not specified as a requirement in these tenders but some planes provided do include business class seats, at no added cost to the SAF. These were the business class seats referred to in Mr Lim’s letter.

3. We thank Mr Lim for this opportunity to clarify.

Mr Lim had questioned the reasons for this arrangement, and was curious to know the justification.

  • When Sporeans think, pap sinks:

Is this part of the reasons why so much budget has to be given to the defence ministry for the past decades? To pamper the paper generals and to feed a big whole bunch of regular jiak liao bees in our army?

I’m hoping for the day to come when transparency will give the public a clear sheet of how the big sum of taxpayers’ monies are being spent.

  • Harder Truths:

In other countries they have what is known as an AIR FORCE to take their soldiers anywhere.

    Too bad $G doesn’t have one – I mean a real one.

They’re making some of our NSF sons (esp those medically unfit) in camps to wash cups or ta pau meals, like servants, for highly-paid SAF regular officers.

We raise our sons for 20 years not to go to NS to serve as slaves for these pampered SAF regular officers, or to be verbally vulgarly abused by them everyday. They go NS to serve the country.

  • Why not a lottery system?:

Ok, let’s take it the business seats come with no added cost.

Then the question is why can’t these seats be allocated on a lottery system so that some recruits/privates/cpls can also be pampered for their service to our country?

Why must goodies be reserved for the highest ranks?
Are the best meals also reserved for the highest ranks?
    The entire system stinks.

As with most PAP Government “responses” to questions from citizens it did not answer the questions posed. This is a gloss over as opposed to addressing the issue raised.

If my memory serves me right, the question was are Offices flying business class instead of economy class in a normal commercial flight.

The response, if you can call it that, deals with chartered flights. If it is a chartered flight paid for by the army, the issue of Business Class or Economy Class really does not apply. The army decides as they paid for the whole flight and the planes they use.

The Business or Economy Class issue only arises in normal commercial flights used by the army. So the question raised have not been answered.

As to the use of chartered flight, it is the opportunity to provide businesses for a GLC. Isn’t that clever.

Parties, should collate such non-answer response and publish it in their newsletters to educate people about this charade of the PAP and their organs of Government

  • pap SAF Lj is lying:

it makes no sense this reply from pap Army Lj.

    charter plane?

how come civilian on board to discover abuse of taxpayer money in business class?

when is pap Lj ng eng hen? too busy to smoothen his BS speech to really pay attention to the work paying him S$m for doing ffff off?

we declare we suspect the pap SAF Lj is lying.

if pap SAF is truly honest, the business class goes to the worst person in the whole plane, and it cannot be anyone other than that private on cheapest allowance allowed for his free labour.

pap master liar lky clown is army. the one under him pinnochio teo is navy. the others under them are mostly army. heart of hearts, they take care of their own welfare first than honouring the officer Honour Code by letting the men eat firts, by letting the men have business class first, provided it is true the business class in on charter plane provided foc.

we doubt the foc part. we declare as citizens of Singapore, we think the pap SAF Lj is lying in the reply.

    pap SAF Lj is dishonest.

So if something is offered for free to a Ministry or Ministry official without even asking, its okie? To avoid speculation best to stick to “cattle” class for all ranks? Wouldnt that be common sense prudence? Amazing how justification can be made when it suits the authorities!

You got a point there but the whole purpose of having C130 is for mass transport, dio bo?

Isn’t this the best time to test run it since it won’t be used in times of war, i.e. no chance of taking off during war. lol

In times of war the C130 will be use as a decoy to mislead the enemy jet-fighters. Then ‘these officers’ will wave to the enemy from the chartered plane. While confused our F16s zero in. You say smart or not?
