Straits Times draws flak for grading Team Singapore athletes

A ‘Team Singapore Report Card’ published by Straits Times on how athletes have performed on the South-East Asia games has drawn considerable flak. First published on Thurs (12 Dec), the feature article ‘graded’ various sports on a scale from “A+” to “F”.

For example, fencing was given an “A+” as it was deemed to be “Singapore’s best showing” while football was given an “F” grade for being a “real let-down on and off the pitch” and the Young Lions “failed to score in four games”.

Netizen Sharmine Chan, who took to Facebook to express her view, commented that “some of these athletes have had to train for a competition of this level with little to no support from organisations, or that they’ve had to take time off work and dig into their savings to fund their own trainings to prove their worth”.

Back in 2017, the funding for sportsmen to take part in regional sporting events drew irk from the public due to limited government support. It was reported in Channel NewsAsia that some athletes resorted to crowdfunding and taking bank loans to pursue their sporting dreams.

On Chen’s Facebook post, one commentator noted: “Joseph Schooling’s parents had to put their assets on their line for their child to be a success and fight for him not do NS so as to not disrupt his career. When he started wining gold, only then the PAPies started taking credit. So frustrating!”

Another commentator expressed anger: “This is beyond bullshit! They should be ashamed of themselves as this is such a shallow and superficial assessment of sport, competition and competitors. Such poor journalism!”

SPP’s Jose Raymond said in his Facebook post: “They sacrifice, they toil, at the expense of their jobs, their families, their lives. They need an eco-system which helps them develop. They need a family of supporters around them. We are their family. The Singaporean family”.

What do you think?

Don’t hide the amount of tax payers money spent on the SEA “GAMES…..” when poor kid had to be humiliated for not being able to pay $156 for school fees.

So how much did we spend on the SEA “GAMES” in total despite the self-sponsored individuals?

By producing a sport report card, the local paper is telling the white $$$million elites that it is time again to hire or import FTs (foreign trash)for sports with D or F grades in SEA games. They are ppl with hearts at the wrong side of their body, by highlighting sport men/women’s failures. Participating in sports is not about “must winning all the times. Win or lose does not matter. It is a spirit of sports when our sport men/women gather with their counter parts from other ASEAN countries, to compete, cement friendship and understanding of each other countries. So, please do not discourage or shame our losers.

The Straits Times is happy that you still read their news. Tomorrow they will publish another controversy so that you will read them again. In the mean time, while you are reading that. Read some surreptitiously inserted propaganda too, please.

  • understand this, and VTO:

can easily spend $28mil on Dotard and FatBoy meeting at Sentosa.
cant even pay for schoolgirl’s school fees or properly fund b manage our sg born athletes.
they rather buy athletes than invest in our own.
another big reason to vote them out.

the whole SEA games contingent should have boycott and protest the games. go on strike and refused to compete in all the remaining events. let the nation go right down to the bottom of the medal score board.

teach these bloody motherfcckers a lesson!!!

  • think b4 speaking:

who wrote up that report card on the sg athletes should be shot.
these SG athletes arent paid millions or hundreds of thousands like the imported ones.
yet they slogged their guts out and many even brought g
    home medals.
if the person who graded them can do better than can talk…ir else zip your lips up.
    so ungrateful.

  • Harder Truths:

Don’t be fooled into distraction by an unimportant sporting event.

Will you give a sh*t if you are unemployed or unable to pay your child’s school fees? Or need help to pay medical bills when your loved one is hit by a PMD? Or maybe you need to get out of the flat you ‘own’ because you can’t keep up the monthly payments?

These things are red herrings. Pay no attention.

SEA Games – Only 3 bronze medals. Asia Masters 16 golds, 12 silvers and 14 bronzes

Read this article in http://www.mysingaporenews.blogspot.sg on how the masters athletes collected all the medals without a single cent of support, paid for everything themselves.

  • Misplaced Priority:

It’s better to lose honorably than to win dishonorably. You have put in all the hard work and personal sacrifice to represent the country and that’s what you get – a put down. If they can spend hundreds of millions in giving away scholarships to foreign students, they certainly can do more for our Singapore athletes who train to represent the country.
