General Elections will be held between 14 to 22 March?

In an opinion piece on Monday (30 Dec), Indian newspaper New Delhi Times has predicted that the next Singapore elections “may take place between 14 March to 22 March 2020” for three reasons.

First, the paper noted that various opposition politicians had made social media postings about a briefing conducted by the Elections Department, the Times said that this was an “indication that the logistical process for conducting the elections is underway”.

The 13 Dec briefing was meant to showcase various new technologies implemented for the upcoming polls, such as a self-inking pen and new counting equipment for faster tallying of results.

In addition, the Times also noted that the typical period “between the announcement of the formation of the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee (EBRC) and Polling Day has ranged between two and six months” and it has been 5 months since the EBRC was conveyed on the 1 Aug.

Finally, the elections “sync with the post-budget phase, so as to cash in on the new policies introduced in the budget”. Noting that the Budget will be presented in Feb 2020, the paper predicted the possibility that elections may take place between 14 March to 22 March 2020 which it describes as “a period during which schools are closed”.

The paper also predicted that the PAP “is almost certain to return to power, with opposition parties largely underfunded and divided”.

Do you agree with their assessment?

Liz one 101% confirmed but would very much like to see the oppies prove me terribly wrong.

Reason I say so is, IMHO, most of the oppies are in it for the money (15k doing practically nothing), not the urge to serve. These parties therefore are the stumbling blocks to the other oppies who are in it to serve and hopefully effect changes for the betterment of fellow citizens.

The irony is that some these kind of oppies’ supporters are too blind to distinguish between a fly-by-night oppy party and the genuine ones, therefore causing a lost of crucial votes for genuine oppy parties.

There is also, IMHO, the stuck-up WP who thinks they are the big brother and I am tempted to predict that they will be the party that would mostly be causing 3 cornered fights come GE.

Again, I would very much like to see the oppies prove me terribly wrong.

That week in March is indeed the school holidays so it would be a perfect time to call an election. Some schools would definitely be used as voting centres and with few people in school during the holidays it would be prefect.

PAP can’t go on forever about not wanting to call an election because the longer they delay the more things get worse. Let’s hope we get more opposition voted in because PAP definitely needs another wakeup call since they have forgotten what happened in 2011 already.

Yeah india has a vested interest when and how our sg GE takes place.
It affects their ceca brothers and sister countrymen working in our little red dot country.. it’s all about politics and money.
And of course india would love the PAP to win 100% ..
Lets prove these India pro CECA politicians n supporters wrong by supporting n voting in as many of our alternative parties as possible.
We have nothing to lose except them india ceca lovers.
I’d appreciate if they do not interfere in our country’s politics in advance.

The paper also predicted that the PAP “is almost certain to return to power, …. “. That’s because of the number of new-citizens and nothing else.

2018 UN’s population estimated 46% of Singaporeans are of new citizen (POFMA Office can check). Not all of the 54% true blue Singaporeans are eligible to vote, so you see it could be only 40% SG are voting.

So how could PAP be voted out? PAP is not worry at all.

After the coming GE, true blue Singaporeans will be minority. There will be a new generation of Singaporeans, made up of Malaysians, Pinoys, PRCs, Myanmars, CECA Indians and our languages and cultures will also be changed.

God bless the next generations of true blue Singaporeans.

    I no eye to see.

Now going forward, a stamp of the X will be used. Does it remove any trace of uniqueness?

Oh, don’t get me wrong. I am not alluding that there is possibility of abuse of stamping

India got interested in sg GE coz of CECA? Fear of pap losing power and CECA would be revoked? And then sg can’t provide jobs for their indian nat’ls any more? Mentioned Heng SK will take over as pm some more, the one who signed the CECA!

It’s so obvious they are following our election and hoping that pap stays in power so sg can continue to feed their people. Machiam a mistress fearing that her man would lose power, no more money to feed her children, whahaha…. but sorry hor. You people can hope and expect whatever you like but the real POWER is in singaporeans’ hands! Smart singaporeans will vote for a loyal G that takes care of its own people first, only the stupid ones would still choose to support the traitors.

Nothing to do with oppositions or unity, it is the mental state of voters. They are fearful of change and PAP. They rather complain behind keyboard and hopeful for change. And they will find excuse not to vote oppositions.

Singaporeans are suffering, more and more local PMETs are being replaced earlier. If this goes on, locals will end up reporting to FTs or unemployed or driving PHVs.

Singaporeans have to courage to fight for next gen future.

I would just caution that the approach of PSP to organise 2 public lectures is not going to give you the results you hope for…….Tan Jee Say also organised public lecture……….he was wiped out at the GE 2015.

Your CEC members have yet to show their mettle……..I am not sure how much better or worse than Lim Tean………..time is short & I suggest we meet up before it is too late.

Public lecture is only able to reach those minority of politically interested intellectuals and not the general intellectuals who are absolutely apathetic and also unable to reach the majority who are not very smart to begin with.

Yes, agree that public lectures yield little dividends. But it’s still needed!

Voters are more interested as to whether the person who is voted to be MP can discharge his duties as MPs……..which inter alia, how he/she could cause the Govt to make policies not detrimental to the national interests. The MP to be MUST demonstrate that he/she understands how the economy functions, what are the ROOT CAUSE of Singapore’s economic, social and political problems.

I don’t see ANY of the PSP’s CEC member has shown himself/herself to be so qualified.

Municipal issues can be overseen by appointing managing agents.

If you are a member of the PSP’s CEC, then it only points to the fact that you just don’t quite understand Singapore’s problems and implications for the future, which I have believed all along.

  • sure thing:

    @Realistically

Your approach (ie explaining the root cause of the problems and joining the dots) will only work with highly-educated fence-sitters. Most voters don’t think so much when they vote. They just ask themselves a simple question: Overall, has the govt been good or bad for me? Yes, cost of living is increasing but we still have good quality public housing and we can still pass our HDB to our children. Education & healthcare is such a high standard, our train system so good. So good enough, we just vote PAP for our stability.

Explaining to them how HDB is overpriced considering the construction costs and land payments to SLA/URA just don’t cut it. They are not interested/don’t have the ability to listen to long arguments. All election slogans must be kept simple, just look at Trump (make america great again) and Boris Johnson (get brexit done).

Does the govt of the day represent who you are and the kind of life you want to live? Unfortunately, the vast majority of Singaporeans still answer yes to this question.

The problem with people like you is that you don’t want to face up to the reality of why the so-called oppos have failed to achieve being elected one GE after another. Even as the PAPies have declared that they do NOT have a monopoly of ideas, but I don’t think the ooppos think similarly when they just ignore what I have commented with reason, logic and facts.

Even TRE techie has said that he believes most of these so called oppos are in it for the money…..easy $16k MP allowance.

Just ask yourself: if people VTO the PAPies, who is capacble of replacing them?

What is the fundamental facing Singapore for which the PAPies have FAILED?

As I hv said b4, unless those contesting can show that they can value-add to peoples’ lives, it is unlikely that there would be more oppos in Parliament.
