New rendition of National Anthem to be broadcast on Tuesday (3 Dec)

On Sunday (1 Dec), Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Grace Fu announced  that the National Anthem Majulah Singapura will be updated as part of celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of Singapore’s national symbols.

No other details were disclosed except that the new version will be a rendition by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. It will be broadcast across all Mediacorp, Singapore Press Holdings and Safra radio stations at 11.20am tomorrow (3 Dec), 60 years after the national symbols were first unveiled.

Minister Fu was quoted as saying that: “I think 60 years on, Singaporeans are wearing the flag proudly. They are singing the anthem proudly.”

Majulah Singapura was first composed by the late Zubir Said in 1958 as an official song for the city council at the time. It was based on the council’s motto, “Majulah Singapura”, which was translated as “May Singapore flourish” at the time. After Singapore attained self-governance in 1959, it was adapted and introduced as Singapore’s national anthem on Dec 3.

The current version was recorded in 2001.

Opposition politician: Why weren’t Singaporeans consulted prior to change?

Responding to this change, Peoples Voice Party Secretary-General Lim Tean questioned why Singaporeans were not consulted prior to this announcement.

The Cambridge-educated lawyer said: “A National anthem is the embodiment of a Nation and a People’s Identity and history and is never changed unless a major political has taken place, such as what happened in South Africa when apartheid ended”.

He added: “You don’t find the Chinese changing their National Anthem or the British changing God Save the Queen or the French changing the Marseilles! How do they know that Singaporeans will like their new version?”

“This latest incident shows how aloof and detached the PAP have become and how a huge parliamentary majority has gotten to their heads, much like how they implemented the Reserve Presidency Scheme for selfish political ends”.

What do you think?

guess guess for fun lar ? maybe more chat-ba-lang & incorporating various languages (more cosmopolitan chat-ba-lang true to the name of sinkie land ?) ?

old daft sinkies are past their due date (utility value already “fully extracted”) ? now it is time for a new cycle of 151th standard of indoctrination under a newer PORMAR internet age for many new sinkies converts and newer generations of youths and people ?

I would suggest change our pledge instead.

Remove the word; – equality, democracy, race, justice from the pledge so that PAP can honour it easier.

The citizen like to honour the pledge but PAP is unable to do it, so for the benefit of the PAP, change it!

  • Majulah Singapura:

The “Majulah Singapura” is symbolic of the country’s history and independence. The lyrics express the new spirit and aspiration of a people in their newly found independence. It is a call to progress, happiness, success and unity which are as relevant today as it was 55 years ago. To replace the country’s national anthem is to erase a significant piece in the history of our independence. The lyrics in Malay may not be understood and appreciated by non-Malay speakers, but they are simple and beautiful. This part of the Malay heritage in the nation’s multi-cultural history will be lost.

  • Mati-lah Kita:

A nation does not change its national anthem unless it is conquered by another power. You can add other patriotic songs to the repertoire of “national songs” but the country’s national anthem should be preserved in its original composition. The “soulful” version may be suited for a solo stage performance but how suitable is it to be sung by young children in a school assembly? The music may be soulful and soothing but it also sounds slow and sad; like the nation just died, man! The “bahagia” (happy) does not sound like it. It lacks the spirit and energy in the original anthem that befits the call to a nation to unite. An “anthem” is supposed to be a “rousing and uplifting song” according to one dictionary definition.

    2. CECA makes many jobless and become contract staff. Frequent unemployment.

    3. Cost of living in world most expensive city without freedom. What a way to waste money and die.

    4. HDB depreciation. Felt cheated by broken promises.

    5. Cpf retirement sum keep rising. Broken promise of returning all our CPF at 55.
    Unilaterally altered cpf rules. Dictatorship?
